Beavers lose first playoff game in overtime

The Clarence Beavers took their first hit in the playoffs against the GatineauMustangs. They lost 4-3 in overtime in the first game which was held last Friday. “There’s no getting around it, discipline will be the key factor,” said General Manager Charlie Lavictoire. “The team who’s able to stay out of the penalty box will have the upper hand.” Both teams got the message from the referees who gave no less than 16 minor penalties in total in the game. Neither team took advantage of it however as no goals were scored on the powerplay. The Mustangs seemed determined to

end it quickly taking 2-0 lead in the first period. The Beavers awoke in the second period as Karl Lari- vière scored two goals to tie the game 2-2. In fact, the Beavers only had two shots in total in the second period while the Mustangs didn’t even get one on Clarence goalie, Philippe Quesnel. In the last period, Cole Downer scored a third goal for Clarence from Pier-Olivier Fournier and Jean-François Lupien. The Date February 20 February 22 *February 27 *March 1 *March 3

Beavers then had to defend themselves shorthanded for several precious minutes. Then, with less than nineminutes to go, the Mustangs finally caught up to Clarence with a tying goal tomake it 3-3. The score remai- ned the same till the end of the regular time. In overtime, the referees kept their whistles to themselves as no penalties were given. The two teams struggled to score the game-winning goal. Clarence took 14 shots and Gatineau sent 16 shots. The sixteenth shot got past Philippe Quesnel, marking the victory for Gatineau. The Beavers were facing the Mustangs for a second game this Wednesday at the Clarence Creek arena. The third game will take place in Gatineau, Friday February 20.
