Awarmand welcome start for Carnival in Clarence Creek with the Friday evening opening ceremony taking place around a big roaring bonfire outside the Clarence Creek Arena.
Subzero cold at the start of the Valentine’s Day weekend drove many people indoors in Eastern Ontario. In Clarence Creek though organizers for the annual Carnival adapted their plans and came upwithways for residents and visitors to the village to still enjoy a mid-winter celebration while staying warm. The Knights of Columbus, the traditio- nal sponsors of Carnival in Clarence Creek, chose to forego the usual night-time parade through the centre of the village and up to the arena for the Friday evening opening
ceremony on Feb. 13. Instead, they took in hand the bad luck weather courtesy of an extreme cold front and turned it into a good luck party around a roaring warm bonfire outside of the arena where people enjoyed cups of hot chocolate while viewing the fireworks spectacular exploding overhead. Several snowmobilers also went on their regular evening rally after the opening cere- monies were done. Those still gathered at the arena went inside to watch the first games of the community hockey tournament which finished up on Sunday.
when possible to archery contests with foam arrows and Robin Hood-style quar- terstaff bouts with big cushioned staves. Carnival fun continues all this week and into the weekend with the annual Ice Car Race as the climax on Sunday, February 22. The Clarence Creek Knights of Columbus proved they can adapt to any situation where it concerns Carnival as theymoved Sunday’s children’s games activities out of the subzero cold and upstairs to the arena mezzanine.
The Knights of Columbus continued to show their adaptability as they moved the weekend’s children’s games indoors at the arena rather than continue with the usual outdoor activities. While the adults enjoyed their own little social, kids chal- lenged each other and also their parents Fireworks lit up the night sky over Clarence Creek as part of Carnival’s opening ceremony.
Mayor Guy Desjardins and other city officials and representatives for Carnival supporters presented a $3000 cheque towards the cost of this year’s Clarence Creek Carnival celebrations.
