Flexo Market Predicted To Hit $181 Billion In 2025 The global value of flexographic printing will rise from $167.7 billion in 2020 to $181.1 billion in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.6 percent at constant prices, according to a new report from Smith- ers.According to the report, the majority of extra demand will come from the dynamic packaging print sector, where new automation and hybrid press lines are giving flexo print service providers greater flexibility and the option to exploit higher-value print applications. The global Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 will have an impact on growth due to disruptions in the supply chain and consumer purchasing. A Stabilizing Economy As the global economy stabilizes, the greatest in- crease in demand for flexo print will come from Asia and Eastern Europe, the research found. New flexo press sales are projected to increase at 0.4 percent, to a value of $1.62 billion and a total volume of 1,362 units in 2025; in addition to thriving second-hand, re- furbishment, and press enhancement markets. Corrugated board will remain the largest value seg- ment, but the quickest growing applications are in labels and folding carton print. For corrugated sub- strates, there will be an increase in lower run rates and shelf-ready packaging work. Much of this will be high color work, with three or more colors. Additionally, there will be an increase in wide-web installations driven by the continued growth in corru- gated and carton production. The survey also found that flexo will remain the most cost-effective print process for mid- to long-runs, but continued developments in digital (inkjet and elec- trophotography) printing will increase market pres- sures on flexo, to address changing consumer demand. To respond to this — especially for more short run work — there will be a drive to increase automation of flexographic processes, incremental improvements in computer to plate (CtP) processing, better on-press colour checking and imaging, and use of digital work- flow tools, according to the report. In addition to that, flexo manufacturers will continue to introduce hybrid presses, the report identified.Typ- ically, the result of a collaboration with a digital print technology company allows the benefits of digital pro- cesses, such as variable data printing, to be combined with the speed of flexo on a single platform. The study also found that enhancement in flexo plate and sleeve technology will improve image reproduc- tion, and minimise press room time taken on cleaning and make-ready.

GreenSeed Reports Surge On Contract Packaging GreenSeed, an external manufacturer and contract packaging operations that manages the manufacturing and packaging for dry foods and supplements in the natural products category, has seen an influx of proj- ects from large CPGs. Growing Market According to market research byTechnavio, the glob- al consumer goods contract packaging market is ex- pected to grow at a CompoundAnnual Growth Rate of close to 8 percent during the period of 2018-2022.This new study attributes this increase to the rapid growth of the global consumer goods manufacturing mar- ket in both developed and developing countries. The study maintains that CPGs who work with co-packers usually outsource their secondary packaging activities to a pure-play contract packaging company. Several lo- gistics players have incorporated contract packaging into their product portfolios to avoid such a process in the supply chain—a move that is expected to reduce overall logistics costs by 29 percent to 31 percent. FINAT Launches #LABELicious 2020 Edition FINAT, the European self-adhesive and narrow web industry association, is launching the second edition of its #LABELicious Competition. The Competition was introduced last year as part of FINAT’s aim to reach out to students and young professionals around Europe as part of the association’s campaign to attract young tal- ents to its workforce. This year’s edition will focus on a selected number of countries, education institutes and label companies. The objective is to challenge future talents to share their ideas about the future of labels and packaging, and build connections between education, industry and talents. In 2019, the first edition of #LABELicious, the Eu- ropean design competition for future talents in label and packaging design, climaxed during Labelexpo in Brussels with a well-attended Award Ceremony. The winners, young talents from Italy and Belgium, were selected for their outstanding work from nearly one hundred registrants from all countries across Europe. The 2020 edition of #LABELicious, will build onward on the success in 2019 with a special focus on practi- cal collaboration between educational institutions for packaging technology and graphic design in European countries and label and packaging manufacturers that are operating in these countries.

Program to connect converters, brand owners, recy- clers and others, to direct waste that would have pre- viously been discarded in landfills into the production of cellulose paper and paper towels. It was recognized by the judges as a blueprint for the future develop- ment of the industry. The Rising Star Award, sponsored by the Label Acad- emy and Avery Dennison, went to Elizabeth Yerecic. Since joining Yerecic Label full-time in 2017, she has already become a key figure in the company’s growth. She was quick to join the workforce development committee atTLMI and helped to co-chair two sessions, ‘Training for your Future’ and ‘Strategies for Hiring’, at the 2019 printThink meeting.Yerecic heads Yerecic’s Product Development Cross Functional Team, and suc- cessfully launched Yerecic Label’s SustainLabel! line.A passionate environmentalist, Yerecic also lobbied for Yerecic Label to join the Association of Plastics Recy- clers and quickly became an active member. The final award, the R. Stanton Avery Global Achieve- ment Award, which was previously announced in early August, went to Federico D’Annunzio, BOBST Group. This award, sponsored by Avery Dennison, honors the contribution an influential individual has made which has positively impacted the growth of the internation- al label industry.

Avery Dennison Launches Matrix Recycling Program Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials has launched a scalable matrix recycling program with RoadRunner Recycling to help label converters achieve their zero waste-to-landfill goals. Through a venture investment in RoadRunner Recycling’s Series C round, Avery Dennison is expanding the accessibil- ity of matrix recycling and leveraging RoadRunner’s machine learning technology to optimize matrix col- lection and recycling processes. The pilot phase of the program is open to converters in select markets. Matrix is a byproduct of the label converting pro- cess that is often sent to landfills because the chem- ical composition of the material makes it difficult to recycle. The pilot program focuses on the economics and logistics associated with collecting matrix waste, while identifying recycling opportunities to enable ef- ficient future matrix circularity. The pilot is available in the Maryland,Chicago,New Jersey and Southern Penn- sylvania markets. The pilot will enable Avery Dennison and RoadRunner to grow the knowledge base that en- hances the performance of the machine learning algo- rithms as more material is recycled. Additionally, the program will explore alternatives to waste-to-energy for recycled matrix waste. NarrowWebExchange.com Offers Virtual Marketplace The newly launched NarrowWebExchange.com is a virtual marketplace for used equipment for the narrow web industry. This site represents an opportunity for buyers and sellers to connect on a site dedicated spe- cifically to the narrow web industry. NWE.com has reportedly developed a process that addresses many of the concerns that have likely dis- couraged similar attempts in the past. Most notable is the transferring of large amounts of money for an equipment transaction. On NWE.com the money that changes hands between a buyer and a seller for any transaction is done safely and securely, off-line. Buy- ers and sellers simply communicate payment details through NWE.com’s Site Communication System to complete a transaction. The Site Communication System is another key fea- ture that boosts the confidence between buyers and sellers. There are two communication channels avail- able to users. Buyers can post questions, and Sellers can post answers that are viewable by all users. Or, buyers and sellers can communicate privately by using the site email systems, which is anonymous, only revealing site usernames and not users’ personal email addresses.

Miraclon has announced that the Global Flexo In- novation Awards — to honor businesses that are pioneering the transformation of the flexo industry — are open for submissions from companies wish- ing to be recognized for their innovative commercial packaging projects printed using KODAK FLEXCEL NX Plates. The awards are open to any prepress provider, print- er or brand (team entries are encouraged). Entries will be judged by an independent panel of flexo industry experts on four criteria: the degree of creativity in the graphic design of the project, conver- sion from other print processes to flexo, the efficiency of the company’s workflow and the level of sustain- able print in the project.

Acucote Introduces Wash Off Adhesive

Acucote, a pressure-sensitive adhesive coating man- ufacturer, has introduced WOff, a Wash Off Adhesive. This water-based formula provides debonding of non-recyclable label materials from PET and glass con- tainers, making them recoverable. Debonding occurs when the container is processed utilizing a water temperature of 88 degrees C/190 de- grees fahrenheit or higher with an alkaline solution. This sink/float recycling process reportedly cleanly separates the label from the container and PET flakes. WOff is recommended for beverage and household applications where the container will pass through its recycling stream and the PET flake process. It is APEO-free.

MacDermid Expands Support With Sightcall

MacDermid Graphics Solutions (MGS) has added the SightCall visual assistance platform, which integrates with MacDermid’s Salesforce platform and is an inter- active tool for virtual communication between cus- tomers and technicians. This program enables live audio and video transmit- ted from a mobile device to a MacDermid technician during remote maintenance. The technician can see and assess the situation via live video, allowing for rap- id and complete evaluation of the issue. MacDermid technicians can reportedly now see and share valuable information, improving communi- cation, reducing misunderstandings, and accelerating problem resolution.

TLMI Becomes Green Tier Charter Signatory

Web Blast

TLMI has become a signatory of the Wisconsin De- partment of Natural Resources GreenTier Charter Pro- gram. The Green Tier Charter is for superior environ- mental performance within the printing industry and is a collective that includes theWisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Specialty Graphics ImagingAsso- ciation (SGIA), Great Lakes Graphics Association, Flex- ographic Technical Association (FTA), andTLMI. Partic- ipating entities believe that implementing the Green Tier law with printing operations through the Charter will produce environmental results beyond what is likely under existing regulatory programs. The association signatories have established goals and commitments for the Charter collaboratively with the Department of Natural Resources and together the parties will identify key issues and work together to address those issues. Goals of the Charter include: • To inspire beyond-compliance environmental per- formance by the printing industry in an economically feasible manner; • To explore alternative approaches to address envi- ronmental performance that extend beyond regulato- ry requirements; • To identify opportunities for improving regulatory efficiency; and •To encourage participation under the Green Tier program and the Sustainable Green Printing Partner- ship (SGP). Tarsus Makes Plans For Labelexpo Europe Tarsus Group, organiser of Labelexpo Europe, is plan- ning to deliver its most ambitious show to date in a year from now, bringing the global industry back to- gether after the challenges faced from the COVID-19 pandemic. “While the label and package printing industry has shown incredible ingenuity during the COVID-19 pan- demic, there is simply no substitute for the face-to-face contact that only a unique trade show like Labelex- po can bring,” Lisa Milburn, Managing Director, Label- expo Global Series. “Brussels Expo has invested in a world-leading air filtration and recirculation system which means the quality of air inside the halls is the same as the air quality outside.” Tarsus’ Labelexpo Europe 2021 operations team is already engaged in selecting contractors, cleaning and catering suppliers who will implement the highest standards of safety during the show itself, as well as during build-up and breakdown.
