SER UW WAPL
MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
This Mentorship Program fosters personal and career growth by connecting students with experienced professionals in the energy sector. Peer-to-Peer Mentorship Students in all of SER's Academic Programs are eligible to participate in peer-to-peer mentorship. Industry Mentorship Juniors and Seniors in all of SER's Academic Programs are eligible to be paired with an industry partner as available. Professional Development Students in the mentorship program for a full academic year will have all costs for two professional development opportunities covered by SER. Job Shadowing Students can shadow an available industry mentor for a day and directly learn what it means to work in the energy sector in the student’s intended career.

Commitment Scholarships Students may receive University Commitment and other classification-based scholarships through the University of Wyoming. Nielson Textbook Scholarships Available each semester to all declared ERMD majors with good academic standing, and enrolled in 12 or more credits.
Nielson Summer Session Scholarships
ERMD students taking a required course in summer to graduate, can apply in WyoScholarships to have tuition cost (no fees) covered.

Experiential learning is a cornerstone of SER. We provide students with unparalleled opportunities to connect with industry leaders and visit regional energy development sites, directly applying classroom knowledge to real-world challenges. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, students have opportunities to learn directly in the field. The funds listed in subsequent pages are dedicated to experiential learning, supporting travel and hands-on experiences that allow students to engage with the energy industry on the ground during their academic careers. Christine A. Barry Nuclear Energy Student Enrichment Fund
Designed to connect students with the future of energy, this enrichment fund makes it possible to travel to INL and participate in energy conferences centered on nuclear technologies.
Enbridge Discretionary This discretionary fund expands learning beyond the classroom by supporting immersive field trips, industry site visits, and participation in professional events such as NAPE. Through these experiences, students connect directly with industry professionals, explore real-world applications of their studies, and gain valuable exposure to career pathways that help shape their future success.

James E. Nielson Excellence Fund
A foundational source of support for SER, this fund is used to aid energy instruction across UW on topics important to Wyoming. The support spans SER's instruction, research, and outreach functions. This fund supports student travel expenses, enabling participation in conferences and field trips that provided valuable learning opportunities in energy-related topics and facilitates networking with industry professionals. They are also used to provide scholarships and textbooks for SER students. It helps retain top-tier talent across UW. Faculty Fellows were supported most recently within the departments of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences specifically Geology and Geophysics and Chemistry. The flexibility of this endowment allows SER to be nimble as we work to support UW faculty, sta , students and the state of Wyoming.
Martin E. Knauss Energy Student Fund This fund has supported travel to the DAPL Institute, and provides an opportunity for students to meet with industry leaders. The Martin E. Knauss Energy Student Fund has empowered students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings—through conference attendance and field visits—deepening their education and preparing them for impactful careers. It opens doors to experiences that shape both their academic and personal growth. Students have experienced the full spectrum of the oil and gas industry in a single overnight visit—beginning with a tour of an active drilling site and concluding with attendance at the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission hearing. 6
NextEra Energy Resources Excellence Fund in Professional Land Management Covering a wide range of industry-focused experiential learning, the NextEra fund includes field excursions, NAPE Expo attendance, and participation in events hosted by WAPL and DAPL. Students leave these events with clearer career direction, real professional relationships, and a stronger pathway into employment.
Professional Land Management Industry Partners Program Students receive hands-on, career-focused experiences through the SER Mentorship Program—including industry mentor shadow days, mentorship meetings, and professional development opportunities—as well as industry conferences through registration, travel, and lodging assistance. Funds also o set travel-related costs associated with the Energy Field Studies course and industry site visits.

Rita Meyer Nuclear Energy Excellence Fund The Excellence Fund fully supports student travel to energy conferences, ensuring access to valuable networking and experiential learning opportunities. Students visiting INL develop a deeper understanding of current nuclear technologies while connecting classroom knowledge to real-world applications in the energy sector.
York Future of Energy Excellence Fund
Supports student’s professional development through industry site visits, networking events, and conference attendance. It has given students invaluable exposure to real-world careers, helped them build meaningful industry connections, and expanded their understanding of opportunities beyond the classroom.

Ellbogen Nuclear Research Center Fund Thanks to the generous support through the John P. Ellbogen Foundation Nuclear Energy Research Center Fund, we were able to hire qualified instructors to teach specialized courses on nuclear energy that are critical to our students’ academic and professional development. Without this funding, we simply would not have been able to o er these courses as part of our newly launched Nuclear Energy Science Certificates. Their contributions directly enabled students to stay on track with their credentials and gain the skills necessary to succeed in today’s competitive workforce.
Rocky Mountain Power Foundation: Stewardship Report and Proposal Students accepted into this fund will have the opportunity to participate in field trips, mentor shadowing days, and additional hands-on industry learning experiences. Students can participate in a Moab Field Study course, where they explore applied geology and examined the potential for long-term carbon dioxide storage in real geological formations on a five day course. This immersive experience connected classroom theory to field-based observation and analysis, strengthening students’ understanding of carbon management solutions. Additionally, students can travel to the annual NAPE Expo, providing direct exposure to the energy industry, professional networking opportunities, and insight into current market trends, technologies, and career pathways.
