A MESSAGE FROM JERRY
Leaders,
Over the next few months we will begin to dig deeper into the four core values that we unveiled last month. However, before we begin digging into them deeper, we must first understand the importance of creating a value driven culture, and the critical need for Delta’s people to not only know our values, but actively live them. Core Values are the foundation of our company (Who We Are) . Our organization in a living breathing organism with a distinct personality. We express that personality through our values. In the past, we checked a box by having a list of so-called values that we could hang on the wall and include in our business plan. Heck, the first letter of each value even spelled out Delta. However, as great as these values may have been in theory, they did nothing to accurately represent who we are as an organization. Those values were not effectively being used in our decision making. Those values were nothing more than words on paper. In the book Scaling Up, Verne Harnish states, “ Core Values are the rules and boundaries that define the companies culture and personality, and provide a final “Should/Shouldn’t” test for all behaviors and decisions by everyone in the firm.” When faced with issues or difficult decision making, everyone within our organization must consult our core values, and incorporate them in the process. As a child growing up, my grandfather sat me down one day and said, “ Jerry, a man’s values are one of the most valuable asset’s that he will ever possess. Values are something that no one can ever take away from you, but you can choose to give them away. ” I don’t know about you, but I never want to be known as a someone who compromised on my personal core values. I also never want Delta to be known as an organization that is not “Who We Say We Are” by compromising on our values.
This month we will be looking closely at the Delta Core Value – “We Take Care of Each Other.”
Taking care of each other embodies Delta’s commitment to our people and our people’s commitment to each other. It is important to understand this value and how to apply it in our decision making. First, this value is 100% about the employee experience. An organization is not the sum of its buildings, computers, vehicles, equipment and other stuff. These things are merely tools for our people to use to carry our out mission to “Protect What People Value Most,” serve our customers, and reach our financial/business objectives. An organization is truly the sum of its people heading in the same focused direction.
So, buckle up and enjoy our journey to learning and understanding more about the Delta Core Values.
Jerry
DELTA VALUES: WE TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER
▪ We believe in our people and their dreams This means that we understand that our employees are people that have dreams and aspirations. Some of those dreams involve having future opportunities in our organization. Some of those dreams involve personal things like getting married, having a child, or running a full marathon. We believe that each of our people are partners in our journey and not just tools in a tool box.
▪ We promote and assist with continual self-improvement, and self-renewal
We provide an avenue for every individual to create and manage their own Individual Deployment Plan (IDP). Through the IDP process the individual employee works with their supervisor to create an intentional plan that is in alignment with the individual’s dreams/goals and the organization’s needs. We have unlimited access to many forms of training (Leadership, Personal Development, Business, Finance, Safety, Technical, etc.), and both support and ENCOURAGE our people to take advantage of these opportunities. We have numerous examples of how Delta has supported one another through difficult life challenges. It’s important that we all understand that as people we all face challenges. We have stories where an employee or family member was ill and paid time off was donated to help offset time lost. We also have team members who have provided meals and a kind ear to those families in need. It’s as simple as saying good morning as you pass one another in the hall, or asking “how are you?”, and genuinely wanting to know the answer. We must be sure to exhibit compassion, understanding, and grace towards others, not just during hard times, but every day. Empower We believe that everyone at Delta is a leader and every position within our company is held by those leaders. As such, we strive to empower all of our people to lead where they are at in the organization. This does not mean that everyone is in charge and no one is left to do the work. What it does mean is that everyone has the responsibility to influence others to act better, perform better, and improve in their current role. As a leader, each one of us has the power to make decisions which are in the best interest of our organization. Person before profit Delta believes that profit is an import piece of our business but not at the expense of our employees . We do not expect that our people work extra without compensation. We do not believe in misleading our employees to get better results. We do believe in transparency and a partnership with our people to reach mutually agreed upon goals. Profit should be a result of great people working together toward a common purpose . Safety before productivity Delta is 100% Committed to Zero. We do not ever want any of our people to work in unsafe conditions or perform unsafe tasks to increase productivity on a jobsite. Every Delta employee has the responsibility to stop work if there is an unsafe environment or they are being asked to perform an unsafe task. Each member of the Delta family has the right to be treated with dignity and respect. We never want anyone of our people to feel “less than” or belittled by any team member, or supervisor. We are all human beings , and no one at Delta is above anyone else. We believe there are no circumstances warranting unkind words, raised voices, or insults. Should you ever disrespect or hurt another employee , we expect you will do your best to restore that relationship in a timely and sincere manner. Work hard and have fun LaMar Hayward says it best, “ I want to make sure that I am giving more than I take and enjoy myself in the process .” Delta relies on its people, for every single one of us play a vital role in the organization’s success. It is important that we all strive to meet our obligations and commitments, perform quality and timely work, be safe, and enjoy what we do.
▪ Delta is a family; supporting every member of it through life’s challenges
▪
▪
▪
▪ Treat all with dignity and respect

Safety Win Highlight
St. George Branch
This month’s safety win doubles as an “Atta-Boy”:
“Team,
The intent of the email is to show appreciation to Droop for what a great example his for the company and the hard work he performed in the St George Office this week. Not only is he a great guy to be around, but he works hard, and has a focused intent to the concern of safety. While going about his duties, he noticed an unsafe feature in our shop in the upstairs room. He stopped what he was doing, gathered materials necessary, and constructed a pony wall as an addition to what could have at any time been a serious fall affecting any one of our employees. Many of which he hardly knows.
We’re grateful for his hard work and his extra care. Thanks, Droop!” -Rheanna Bristol
Way to go Droop! Your initiative and dedication to safety are what the Delta Way is all about.
We want to continue sharing both safety wins and stop work situations. If you are involved in a safety win or stop work situation, please send a description of the incident along with a photo to: Quentin Johnson & Dennis Orgill
(Quentin.johnson@deltafriesystem.us) and Dennis Orgill (Dennis.Orgill@deltafiresystems.us).

“Wellness is the complete integration of body, mind, and spirit - the realization that everything we do, think, feel, and believe, has an effect on our state of well-being.
~Greg Anderson
Since we started the APi Wellness program in January of this year, the desire to be healthier greatly increased in our different offices. We can see there is awareness and a constant search for better and healthier ways to live our lives, especially our work-life. We have completed most of our required challenges, and are now working on completing the last two which are still on-going: Office Environmental Challenge and Biometric Health Screening . These two need to be completed by the end of October 2018. Please don’t forget to support your local Wellness Champions in their efforts to make this happen for your office. Give them ideas and suggestions or send those to me via email.
Wellness Program Completed in August:
Sun Safety E-Mail Campaign
During the hot August month, we sent a series of emails with tips and advice on how to be safe while enjoying the sun. These tips and advice focused on preventing skin cancer, and how to enjoy the beauty of summer sun and the outdoors, while keeping ourselves safe from the damages that sun exposure can cause. This information is helpful and can save lives. If any of you missed these useful tips and advice, please let us know and we will email them to you. You may want to share with others!! On-going

SALT LAKE CITY: GIRL SCOUTS OF AMERICA, CAMP FURY BURN DEMONSTRATION
Lead by some of Salt Lake's finest female firefighters, Camp Fury Utah presents attending Girl Scouts the chance to catch a glimpse of what it takes to have a career in public safety. The three-day camp teaches the young women everything from basic skills to safety training. They learn first aid, ground ladder throwing, the mechanics of hoses, and what it's like to hold the hose as water starts actively pumping through it. The ladies get to experience rappelling, and window jumping while wearing full firefighter gear. As a simulation of the conditions firefighters can experience in smoky buildings that have lost power, they even practice crawling on their knees blindfolded. Overall, the camp offers these young women an experience of a lifetime, and helps to breaks the stigma that public safety careers are for men only. At the conclusion of the three-day camp, the Girl Scouts get the opportunity to witness a side-by-side burn demonstration. Two mock living rooms are set up next to each other; one equipped with fire sprinklers, and one without, allowing them to see firsthand the difference a sprinkler system makes. For the second year in a row, Delta Fire Salt Lake was a proud sponsor and participant in this simulation burn, supplying everything for the demonstration from the burn trailer to all the furniture needed.
Matt Finlayson, Jose Lima, and Zach Barney volunteered their time, putting in hard work removing burned furnishings, re-rocking, and painting the container. Vince Newberg, Bo Corbin, Christine Gil, and David Dawaele hosted as the event's emcees

He joins both committees with an interest category of Installer/Maintainer
“I just wanted to let you know that the inspection we received from Bret and his partner Danielle was probably by far the most thorough and professional inspection I’ve experienced in my four years here. Not that the other inspections weren’t conducted properly, but some of these issues we are having have been pre-existing and were not treated as important so I just wanted to say that this caliber of personnel was exceptional.”
-Phyllis Snedeker, College Courtyard Apartments (RENO)
“Lamar,
I want to thank you and your crew for another awesome job at AMWTP! We had a lot to accomplish this year with the annual and 5-year inspections on 15 systems in WMF-676 and we got through it with flying colors. As you know this build is very complex with lots of obstacles. Tyler Miller and Jamie Conley came through prompt and professional. They both worked very hard on this huge inspection cycle! As always it’s been a pleasure working with you and your team!!”

CHIPOTLE SWEET POTATO NOODLE SALAD PREP TIME: 10 MINUTES TOTAL TIME: 45 MINUTES
INGREDIENTS FOR THE SALAD • olive oil • 2 sweet potatoes, spiralized • 2 ears of corn (kernels cut off the cob), or 1 can of corn • 1 can of black beans, drained and rinsed • 2 cups chopped fresh greens (spinach, kale, arugula, anything!)
FOR THE DRESSING • 1/3 cup olive oil •
3 tablespoons water
• 2 individual chipotle peppers, canned in abodo sauce • 2 cloves garlic • 1 TBSP agave or honey • juice of one orange • juice of one lemon or lime
INSTRUCTIONS • Preheat oven to 350.
• Pulse all dressing ingredients in a food processor until smooth. • Heat olive oil in large skillet over medium heat. Add sweet potato noodles and toss until softened (about 10-15 minutes). • Coat with a layer of the dressing, remove from skillet, set aside. • Wipe skillet out so that it is dry. Add corn kernels and black beans and cook on medium-high until kernels are slightly blackened (about 10-15 minutes). • Coat with a layer of dressing, and mix in sweet potato noodles. • Add in chopped greens, and add dressing as desired. • Transfer to baking dish and bake, uncovered for 10-15 minutes. NOTES: • The salad does not need to be baked, and can be served straight off the skillet. • For a more sugar-free version, the chipotle peppers can be substituted for chili powder, to taste. • When roasting the corn and beans, be sure to use a high quality pan, non-stick or well-seasoned cast iron. They are meant to be DRY roasted without oil or butter, which can do a number on your skillet.
