Winter work for wood ducks Staff and volunteers for the South Nation Conservation Agency (SNC) spent a frosty Friday early in the year on the ice in the Leitrim Wetland area installing wood duck nesting boxes. Winter is the best time for this kind of conservation work as the ice surface of the marsh allows those involved to walk over to potential nesting sites in the middle of the frozen wetlands. The boxes serve as nesting sites for wood ducks and the Eastern screech owl, both of which prefer tree cavities facing the water as shelters for their eggs.
