FPA Releases LCA Case Studies

FLAG Introduces Two New Programs FLAG (Flexo Label Advantage Group LLC) has introduced two new programs to facilitate Member and Vendor Partner communication and connections in 2021. The first program is a series of monthly Round Tables, which were first introduced at the FLAG Virtual Summit in October, 2020. Round Ta- bles provide a way that independent converters can share business chal- lenges and opportunities in a frank and open setting.Although FLAG has been offering Peer Groups for years, the new Member-only Round Tables are ad hoc and require no long-term commitment. They were reportedly so popular at the Virtual Summit that FLAG has made them a regular part of their ongoing programming. Round Tables The first monthly Round Table took place on January 28 and was attend- ed by 14 individuals from 11 FLAG Member companies. The second program enables FLAG Vendor Partners to share new prod-

ping impacts by comparing flexible packaging to other formats across a range of products. For the report, FPA partnered with PTIS, LLC, and five different LCA case studies were developed using the EcoImpact-COM- PASS LCA software, which allows for quick life cycle compari- sons between different package formats, including peanut butter packaging; cereal packaging; shoe packaging; laundry detergent packaging; and e-commerce mailer. All primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging, including dun- nage from the packages, were used for the assessment. Dunnage

APR, Fathom Optics Sign Technical Support Agreement All Printing Resources (APR) and Fathom Optics have signed an exclusive US technical support agreement. Fathom Optics, a software development company spun-off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technol- ogy (MIT), has introduced a software platform that brings printed 3D and motion graphics to packaging without requiring specialty inks or substrates and without the need for additional materials, such as len- ticulars or foils. Fathom Optics’ algorithmic technology leverages existing press innovations to add depth, motion, and chromatic effects to a wide range of print applications including prime labels, shrink sleeves, and product au- thentication. The software platform fits into standard design and pre-press workflows. It is based on light field technology, originally developed for digital 3D displays, and currently works with offset and roll-to- roll narrow to mid-web printing. The company also plans to expand to digital and other applications in the near future. Through this technical agreement, APR will be a source for process certification, platemaking, produc- tion orders from onboarded/certified converters, and design services.

may be either paper or plastic based, and includes crumpled paper, corrugated inserts, air pillows, and bubble wrap. A dimensional weight and economics comparison for e-commerce was also developed to highlight that the flexible packaging formats demon- strated clear and distinct advantages in reducing the dimensional weight across the product categories. Additionally, the product-to-package ratio, as well as the amount of packaging that is landfilled for 1,000 kg of each product, was determined. The amount of packaging landfilled was based on the recycling rates for each material while assuming none of the flexible packages were recycled. However, most flexible packaging used in e-com- merce applications, including bubble dunnage or poly mailers, are made of LDPE,which can be recycled with grocery bags and other films as part of the store drop- off program. These materials can qualify for the How- 2Recycle store drop-off designation if they go through the certification process. The results from many of the case studies show that flexible packaging has more preferable environmental attributes for carbon impact, fossil fuel usage, water usage, as well as material disposed of when compared to other package formats, according to the report.

Smurfit Invest $40m In Latin America Business Smurfit Kappa is investing $40 million in its paper sacks business in Latin America, expanding and mod- ernizing its operations. The company said it was making the investment in response to market trends and the need for environ- mentally sustainable paper sacks.Among the planned work is the further modernization of machinery in Co- lombia, with a new machine already installed at the Palmira facility and fully operational. The $9.5 million investment has increased capacity at the plant by 100 million paper sacks per year, and reportedly improved quality. Smurfit plans to modern- ize sack paper machinery in Cali, Colombia, with a $19 million investment that will increase production capacity as well as the quality and performance of the sacks paper. In Costa Rica, a $1 million investment is set to further improve the plant in San José.The company said a new flexographic printer is ready for installation there. Wasatch Container Opens Doors For AICC Members Founded in 1995, Wasatch Container is a custom packaging design and manufacturer in Salt Lake City, Utah.Wasatch specializes in corrugated shipping box- es, retail boxes, point of purchase displays, foam fab- rication, and wooden crates. The company opened its doors, virtually, to more than 300 AICC members. The tour was guided by Jerry Frisch, the founder of Wasatch Container. After a brief company history, Frisch invited the second generation of Wasatch Con- tainer, Lauren and Ryan Frisch, to give an overview of some of the company’s specialties. Frisch then walked participants onto the floor of their original building, a 30,000-square-foot facility built in 1995, which houses its mini flexo folder gluer, a 50-inch flexo, several rotary die-cutters, unitizers, and several other machines in their compact space. The tour then moved onto the design department, sharing their 2-D and 3-D rendering capabilities and their new, high-speed CAD cutting table. After a visit to Wasatch’s ink kitchen, and spending time at each ma- chine, the tour moved to the other buildings that house their crate and foam divisions. In the foam space, Frisch showed how they do die-less die cutting and how their waterjet die cutter works and other foam fabrication. AICC’s upcoming virtual tours include The BoxMak- er in Kent, Washington, on Wednesday, February 17, and Utah PaperBox in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Tuesday, March 9.

Third Smyth Plant Receives SGP Certification The Sustainable Green Printing Partnership (SGP) announced that Smyth Companies’ plant in Austin, Minnesota, has achieved SGP certification. This is the third Smyth facility to earn SGP certification, joining Smyth locations in Bedford,Virginia, and Bos- ton, Massachusetts. SGP is the only sustainable printing certification in the United States and Canada requiring a comprehen- sive facility audit evaluating the three areas of sustain- ability – people, planet and profit. “With our third facility SGP certified, we’re showing our industry and communities that Smyth is a sustain- ability leader,” said Scott Fisher, President of Smyth. “Our SGP certification is important to our customers as a vital part of their sustainable supply chain, and our communities are proud that we’re committed to safe and sustainable business practices.” For more than a decade, Smyth has been making a commitment to itself and its customers to protect the health of the earth’s natural environment and conserve its energy resources. SGP’s multi-attribute comprehen- sive certification was a natural progression and signifi- cant next step for Smyth because it fully encompasses operation’s production and office practices along with proven methodology specifically developed for the printing industry. Smyth uses best practices outlined by SGP to enhance its processes for making socially re- sponsible decisions that positively impact the environ- ment, providing its customers with sustainable supply chain options, and safeguarding the health and safety of its employees. Facilitated by AIM, the European Brands Association, HolyGrail 2.0 is a pi- lot project with the objective to prove the viability of digital watermarking technologies for accurate sorting and consequently higher-quality recycling, as well as the business case at a large scale. MacDermid is one of more than 100 companies and organizations from the complete packaging value chain, which are part of HolyGrail 2.0. The initiative has ambitious goals to solve the complexities surrounding the recycling of post-consumer plastic packaging for a truly Circular Economy. Digital watermarks are imperceptible codes covering the surface of consumer goods packaging. These codes can be read by cameras and encode a wide range of attributes such as manufacturer, SKU, type of plastics used and composition for multilayer objects, food vs. non-food usage, etc. The information can be used throughout the entire packaging value chain.Ultimate- ly, when the packaging reaches a waste sorting facility, the digital watermarks can be detected and encoded on the sorting line, which then is able to sort the pack- aging in corresponding streams. This would result in better and more accurate sorting streams, thus conse- quently in higher-quality recyclates to be re-used, sup- porting a Circular Economy. Paper, Packaging Industry Gains Positive Marks In a year like no other, consumers experienced a transition to online shopping, learning, and working, but those aware of the Paper & Packaging – How Life Unfolds campaign reported double-digit boosts in pos- itive attitudes and perceptions of essential, sustainable paper and packaging products. New data from Isobar, a renowned market research company, reveal that consumers aware of the campaign prefer paper-based product packaging nearly 2 to 1 over plastic; and, 33 percent, or one in three, avoid plastic product packag- ing if they can. The Attitude and Usage Tracking (A&U), conducted by Isobar in November 2020, measures the results of the Paper and Packaging Board’s (P+PB) campaign and shows that 86 percent trust the products made by the paper and packaging industry, up 7 points over the five-year average.Eighty-four percent view paper-based product packaging as an essential part of everyday life, up 14 points over the five-year average, and 77 per- cent think more highly of companies that package their products in paper-based packaging, a 14 percent increase over the five-year average, and a 33 percent increase since the start of the campaign in 2015. Isobar’s 2019 Segmentation study for P+PB showed that 84 percent of consumers expressed concern over the environment; however, natural, paper-based mate- rials offer a recognized antidote, with A&U data show- ing that 86 percent report corrugated boxes are easy to recycle and 87.3 percent agreeing that recycling pa- per-based products is still worthwhile. For more information about the findings, read the 2020 Impact Report or learn more about the campaign at www.howlifeunfolds.com .
