CONSTRUCTION PEOPLE WINNER: Apprentice of the Year RYAN GILLEECE TRACEY BROTHERS

An exceptional apprentice, demonstrating professionalism, leadership and commitment to excellence in both the workplace and his academic studies, Ryan Gilleece has quickly established himself as a highly-valued team member at Tracey Brothers Ltd. He is currently completing a Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) in Quantity Surveying & Construction Management (Level 6) at Ulster University. Having developed a passion for construction while working weekends and holidays at his family’s quarry firm, quantity surveying appealed to Ryan as a combination of the commercial and technical aspects of construction. Now three years into his HLA, Ryan’s commitment to personal and professional development is evident in two Dean’s List Awards, an Apprentice Commendation Award and progression towards RICS-accredited Chartership. He has progressed from working under the guidance of experienced colleagues at Tracey Brothers Ltd to taking sole responsibility for cost management on a €13m project, managing subcontractors accounts, liaising with site teams and negotiating directly with the client PQS whilst reporting to Tracey Brothers Ltd senior management. He has played a key role in supporting the implementation of BIM ISO 19650 processes and Cubit software, helping improve digital collaboration, information management and commercial reporting across projects. Ryan has also shown willingness to support and mentor year-out students within the company, and offers guidance, encouragement and practical support to less experienced team members.

Praised by the client as its ‘best-ever collaborative arrangement’, Heron Bros’ delivery of the new NRC Ballymena campus is an outstanding example of excellence in partnering. Heron Bros’ second major project for NRC, the £55m, 16,800sqm Ballymena site consolidated previous end-of-life buildings into a single, high-performance campus. Working collaboratively with the client, designers and end users, the contractor undertook around 300 staff consultations, using 3D modelling and VR to help users understand and shape their new facilities. This collaborative approach extended through relocation, additional works and programme changes. Achieving BREEAM Excellent, the project scored 45/45 in the Considerate Constructors Scheme and has boosted student satisfaction to 98%.
