Shimna Integrated College in Newcastle is a £28m design-and-build project, funded through the UK government’s Fresh Start Programme supporting integrated education, and providing accommodation for 620 pupils. Glasgiven Contracts Ltd was appointed as main contractor for the 10,000sqm post-primary school, with the build commencing in 2023 and delivered in four phases to maintain uninterrupted operation of the existing adjacent school during construction. Phase one involved the construction of a new two- and three-storey school incorporating 43 classrooms, science labs, a manufacturing and technology department, resource, preparation and ancillary rooms, and sixth-form study. Also included were a library, multi-purpose
hall, canteen and kitchen, fitness suite, reception and administration offices, while external works included a maintenance building, glasshouse, external play areas, access space, parking and landscaping. Phase two demolished the old school building, phase three saw construction of the sports hall and changing facilities, and phase four completed the project with final site works and parking. Glasgiven appointed and managed all sub-contractors and suppliers, including specialist contractors, to undertake demolition, civils works, construction fitting out, and installation of mechanical and electrical services.
