BALLINREES WATER TREATMENT WORKS, COLERAINE PROJECT PROFILE
LOWRY BUILDING & CIVIL ENGINEERING HAS DELIVERED A MAJOR UPGRADE TO WATER SUPPLY ON THE NORTH COAST, MAINTAINING UNINTERRUPTED SERVICE THROUGHOUT CONSTRUCTION… Boosting water quality & security of supply
Lowry Building & Civil Engineering, as part of the DLJ Water Limited Joint Venture, was appointed by NI Water to deliver a £19.5m upgrade of Ballinrees Water Treatment Works. It involved construction of a new treatment building to improve water treatment standards and provide additional water storage in the event of an emergency, as well as a new pumping station to improve the overall efficiency of the works. Commenced in 2023 and completed in 2026, the upgrade has improved water quality to meet essential Drinking Water Regulations, and security of supply, for around 75,000 customers in the Coleraine area towards Portrush and Ballymoney as well as parts of Limavady and Derry/ Londonderry.
The upgrade was delivered in a carefully-planned sequence to allow the works to remain operational throughout. As part of the programme, new assets including a GAC treatment building and new pumping station were constructed, commissioned and tested before being brought into service, ensuring no customers were out of supply while the upgrade was completed. Works completed by Lowry Building & Civil Engineering included a new granular activated carbon treatment building, pumping station, wash water tanks, reinforced concrete process structures and associated infrastructure, increasing treatment capacity and providing additional emergency water storage.
