Did You Know?

ANCC & the Evolution of Tennis Between 1925 and 1927 the Army, Navy and Marine Country Club acquired its first parcels of property, including a Knights of Columbus clubhouse and two poorly maintained clay tennis courts. By the clubhouse opening on August 5th, 1927, the courts were playable and by early spring of 1928 supporting heavy play. In September 1931, the executive committee authorized three new courts to be built with the newly developed and fast drying Har-Tru surface. Two more Har-Tru courts were added in 1932 and the two clay courts resurfaced with concrete in 1934. With four more Har-Tru courts on line in 1936 the Club was one of the three or four most prominent centers of tennis in the Washington area. Tennis had become a major element of the ANCC experience.
