The inauguration of the new counties council takes place in mid-December but there may be a little problem finding someone to take the position of warden of the counties for next year. The tradition is that the position of warden for the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) alternates each year between the mayors of the eastern part of the counties and those of the west. The results of the re- cent municipal election have left Robert Kirby, UIFJODVNCFOUNBZPSPG&BTU)BXLFTCVSZ Township, as the sole experienced candidate GSPNUIFFBTUFSOQBSUPGUIFDPVOUJFT)FIBT served as warden in past years, during the UJNFIFIBTSFQSFTFOUFE&BTU)BXLFTCVSZ at UCPR council. “I hadn’t planned on running,” Kirby said during an interview following the October 24 counties council session. “I’ve got quite a lot on my plate right now. I won’t be putting my name in for warden.” The problem is that the other three east- ern mayors are all new to their positions as NBZPST UIPVHIBUMFBTUPOF /PSNBOE3JPQFM of Champlain Township, has extensive past experience as a councillor for Champlain Township to help him with becoming accus- tomed to his new duties. Il y a deux mois à peine, Xavier Downton, âgé de quatre ans et demi et élève du jardin à l’école Ste-Trinité de Rockland, s’apprêtait à débuter sa toute première saison de hockey sur glace. « Il a pratiquement grandi dans les arénas, a fait valoir la mère du tout petit, Rachelle Downton. Son grand frère joue au hockey et Xavier voulait lui aussi jouer. » Déjà, le jeune Xavier posait fièrement, vêtu de la tête au pied avec son équipement. Mais ces rêves de devenir une vedette de hockey se sont effondrés, alors que du jour au lendemain, celui-ci s’est retrouvé atteint de paralysie flasque aiguë. La maladie, qui peut provoquer une paralysie, est rare, mais grave. A family in Saint-Pascal-Baylon decided to promote literacy in their area by creating their very own small library. “Our family was very excited about the little library initiative put on by Clarence-Rockland,” explained Chris Kiff. “Coincidentally, before we were aware the municipality was putting these libraries in, we installed our own on the front of our property at 1795 Du Lac Road in Saint-Pascal-Baylon. It was met with great excitement by the community, at one point we had a crowd in front of our driveway to exchange children’s books in our box.” The man explained that they had the idea to create such a library after seeing similar boxes in the Glebe and Old Ottawa South neighborhoods in Ottawa. — supplied photo

L’agente de bord, Martine Leduc, a expliqué aux élèves quels étaient son rôle et ses responsabilités à bord de l’avion. Elle leur a aussi expliqué, entre autres, ce qui se trouve dans l’avion et le fonctionnement de la cuisine, des toilettes, de la cabine de pilotage. Mme Leduc a fait comme si elle travaillait. Elle a étampé les passeports (résumé des habitudes et habiletés de travail) de chaque élève, elle a numérisé les cartes d’embarquement, puis distribué la collation, au grand bonheur des élèves. Pendant la présentation de Mme Leduc, les élèves devaient mettre en pratique les stratégies d’écoute apprises en salle de classe. —photo fournie

Des élèves des sept écoles secondaires du Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est ontarien (CSDCEO) ont participé à un camp de leadership, les 10 et 11 octobre derniers au Centre Notre-Dame de La Rouge. Ce sont des élèves des gouvernements des élèves, du Sénat des élèves et du Groupe Franco-Catho qui ont eu la chance de vivre une expérience enrichissante. L’objectif de l’activité était de s’arrêter pour réfléchir et d’échanger sur les valeurs identitaires qui sont essentielles pour exercer un leadership inspirant et influent. L’intention de ce camp était de faire vivre aux élèves et aux accompagnateurs, des ateliers de réflexion et des expériences culturelles sur les thèmes de la franco-force de la diversité culturelle, sur les façons de vivre sa catholicité aujourd’hui et sur la richesse des cultures autochtones. « Les jeunes sont allumés, branchés sur les enjeux sociaux actuels, et souvent en tête de file pour ce qui est de l’engagement social et de l’ouverture sur le monde », a fait valoir François Turpin, directeur de l’éducation et secrétaire du CSDCEO. CLARENCE-ROCKLAND HAS ITS VERY OWN GHOSTBUSTERS

You’re not dreaming. Clarence-Rockland has its very own Ghostbusters. “We don’t actually investigate ghosts,” explained Clarence-Rockland Ghostbusters founder Jake Sopiro. “We’re just a group of fans that decided to create our very own fan franchise. I started it in October 2017 and the response to it has been amazing!” According to the father of two, these so-called fan franchises are actually more common than people might think. Take for example Star Wars. “There’s fan franchises throughout the world,” said Sopiro. These franchises are made up of fans that dress up as their favorite characters BOEQBSUJDJQBUFJOWBSJPVTFWFOUT.FNCFST of the Clarence-Rockland Ghostbusters are no different. “We take part in several fundrai- sers,” the founder highlighted. “We mostly raise money for the Ottawa Humane Society.” These activities include participation in UIF(SPVQF"DUJPO.BJTPOEFMBGBNJMMFT Halloween Parade, taking place on October 30. “We took part in the parade last year and we’re going to be doing it again this year.” The franchise also has an ongoing fundrai- ser, called Stuff the Puff. They ask residents of the area to help them fill a box in the shape of the recognizable marshmallow monster from the Ghostbusters movie. “We bring that box straight to the Humane Society,” explained Sopiro. In addition, the franchise will once again decorate two carts during the Rockland Santa Claus Parade. Founder always had a fascination for the paranormal The founder of the Clarence-Rockland Ghostbusters sips on a coffee as he re- counts how his interest in the paranormal began. “I always liked it,” he said smiling. “I remember watching the Ghostbusters cartoons as a kid. I’ve seen the movies countless times.” This led to the creation of the franchise later on in life, which in turn, led the man to take part in some paranormal investigations. “We sometimes help out Bytown Paranormal, an investigation team from Ottawa,” Sopiro

People really like seeing the flashing lights from the truck and the costumes.” Sopiro and another individual were there- fore allowed to spend up to four hours alone in the L’Orignal Jail, one of the oldest jails, and supposedly most haunted, jail in Ontario. “They let us use their equipment,” he
explained. “It was really fun.” When asked if he saw ghosts, Sopiro can’t help but smile. “Well we saw a door move BOEIFBSEGPPUTUFQT uIFBENJUTi/PX*N not saying that’s proof of ghosts. I’ll let you be the judge.” Recently, however, Sopiro undertook his very first real Ghostbuster mission, which IFDPNQMFUFETVDDFTTGVMMZi.ZOFJHICPS called me and told me her son had a hard time falling asleep because of the monsters in his closet,” chuckling as he explains the
situation. “I dressed up in the Ghostbus- ters costume and went over. I went in the bedroom and closed the door behind me. I made a lot of noises and came out of the room holding a trap in one hand, saying I had caught the ghost.” According to Sopiro, the boy now sleeps peacefully. Au cours de la Première Guerre mondiale, 21 453 médecins, brancardiers et infirmières ont porté les couleurs du Corps médical de l’armée canadienne (CMAC). Leur dévouement et leur ardeur ont permis à près de 90 % des soldats blessés ayant reçu des traitements médicaux de survivre. Dans des conditions parfois rudimentaires — notamment sur le front méditerranéen —, ces volontaires ont fait preuve de créativité et de sang-froid pour adapter les techniques médicales et sauver les combattants. De nou- velles procédures ont ainsi été développées, révolutionnant la médecine de guerre : trans- fusions sanguines, traitement des effets des gaz toxiques, extraction de métal à l’aide d’ai- mants, etc. Bon nombre des membres du CMAC ont servi à proximité du front et le service a subi des pertes durant la Grande Guerre. Au total, 1325 hommes et femmes ont perdu la vie dans l’exercice de leurs fonctions. Certains sont morts d’une maladie, d’autres ont succombé à des blessures causées par des tirs ou des bom- bardements ennemis. LES BLUEBIRDS Quelque 3000 infirmières canadiennes se sont enrôlées durant la Première Guerre mondiale, prêtes à sauver des vies. Parmi ces volontaires, 2504 ont servi outre-mer. Surnommées les Bluebirds en raison de leur uniforme bleu et de leur voile blanc, ces jeunes femmes — elles avaient en moyenne 24 ans — étaient

We have a proven track record providing CustomMillwork throughout Eastern Ontario and continue to grow. We have a great opportunity for an Installer for our Custom Millwork and Cabinetry. This is a permanent, full-time position. Applicants must have: 3 – 5 years experience installing cabinets and millwork, excellent site management and communication skills, the ability to work alone onsite or within a group environment, and the ability to read and interpret drawings. Installer must have and use their own tools and there will be some delivery required. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required. Wage is commensurate with experience.
