EMBRUN | Students at the Embrun Family Karate Club / Kajukenbo have won three Team Canada spots in the World Karate and Kickboxing Council’s (WKC) National Kajukenbo students win three Team Canada spots CANDICE VETTER candice.vetter@eap.on.ca

TeamTryouts in Ottawa over the May long weekend, a week after the school placed first out of 28 in yearly rankings (dojo) at the 5 Ring Grand Championship in Mas- son-Angers. The school earned a total of 540 cumu- lative points at the 5 Ring Championship tournament. Five Embrun club students qualified for the WKC’s National Team Try- outs held in Ottawa. Three of those martial artists, Sidney MacNeill, Megan Bowman and Dave Smith, will go on to represent Canada in the worldwide competition in Italy in October. Over 30 students from the school also

performed well at a recent tournament in Rockland. School owner and instruc- tor, Sigung John Lianis, gives full credit for all the recent accomplishments to his stu- dents, and praised their dedication, time and work. Most of the students come to the gym five or six days per week. Kajukenbo is sometimes called the first mixed martial art, and was started in Hawaii by martial artists of Filipino, Korean, Japa- nese and Chinese descent. It teaches not only defense, but also life skills, leadership and, says Lianis, who is a seventh-degree black belt, “that giving their best matters more than winning.”
