Coca-Cola Continues Sustainable Packaging Push Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) is switching the carriers on its multipacks from shrink wrap to paper- board to reduce packaging waste. CCEP estimates this change in its beverage packaging will remove about 4,000 metric tons of single-use plastic per year from its current supply chain. CCEP’s paperboard multipack carriers will be made from recyclable, sustainably sourced paperboard. The material will be certified via either the Forest Steward- ship Council (FSC) or the Programme for the Endorse- ment of Forest Certification (PEFC). The change of secondary packaging material aligns with Coca-Cola’s Action on Packaging Sustainability Ac- tion Plan, which focuses on making all of the company’s packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025. CCEP plans to eventually make not only its primary packaging, but also its secondary packaging, as sustainable as possible. Coca-Cola’s Action on Packaging plan includes sourc- ing recycled packaging materials, with a specific com- mitment to obtain at least 50 percent of the plastic for its polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles from recycled plastic. The company reports that in 2018, 98 percent of its packaging in Western Europe was recy- clable, and that about 28 percent of the plastic it used for packaging was recycled material. CCEP is also collaborating with technology partners such as Loop Industries to transform low-value plastic waste into high-quality PET resin. CCEP plans to sell the Honest tea, Glacéau Smartwa- ter and Chaudfontaine brands in bottles made from 100 percent recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) starting in 2020. Unilever Vows To Reduce Plastic Packaging Use Unilever, the British-Dutch conglomerate that owns Ben & Jerry’s,Vaseline, Dove and more, plans to halve its non-recycled plastic packaging by 2025.According to Unilever, the company currently uses about 700,000 tons of plastic packaging every year. Unilever has pledged to invest in several alternatives, such as reusable and refillable materials. Its goal is to reduce plastic use by 100,000 tons. The remaining re- duction will be covered by replacing new plastic with recycled materials. The company also said it will collect and recycle over 600,000 tons of plastic every year. The company plans to set its 2018 plastic use as a baseline. By 2025, Unilever hopes to use no more than 350,000 tons of non-recycled plastic.
