Celebrating Pride Month in NYC With Kids

June is Pride Month, and New York City offers families many opportunities to celebrate diversity, inclusion, and community together. As the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, NYC hosts a month-long calendar of events that welcome people of all ages and backgrounds. One of the biggest highlights is the annual NYC Pride March on Sunday, June 28, 2026. One of the largest LGBTQ+ civil rights demonstrations in the world, the march brings together participants, community groups, performers, and supporters from across the city and beyond. Families often line the streets to enjoy the colourful

community resources, and activities designed specifically for LGBTQ+ youth, their families, friends, and allies. Throughout June, families can also find Pride celebrations across the boroughs. Queens Pride takes place on June 7, while Brooklyn Pride is scheduled for June 13, offering additional opportunities to enjoy performances, community events, and celebrations closer to home. Beyond the major events, libraries, museums, bookstores, and cultural institutions throughout the city host Pride-themed storytimes, exhibitions, workshops, and family activities. These events provide wonderful opportunities to

atmosphere and celebrate the spirit of acceptance that Pride represents. Also taking place on June 28 is PrideFest, a free street festival featuring entertainment, community organisations, food vendors, activities, and family-friendly programming. The event is a great way for families to experience Pride in a welcoming environment while learning more about the organisations that support New York City’s LGBTQ+ community. For older children and teens, Youth Pride takes place on Saturday, June 27, at Pier 16 in the South Street Seaport. Hosted by NYC Pride, the free event includes live entertainment, carnival games, music,

talk with children about kindness, respect, and the importance of embracing people for who they are. Whether you attend a parade, explore a community festival, or simply take part in a local Pride event, June is a wonderful time to celebrate the diversity that makes New York City such a vibrant place to live and visit. Pride Month reminds us that every family deserves to feel welcomed, valued, and included. For the latest event information and any schedule updates, be sure to check organisers’ websites before attending.

generations. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning for a family tradition, Coney Island offers the perfect summer day by the water. Start your adventure by heading straight to the beach. Stretching for nearly three miles along the Atlantic Ocean, Coney Island Beach offers plenty of space for families to relax, build sandcastles, paddle in the waves, and soak up the summer sunshine. Arriving early helps secure a good spot and gives you time to enjoy the beach before the crowds build later in the day. When everyone is ready for a break from the sand, stroll along the famous Riegelmann Boardwalk. Running alongside the beach, the boardwalk is perfect for people-watching, grabbing a snack, and taking in the nostalgic atmosphere that has made Coney Island famous for more than a century.

the fun. As you approach the island, you’ll be treated to incredible views of Lower Manhattan, the Brooklyn waterfront, and New York Harbor. Once you arrive, head straight to The Yard, one of NYC’s most unique adventure playgrounds. Designed to encourage creativity and exploration, children can build, climb, invent, and play in a supervised environment filled with loose parts and imaginative play opportunities. Nearby, younger children will also find plenty of traditional playground equipment and open spaces to run around. From there, make your way to Slide Hill, home to some of the longest slides in New York City. Kids love racing down the giant slides while parents can enjoy spectacular views across the harbor. The surrounding Hills area also offers walking paths and some of the best photo opportunities on the island. As lunchtime approaches, you’ll find a variety of seasonal food vendors throughout Governors Island serving everything from tacos and sandwiches to ice cream and snacks. Many families choose to bring a picnic and take advantage of the island’s numerous lawns and shaded seating areas. Picnic Point, located on the southern tip of the island, offers beautiful views of the Statue of Liberty and is one of the most scenic picnic spots in the city. After lunch, consider renting bikes or surrey cycles to explore more of the island. Governors Island features miles of car-free paths that are perfect for family cycling. Along the way, you’ll pass historic forts, public art installations, gardens, and plenty of waterfront viewpoints. Families interested in history can also visit Castle Williams and Fort Jay, two historic military landmarks that offer a fascinating glimpse into New York City’s past. Throughout the summer, the island

hosts family-friendly events, performances, cultural programs, and outdoor activities, making every visit a little different. Before heading back to Manhattan, take some time to relax in Hammock Grove, where dozens of red hammocks are scattered among the trees. It’s the perfect spot to unwind, enjoy the breeze, and soak up the island’s laid-back atmosphere before catching the ferry home. Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventure, creative play, history, or simply a place to enjoy a slower pace for the day, Governors Island delivers. River, NY; Trailblazers, a day-travel camp; Camp Ilanot, a Hebrew immersion day camp; and short-term baseball and soccer intensives, among others. Information about all of 92NY’s camps can be found here. Lauren Wexler’s Tips The Importance of Summer Camp: “Summer camp can be a transformational experience, and a magical one,” says Wexler. “It’s a place where kids learn how to be independent, and how to make new friends – and it’s a place where they develop new interests and skills, while exploring a wide range of activities. Summer camp is also much-needed change of pace from the school year — there are no tests, no deadlines. Small but important moments are celebrated at camp. The experience can be so impactful that it leads to lifelong friends and long- term interests. Most importantly, it instills a sense of community.” So many choices, so little time : “It may seem like it’s too late to choose a summer camp, but the good news is that many camps offer both short-term and long-term options, and many still have space. Day camp in the country can be a rich experience, just as the sleepaway experience can be a formative one. City- based camps and specialty camps can also be impactful experiences.” “Parents should talk it through with their kids and home in on what exactly they are looking to get out of the summer. Mom groups on social media can also be a great to learn about certain camps that may not be on a family’s radar, but parents should still do their own research before making

an informed decision. There’s still time to find a great camp, the one that feels right.” You’ve narrowed it down and still can’t decide: “The best way to make a final decision when choosing between a few different camps is to have open, honest conversations with the camp director and camp staff. Parents should ask questions about the camp’s culture and values - and about how they communicate with parents about their kids (Daily updates? Weekly?). it’s also essential to make sure that the activities offered align with the kind of experience families have in mind.” Improving Mental Health: “Having a healthy self-esteem has always been important for a child’s development — it’s even more so now in the era of excessive screentime and social media, which can cause isolation. Camp can be a place of abundant positive reinforcement, and it’s uniquely set up to allow children to try new things, discover what they are good at and what makes them happy.” Getting Ready for Camp: “Shopping for camp gear together can really help build excitement. Parents can let their kids pick out a new backpack or water bottle, or a swimsuit or baseball glove - items they will look forward to using this summer. Also, many camps have in-person orientations or preview events, where families can connect with other families, as well as camp staff. Visiting the camp’s website can be helpful – kids can view photos and videos which will get them excited about camp, showing them exactly what to expect when they get there.” For more information, visit www.92NY.org

Last-Minute Summer Camp Shopping, And How To Get Ready For Camp Tips From 92ny Expert Lauren Wexler

Summer camp season is just around the corner, and while some families are excited and ready for the first day, others still need to answer the big question: Which camp is the best fit? 92NY’s longtime camp expert Lauren Wexler is available to help families in both areas — how to navigate the seemingly overwhelming camp landscape, while offering time-tested tricks to get ready for summer in the great outdoors, or the city.

Wexler, who oversees several 92NY camps as the Executive Director of Children’s Enrichment and Engagement, is available for interviews. She can also discuss the overall importance of summer camp, and its short and long-term impact on children and parents alike. Some of her tips for parents are below. 92NY’s camps, which serve children ages 3-14, include: Camp Yomi, a 70-year-old general interest day camp in bucolic Pearl

How to Avoid Summer Learning Loss

Summer is a time for relaxation, adventure, and making memories, but it can also be a period when children lose some of the academic skills they worked hard to build during the school year. The good news is that preventing summer learning loss doesn’t have to involve workbooks, strict schedules, or hours of study each day. One of the simplest ways to keep young minds engaged is through reading. Encourage children to read books that genuinely interest them, whether that’s graphic novels, mysteries, sports stories, or nonfiction topics they love. Even just 20 minutes of reading a day can help maintain literacy skills over the summer months. Summer is also the perfect opportunity to make learning part of everyday life. A trip to the grocery store can become a lesson in budgeting and math, while cooking together helps children practise measuring, following instructions, and problem-solving. Visits to museums, zoos, gardens, and historic sites can spark curiosity and introduce new ideas without feeling like school. For younger children, educational play is key. Building with blocks, completing puzzles, drawing, crafting, and playing board games all help develop critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills. Older children can benefit from activities that encourage independence, such as planning a family outing,

researching a destination, or managing a small summer project. Parents don’t need to recreate the classroom at home. Instead, focus on helping children stay curious. Ask questions, encourage exploration, and give them opportunities to discover new interests. Summer camps, enrichment classes, sports programs, and creative workshops can also provide valuable learning experiences while allowing children to socialise and have fun. Technology can play a role too when used thoughtfully. Educational apps, coding programs, virtual museum tours, and online learning platforms can help reinforce skills while keeping children engaged. The key is balance and ensuring screen time includes opportunities to learn, create, and interact. Most importantly, remember that learning happens everywhere. Whether children are reading under a tree, helping cook dinner, exploring a local museum, or spending a day at camp, they are building knowledge and developing important life skills. A summer filled with curiosity, conversation, reading, and exploration can help children return to school feeling confident, engaged, and ready for the year ahead.

5 Reasons Summer Camp is About More

or develops confidence through a theatre program may gain skills that extend far beyond the activity itself. Trying new things also helps children build resilience and independence. Not every activity will be a perfect fit, and that’s okay. Exploring different interests teaches children how to step outside their comfort zones, meet new friends, and develop confidence in unfamiliar situations. Summer programs can provide valuable opportunities for growth while keeping children engaged and active. Whether it’s a week-long STEM workshop, a sports clinic, a music program, a coding class, or an outdoor adventure experience, these activities allow children to learn new skills in a fun and supportive environment. The benefits often extend beyond the summer months. A child who discovers a love of robotics may join a school club in the fall. A budding artist may continue taking classes throughout the year. A young athlete may find a sport they want to pursue long-term. Summer can be the starting point for interests that shape a child’s future. Of course, children don’t need every minute of their summer scheduled. Downtime and free play remain important. The goal is not to fill every day with activities, but rather to provide opportunities for exploration, creativity, and personal growth. As you plan your family’s summer, consider encouraging your child to try something they have never done before. You never know where a single class, camp, or workshop might lead. The following Summer Camp Directory features a range of programs designed to help children learn, grow, stay active, and discover new passions throughout the summer months.

From field trips and performances to outdoor adventures and everyday moments spent with friends, camp provides experiences that help make summer feel truly special. More Than a Summer Schedule While summer camp certainly provides valuable childcare for working families, its benefits go far beyond convenience. Camp can help children grow socially, emotionally, and personally while creating opportunities for fun, exploration, and discovery. As you plan your family’s summer, consider the many ways a camp experience can help your child learn new skills, gain confidence, make friends, and create memories that last well beyond the season. Helping Kids Discover Their Passions This Summer Summer offers children something they don’t always have during the busy school year: time to explore. Without homework, tests, and packed schedules, kids have the opportunity to try new activities, develop interests, and discover passions that could stay with them for years to come. For some children, that passion might be found on a soccer field, basketball court, or dance floor. For others, it could be through art, music, coding, science, theatre, cooking, or even learning a new language. The key is giving children opportunities to explore a variety of experiences and find what excites them. Parents often feel pressure to choose activities that will help their children academically or strengthen future college applications. While there is certainly value in educational enrichment, summer can also be a chance for children to simply discover what they enjoy. A child who falls in love with painting at an art camp

neighbourhoods, and backgrounds, creating opportunities to meet new people and build social skills. Working together on activities, participating in team games, and sharing new experiences often helps friendships form naturally and can boost children’s confidence in social situations. 3. Children Discover New Interests The school year can be busy and structured, leaving little time to explore new hobbies and passions. Summer camp allows children to try activities they may not otherwise experience, from coding and robotics to theatre, sports, art, music, science, and outdoor adventures. Many lifelong interests begin with a single summer experience. A child who discovers a love of performing arts at camp may join a theatre program in the fall, while another may find a passion for STEM, sports, or creative arts. 4. It Builds Confidence and Resilience Camp encourages children to step outside their comfort zones. Whether it’s climbing a rock wall, performing in front of a group, learning a new skill, or simply meeting new friends, children are constantly presented with opportunities to grow. Not every challenge will be easy, but overcoming obstacles and achieving small successes helps children build resilience, confidence, and a stronger belief in their own abilities. 5. It Creates Lasting Memories Ask adults about their camp experiences, and many can still recall favourite activities, special traditions, and friendships years later. Summer camp often creates memories that stay with children long after summer ends.

Than Just Childcare

For many families, summer camp helps solve a practical challenge: keeping children engaged and supervised while school is out. But camp offers far more than simply filling the summer months. Whether children attend for a week, a month, or the entire summer, camp experiences can have a lasting impact that extends well beyond the final day. Here are five reasons why summer camp is about much more than childcare. 1. It Helps Children Build Independence Summer camp gives children opportunities to make decisions, solve problems, and navigate new situations on their own. Whether it’s choosing an activity, managing their belongings, or trying something unfamiliar, camp encourages children to become more confident and self-reliant. For many kids, camp provides a safe environment where they can develop independence while still having the support of caring adults and staff. 2. It Encourages New Friendships One of the most memorable parts of camp is often the friendships children make along the way. Camp brings together children from different schools,

What to Look for When Choosing a Preschool

Choosing a preschool is one of the first major educational decisions many parents make, and with so many options available, the process can feel both exciting and overwhelming. Whether you are considering a traditional preschool, a Montessori program, or another early childhood setting, finding the right fit for your child and family is key. Every child is unique, so it is important to look beyond rankings and recommendations and focus on what will help your child thrive. Consider your child’s personality, learning style, and developmental needs. Some children flourish in highly social environments, while others may benefit from smaller class sizes or a more structured approach. When visiting schools, pay close attention to the atmosphere. Do the children appear engaged and happy? Are teachers warm, attentive, and interacting positively with students? A nurturing environment where children feel safe, supported, and encouraged to explore is often one of the most important indicators of a quality program. Curriculum is another important consideration. Some schools focus on play-based learning, while others incorporate academic readiness skills or follow educational philosophies such as Montessori. Understanding how children spend their day can help you determine whether a program aligns with your family’s values and expectations. Parents may also want to consider practical factors such as location, school

hours, class size, teacher-to-student ratios, and available enrichment opportunities. While convenience matters, it is equally important to think about the overall experience your child will have each day. A strong preschool experience goes beyond academics. Early childhood programs help children develop social skills, independence, communication, confidence, and emotional resilience. Learning to share, take turns, solve problems, and build relationships with peers are all important parts of preparing for future success in school and beyond. Don’t be afraid to ask questions during tours and admissions events. Inquire about daily routines, communication with families, outdoor play, transitions, and how teachers support children’s individual needs. The answers can provide valuable insight into the school’s culture and approach. Most importantly, trust your instincts. Parents often have a strong sense of whether a school feels like the right fit. Finding a preschool where your child feels welcomed, supported, and excited to learn can set the stage for a positive educational journey. The following Preschool & Montessori Directory features a range of early childhood programs serving New York City families. We hope it helps you explore your options and find a learning environment where your child can grow, learn, and thrive.

Located in New York City’s Flatiron District, The École is an independent French-American bilingual school serving students from age two through Middle School. Rooted in the best of both the French and American educational traditions, The École cultivates intellectually curious, culturally fluent, and compassionate students prepared to engage thoughtfully with the world. Its distinctive bilingual program develops true biliteracy, enabling students not only to speak, read, and write in French and English, but also to think across cultures. Native-speaking teachers integrate the rigor of the French curriculum with the creativity and inquiry-based approach of American pedagogy, fostering academic excellence alongside critical thinking and empathy. Beginning in Maternelle and continuing through Middle School in a purpose-built campus on East 22nd Street, students learn in small classes within a close- knit community. Through a partnership with Léman Manhattan Preparatory School, families may continue a French-American pathway through high school and the International Baccalaureate Diploma, preparing graduates for a world without borders.
