entered into His presence, as our Lord said, “Where I am there shall also my servant be.” If the cemetery where their wasted bod ies were laid was the end, we should be comfortless; but we belieVe that the spir its of our beloyed ones are in His safe keeping “until the day dawn and the shadows flee away,” and that on that glorious resurrection morning we shall meet those who are waiting in His pres ence, until the rest of His redeemed ones who are still running the race of patience and hope, shall hear the trumpet call to meet Him in the air. Our God graciously hides from them the sorrows and cares of the earth that their rest and joy may be complete; and because they are safe and glad we sorrow not as the world, but in certain hope; and we seek to wait patient ly for the coming of our Lord. The hope of that glad day nerves us on amidst the Sorrows and disappointments of this earthly scene. And as surely as they are in His presence, shall we also be with Him and with them. Life is not cheerless while we believe in the Word of the Lord: nor is death hopeless as we re member the glorious resurrection of our Saviour, neither should the present be aimless, nor the future meaningless be cause we know by the Word, by His holy Word, that “Our Hope is sure and our Home secure For us, and loved ones gone before. Our Saviour cometh soon.” Praying About a Key "In everything by prayer and supplica tion with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” (Phil. 4:6). Mr. Spurgeon said: “I remember hear ing it said of a godly man: ‘Mr. So-and- so is a gracious man, but he is very strange; for the other day he prayed to God about a key he had lost.’ The person who told it to me regarded with astonish ment the idea of praying to God about a lost key; and he seemed altogether sur prised when I assured him that I prayed in like manner. What! Pray about a key? Yes. Please tell me how big a thing must be before you can pray about it? If a certain size is appointed, we should like to have it marked down in the Bible, that we might learn the mathemat ics of prayer. Would’ you have it record ed that, if a thing is so many inches long, we may pray about it; but if it happens to be about a quarter of an inch too short, we must let it alone? If we might not pray about little things, it would be a-fear ful calamity; for little things cause us great worry, and they are harder to deal with than great things. If we might not pray about minor matters, it would be a terrible loss of comfort.”
Sure Words of Comfort B y F. J. A tkinson T HE word's of assurance given by the apostle to the Church at Thessalo- nica concerning the safety of their com panions who had died in the Lord, is also full of blessed meaning and comfort to us. Many of us who have laid the bodies of our loved ones in the cold grave have felt a sense of loneliness and grief for which nothing on earth could compen sate. But those who believe on Jesus the risen Lord of life, sorrow, yet not without hope, because we know that as surely as He rose again from the 'dead, He will one day come again, and then will bring all them that sleep in Jesus with Him. And we that are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds; so shall we be forever with the Lord (1 Thess. 4; 1 Cor. 15). The Christians of those early days wished their loved ones “Good night” when their spirits were called away, be cause they believed that they would meet again on the glorious morning of their Lord’s return. “We know,” the apostle declares “by the word of the Lord," that those who die in the Lord are only await ing “the resurrection of the just.” We know also by the fact of otir Lord’s own resurrection from the dead—for if we be lieve that Jesus died and- rose again—and we do believe that which is beyond dis pute—-we are also as certain of that glo rious reunion with those we love, who have passed on before us. ’“For now is “Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.” His resurrection is the earnest and pledge of their and our resurrection too. The apostle’s desire to depart and be with Christ was because he was fully as sured’ that death would bring his spirit into the presence of his Lord and Saviour, for without this assurance he would more gladly have remained with those he loved bn earth (Phil. 1 :21). He was fully per suaded that to be “absent from the body” was to be “present with the Lord” (2 Cor. S). We also have known very many believ ing ones who have passed through the portals of the grave in possession of a joyous certainty of hope that has trans formed the chamber of death into a house of God, because they have known an ex perience of gladness beyond anything they have ever had in the ordinary walks of life. Some have almost seen the heavenly glories as the final moment has arrived, and their last words have been—“Thanks be unto God who giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." Trusting I in their “God' who cannot lie” they have
