ACCEPTING THE MENTALLY-ILL PERSON

or not a mentally-ill person can be rehabilitated. The psychiatrist, the psychologist, the clinic, the mental hospital can diagnose, treat, cure and discharge the patient. Whether or not that person can remain well depends on whether he is whole heartedly accepted back in his com munity by his family, his church, friends, neighbors, work associates, and the other people in his every day life. I would suggest that you and your husband have a talk with someone on the staff of the hospi tal. They will gladly give you ad vice as to how you can best help this patient, your mother. And you can be sure that the Lord will bless your efforts, for He has told us to honor our parents and has prom ised a special blessing to those who do. NEW WOMAN Q. After reading some of your books and hearing your broadcast, Psy chology for Living, I started to ana lyze myself and what I discovered was amazing. I had spent most of my life pushing back any desires that a woman would have because I felt that I did not look very fem i nine. Though I have been a Chris tian for several years, I had guilt that I couldn't understand. My hid den desire to be a real woman was the cause of it. Do you know what I have done? I’ve lost nearly forty pounds, have let my hair grow to a becoming length so that I can have a nice hairdo, and have finally been able to buy some pretty clothes that look well on the “ new me.” And I’m not tired anymore. Am I right in believing that one’s inner feelings THE KING’S BUSINESS

Q. My mother, an attractive woman in her early 50’s — a widow — has been hospitalized for some months in a State hospital. This was our first contact as a family with such a situation and none of us was pre pared for it. We don’t know what to do or to say when we visit Mother, and soon she will be released and will be coming to live with my hus band and me. We want to do the very best we can for her. Can you give us some information and a few guide lines that will help us to help her? A. I greatly appreciate this letter and let me say that your mother is one of the fortunate ones: she is receiving the professional help and treatment that she needed. Now she can look forward to coming home to a family who wants to do the best for her. The most important thing to do is to realize that mental illness is truly an illness. Those who are mentally ill are people like the rest of us — people who are troubled, unhappy and who need help. The mentally ill may say and do things that outrage the normal person, but they say and do these things be cause they are sick. Most people are able to accept this fact, but far too many of us, when face-to- face with someone in our own fami ly circle who is now or has once been mentally ill, react with super stitious fear rather than with a ra tional understanding of the medical problem involved. The attitude of the individual citizen is perhaps the most impor tant factor in determining whether

to give gospels to the scriptureless millions?
