WHAT’S GOING ON AROUND JAMAICA?

WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIER Tuesday, June 19–Tuesday, June 26 Kingston

REGGAE SUMFEST Sunday, July 15–Saturday, July 21 Montego Bay

This year, the Chess Championship Subzonals, a part of the World Chess Championship Qualifiers, are coming to Jamaica for the first time ever. Chess players from around the region will be coming to Jamaica in order to qualify for the next round of global competition. It’s high stakes mixed with good fun. The weeklong event takes place at the Knutsford Court Hotel in Kingston, and visitors are welcome to attend and watch as these professional players take centre stage. Visit Jamchess.com for more information.

July is very much a month of reggae across Jamaica. July 1 is International Reggae Day, a celebration of all things reggae. Then, two weeks later, the 25th annual Reggae Sumfest kicks off in Montego Bay. It’s a week of music and culture, with local artists performing every day of the event. As Jamaica’s biggest music festival, it’s high- energy and authentic. For more information about Reggae Sumfest, see Reggaesumfest.com .
