After a riding accident, Claire Skerman wondered if she’d get back in the saddle but she’s aiming high with her off the track thoroughbred, O’Tauto. Claire Skerman had just returned to work after more than a year of rehabilitation when she first met the then three-year- old gelding, O’Tauto. Claire was working as a strapper for Greg Eurell’s stables in Cranbourne and was given the job of accompanying O’Tauto to his first day at the races. “It was at the Cranbourne track and he won and that was the beginning of it all. I’d just returned to work after a serious accident and I was putting my faith in a horse to help me through that challenge – and O’Tauto is definitely that horse,” recalled Skerman. Today, four years after they first met, Skerman is the very pleased and proud owner of O’Tauto, who retired early last year. The Off The Track horse has been a pivotal part of her recovery from injuries that left her wondering if she’d be able to ride again. In August 2017, Skerman fell from her sister’s horse and broke her back. Major spinal surgery and rehabilitation followed. She spent three months in a wheelchair and had to learn to walk – and ride – again. “My younger sister had an Off The Tracker and she had a fall from him and broke her ankle so I offered to keep her horse in work for her. Within about three rides he’d thrown me off, too. As a rider you have falls all the time, but I knew this one was different because, for the first time, I fell and I couldn’t get up. But I had no idea it would be 12 months before I’d ride again,” said Skerman. She was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital and when she realised the extent of her injuries, Skerman had one question on her mind. Would she be able to ride again? BUILDING A BEAUTIFUL PARTNERSHIP BY SARAH MARINOS

“The specialist said he thought I would ride but it would take at least 12 months and that became the driving factor in my recovery – I wanted to make that happen,” said Skerman. “People commented about how positive I was during my recovery and when I was in the wheelchair and then the back brace. I just felt so lucky that I was going to walk and ride again, even if it took time and pain. I counted down every day of that 12 months.” When Skerman was strong enough to get back in the saddle, she invited family and close friends to see her ride her Clydesdale- cross, Falcon, for the first time. “That morning I was so excited but I was also terrified that I’d land in the saddle and feel I didn’t belong there anymore. If I couldn’t ride anymore, I didn’t know what I would do with my life. My whole life has been horses and so it was a huge relief to get in the saddle and it feel like home.”
7
#LOVETHEHORSE
Skerman doesn’t come from a racing family. She grew up watching The Saddle Club and joined her local pony club in Nunawading when she was six years old. She went to monthly rallies where she could ride other people’s ponies until she got her own horse a year or two later. “I did quite well in VCE and started an arts degree but I was there for three weeks and knew it wasn’t for me. I deferred and began working as a stable hand instead and I fell in love with racing and never went back to uni,” said Skerman. Skerman credits Equine Pathways Australia with helping her make her successful return to riding and racing after her accident. The organisation helps people with disability engage in equine sports and activities and Skerman had classes with Equine Pathways Australia to help her gain confidence and strength in the saddle. “Equine Pathways has been life changing for me. Having clinics each month helped me set goals and work towards them. I still ride there and have worked with sport psychologists, physiotherapists and riding instructors. There is a whole community of people there who support each other,” said Skerman. After joining Greg Eurell’s stables and meeting O’Tauto, Skerman continued to achieve milestones in her recovery and career. In January 2019, she strapped O’Tauto for his first win at Flemington. “I went through a rollercoaster of emotions that day. It was an important moment in my recovery because it brought home the realisation that I had recovered – I’d not only learned to walk again but I’d strapped a winner at Flemington and I was doing what I loved doing the most in working with racehorses,” said Skerman.
“I looked back on my time in hospital and that long 12 months and now I was where I wanted to be. I was in tears when
8
O’Tauto crossed the finishing line first. I felt like I’d strapped the Melbourne Cup winner.”
Skerman is now Assistant Trainer at Julius Sandhu Racing and helps manage the horses and stable operations. She’s also finished an Equine Veterinary Nurse course so can look after medications, treatments and any injuries, too. While she doesn’t ride trackwork anymore, away from work Skerman is dedicating her time to training O’Tauto to compete in dressage events. “When I first got him, I gave him a long spell and a chance to relax and be a horse again out in the field. I’ve just started introducing him to his new career. We have a partnership on the ground and now we are building that under saddle and O’Tauto is showing huge potential because he moves so well,” said Skerman. “Dressage is an unspoken language. You ask the horse to do incredible movements using your own body and when you get that right, and when you have that level of communication and harmony with your horse, it’s a very special feeling.” WINNING STRAPPERS REWARDED FOR THEIR DEDICATION It’s Christmas in July for strappers at Flemington on VRC Members Race Day, with every winning strapper receiving a TCL 40” Full HD Android TV valued at $499. With the help of TCL, the VRC will offer nine TCL TVs for strappers to celebrate the end of the racing season. The Club is proud to support strappers, who are the backbone of the industry. The VRC are pleased to be able to reward them for all the care and attention that they give to the equine athletes of our sport.

FEATURE STORY
THE BYERLEY HANDICAP
The Byerley name has a hallowed place in international thoroughbred history. The Victoria Racing Club honours it today with the running of The Byerley Handicap over 1800 metres. The Byerley Handicap has become a coveted event for owners and trainers with hearts set on the great spring classics at Flemington – the time-honoured Kennedy Oaks for fillies and the Penfolds Victoria Derby. The Melbourne Cup Carnival is not so far away. The winner of The Byerley Handicap is guaranteed ballot exemption to run in the Derby or the Oaks. It is a big incentive for trainers to set their horses for today’s race, and it gives racegoers a preview of the rising generation of stayers. In 2020, for example, Johnny Get Angry ran the Byerley winner Alycone to within a length, and he ended up memorably winning the Victoria Derby for owner-trainer Denis Pagan. This is a much anticipated end-of-season distance race for our two-year-olds. As July and the Australian racing season of 2021–22 near their conclusion, The Byerley Handicap is the ideal testing ground and preparation for the rising generation of stayers. Horses in this race will soon turn three years old, for 1 August is the horses’ birthday for every horse born in the Southern Hemisphere. And the Penfolds Victoria Derby and the Kennedy Oaks over 2500 metres are the three-year-old classics. The VRC introduced the 1800 Byerley Handicap to the July calendar back in 2017 as a logical stepping stone for young horses looking for longer distances in their racing. The story of the Byerley Turk has been told many times, many places. This dark brown horse, foaled in Europe more than 330 years ago, is regarded as one of the three male progenitors of the modern thoroughbred, in company with the Darley Arabian and the Godolphin Arabian.
10
He was both a war horse and a racehorse. The tale is that he was captured by Englishman, Captain Robert Byerley (1660– 1714), when the so-called Holy League was besieging the Turks at Buda in Hungary in 1686. Some historians discount this part of the story but don’t dispute that Captain Byerley rode the horse as a charger in the 1690 Battle of the Boyne in Ireland, and that he won a race the same year in Northern Ireland. The Byerley Turk later stood at stud in Yorkshire. His dominant ‘male line’ descendants included Herod (1758), sire of the unbeaten Highflyer (1774). This line of succession led to some of the earliest thoroughbred stallions and mares to make their mark in Australia, including through the British sire Rockingham (1781) and his descendants. And The Byerley is a name that Victoria Racing Club members now associate with the finest of dining in the Club Stand at Flemington. The VRC proudly speaks of luxury, service and style at The Byerley restaurant with its sweeping views over the home straight. Whichever way you look at it, the Byerley name speaks of enduring thoroughbred quality.

THE FLEMINGTON CUP 1849 BY ANDREW LEMON
When was ‘Flemington’ not ‘Flemington’? This year, for the third time, the Victoria Racing Club is proudly presenting a 2000 metre race for three-year-olds and upwards with the curious name “The Flemington Cup 1849”. It honours a piece of racing history almost as old as the racecourse itself. There is a unique Australian-made, two-handled silver cup in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Victoria. It is inscribed as “The Flemington Cup”. It stands 17.6 centimetres tall. It was the trophy for an 1849 race won by a thoroughbred named Belzoni. It has special significance as the oldest known racing trophy awarded in Victoria. The silversmith was Charles Brentani, a young Italian jeweller who worked in Collins Street, Melbourne from 1845 until just before his death in 1853. The cup is the only example of his craftsmanship held by the NGV.
The inscription clearly reads:
FLEMINGTON CUP Presented by Mr. James Dunbar
and run for on the Melbourne Race Course on the 15th Jan[uary] 1849. Won by Belzoni beating 5 Others. The Property of James E. Crook. Ridden by Mr R Lovelock. There is a riddle surrounding this trophy. Flemington Racecourse, as we know it, hosted its first race meeting in March 1840, but in its first fifteen years or more the place was simply called “The Melbourne Race Course”. So how do we explain a big race held here as early as 1849 and called “The Flemington Cup”? The locality name of “Flemington” originally referred to a small cluster of houses and buildings around today’s Mount

Alexander Road and Debney’s Paddock near the bridge over the Moonee Ponds Creek. High on the hill above was landowner James Watson’s homestead Flemington House, later rebuilt into a great mansion by pastoralist Hugh Glass. Watson, the first colonial owner of the property (but not of the racecourse, which remained Crown Land) had called his whole estate Flemington in honour of the Scottish birthplace of his wife, Elizabeth Rose. Travellers by road from the city centre to “The Melbourne Race Course” had to pass this way. It made sense for Watson to build a hotel just over the bridge, advertised at the time of opening as “Half Way to the Race Course”. The first landlord of the Flemington Inn was a brawny young Scot, James Dunbar. He marked the opening of the hotel in April 1848 with a couple of horse races in the adjacent paddocks. The feature event was a hurdle race – the winner receiving “a first rate saddle and bridle”.

FEATURE STORY
By the following summer, Dunbar was planning a much grander event. The occasion was “Auld Hansel’s Monday”, a traditional Scottish mid-January holiday. There were plenty of precedents for holiday race meetings organised by publicans, such as at seaside Brighton on Boxing Day or St Kilda on New Year’s Day. Dunbar evidently arranged to conduct his meeting not at the Flemington Inn but at the Melbourne Race Course. He commissioned the silver cup as a trophy for the main race. Its stated value of 15 guineas represented several weeks’ wages for the average labourer. Newspaper accounts of the meeting were sparse in detail, but it is now clear that this Flemington Cup 1849 was indeed contested not at the hotel but at the Melbourne Race Course. There are references to specific details of the course such as “the hill” and “the distance”. The race was a mile and a half (2414m) – but run in heats, as was often the custom at that time. To win the Flemington Cup, Belzoni had to defeat his opponents twice in the same afternoon. He won the first heat by several lengths, the second by a nose. Poor Dunbar was left seriously out of pocket when the local magistrates refused his application for a liquor licence at the racecourse: his potential profit evaporated. Indeed his time as a publican was brief. He became insolvent the following year. It fell to others to arrange a second attempt at Auld Hansel’s Monday races in 1850. These were again scheduled for the Melbourne Race Course but, by a twist of fate, heavy rain partly flooded the track. The races were run instead on a course set in the grounds of the Flemington Inn – but this time the “Flemington Cup” was replaced by a “Farmer’s Cup”. Over the next four years, Dunbar’s successors at the Inn ran occasional race meetings at what they specifically called “The Flemington Racecourse” but which wasn’t “The Melbourne Race Course”. Only in the later 1850s did the name migrate. So by a quirk of fate “The Flemington Cup 1849” and its silver trophy turned out to be part of historic Flemington Racecourse story after all.
