Stora Enso To Increase Stake In Inpac Packaging To 90% Stora Enso announced it would increase the owner- ship in its subsidiary Inpac Packaging in China. The company currently holds a majority stake of 51 per- cent and plans to raise it to reach 90 percent. Stora Enso puts the purchase price at approximately € 46m. The transaction is subject to approval by Chinese authorities and is expected to be finalized during the first quarter of the year. Stora Enso Inpac offers fibre-based packaging solu- tions with design, production, sales and R&D ser- vices. The company has production units in Qian’an, Dongguan and Jiashan in China with a workforce of 2,400 and serves global and local brand owners. In June last year, Stora Enso parted with an Inpac plant in Chennai in India and exited the Indian packaging market. The Chennai plant used to produce transport and consumer packaging made out of corrugated board. Workflow Tools For Packaging Continue To Expand InfoTrends has completed its market research study entitled The Future of Digital Packaging Workflows , whose focus is the global packaging market’s use of software tools to enhance production of all printed packaging. Taking into account all relevant software seg- ments, global sales of workflow software for pack- aging topped $1 billion worldwide in 2015, and that total is climbing steadily in all regions, according to InfoTrends. “There’s a lot going on in terms of workflow for packaging,” said Robert Leahey, Associate Director at InfoTrends and a senior advisor for the new research, “and a big future for tools that enhance it.” As evidence, he cited the trend among brands in all regions to order packaging more frequently and in smaller amounts, to customize marketing and make operations more efficient, in turn making workflow more challenging. Protective Packaging To Continue Strong Growth A new report from market research firmThe Freedo- nia Group predicts demand for protective packaging in the United States is forecast to expand 4.9 percent per year to $6.8 billion in 2019, bolstered by strong gains in Internet shopping. According to Protective Packaging, as consumers purchase more products on- line, demand will increase for packaging that can pro- tect these goods from shock, vibration, abrasion, and other damaging effects of shipping and handling. The study says environmental concerns will bring about a number of changes for protective packaging. Rigid protective packaging products are expected to post healthy gains as molded pulp and paperboard protectors both benefit from a less variable pricing structure and trends toward sustainability.

Active, Intelligent Packaging To Surge

Demand for active and intelligent packaging in the United States is forecast to expand 7.3 percent annu- ally to $4.0 billion in 2019, well above the packaging industry average, according to a new a report from Freedonia. Active packaging provides functions beyond prod- uct protection and identification, such as moisture control; intelligent packaging incorporates features that indicate status or communicate product changes and other information. While many active and intelli- gent packaging products, such as packaged desic- cants and volatile corrosion inhibitors, have a well established presence, emerging products include an- timicrobial packaging, advanced time-temperature monitors, and smartphone-enabled interactive pack- aging products. All of these products are expected to see further development over the next decade as food safety concerns and interest in product connec- tivity create a need for products that can more effi- ciently perform related functions. Intelligent packaging demand will see the faster growth, advancing at a double-digit rate and reaching $1.5 billion in 2019 as products such as time-temper- ature indicators and smart labels and tags become more common, according to the report. Active packaging demand is forecast to grow 5.4 percent per year to $2.5 billion in 2019.
