Packaging Trends (Cont’d from Page 1)

Trend 3 : The unboxing moment matters The survey found that awareness of ‘unboxing’ is rising in many markets. In Poland, for example, in 2019, 32 percent of consumers had heard of ‘un- boxing’, compared to 66 percent this year. In 2021, 46 percent of those surveyed said that a unique unboxing experience inspired by standout product packaging due to packaging would convince them to order from the same retailer again. This year, that has risen to 78 percent. Trend 4 : Consumers are increasingly willing to pay a premium for packaging that meets their needs Consumers say they are increasingly willing to pay around $1 extra for packaging that best suits their needs. Willingness to pay for best-fit packaging rose from 48 percent in Poland in 2021 to 81 percent this year and from 56 percent in 2021 in Germany to 70 percent in 2022. Overall in the five markets, 72 per- cent of consumers are willing to pay for packaging, with Generation Z (80 percent) and Millennials (74 percent) being the most likely to agree. Trend 5 : The behavior and trends of Millennials are driving the market These are customers who are shopping online

The survey confirms that across generations and countries, the top drivers for online shopping are lower prices and convenience, specifically saving time and direct delivery to homes. The five key trends found in the report are: Trend 1 : Protection of goods and environmental considerations continue to be two of the strongest customer requirements Nearly 95 percent of consumers cite protection of goods as their most important factor, especial- ly when it is a product of value. This is followed by ease of closing for returns, which has increased from 74 percent in 2019 to 88 percent this year. Packaging being environmentally friendly (84 percent) and easy to dispose of (80 percent) were the next most important factors. Trend 2 : Overpackaging is costing more than ex- pected Oversized packaging annoys 86 percent of consum- ers, up from 79 percent in 2021, and excess internal packaging annoys 78 percent of customers. In fact, more than two-thirds (67 percent) of respondents across the five countries said that overpackaging would deter customers from buying from the brand.

Sustainable Report (Cont’d from Page 1)

“The jump from last year’s bronze medal to this year’s silver medal demonstrates that we are on track with our sustainability strategy,” according to Dr. Stefan König, Managing Director at Optima. Since May 2022, Optima’s company-wide sustain- ability strategy “We care for tomorrow” has consisted of three pillars: circular packaging, sustainable tech- nology and corporate sustainability. This means that Optima is targeting packaging solutions for a circu- lar economy along with resource-saving production processes developed in partnership with customers. In addition, past activities are integrated into a com- prehensive environmental and climate strategy. Spe- cific goals for the next few years have been set as well as aspirations in the areas of social responsibil- ity and sustainable corporate governance. EcoVadis’s regular assessment means that optimi- zation processes can be identified at an early stage. The silver medal’s status will remain effective for twelve months and then be re-evaluated. The EcoVadis rating agency was founded in 2007 and has become the world’s leading provider of sustainability ratings, with an international network of over 100,000 rated companies. The rating meth- odology is based on international sustainability standards such as the Global Reporting Initiative, the United Nations Global Compact and ISO 26000.

try activities like HolyGrail 2.0, CELAB, Petcore and RecyClass. “When we speak about sustainability, I like to look at metrics and concrete progresses, and our first sustainability report identifies a significant re- duction of greenhouse gas emissions versus 2020,” said Gabriela Neves Ferri, Vice President of Global R&D and Sustainability at All4Labels. “By promot- ing and investing in green energy we were able to decarbonize our global operations by 22,199.42 t C02e, while we are also introducing more and more equipment manufactured C02 neutral.” OPTIMA Awarded Silver Medal From EcoVadis The EcoVadis rating agency has awarded Optima a silver medal for its core sustainability strategy “We care for tomorrow”. This places the Optima Group in the top 25 per- cent of the companies rated by EcoVadis. The areas assessed were the environment, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement. Optima’s sustainability strategy is assessed annu- ally by EcoVadis to identify new potential initiatives and promote existing activities.

FINAT Announces 2022 Sustainability Awards

FINAT announced the winners of its 2022 Sus- tainability Awards during a ceremony at the FINAT Technical Seminar 2022 held in Barcelona, Spain, on November 23. This year five initiatives were en- tered in the competition, covering innovative pa- per-based labels, renewable energy generation, decorations optimized for environmental impact, and compostable flexible packaging. The jury judged the submitted data for its demon- stration of improved environmental and social im- pact, achievements, relevance, cooperation along the value chain and overall uniqueness. The Jury decided to award two initiatives among the received ones, in the categories of Converter Small & Medium, and Converter Large. Securikett Ulrich & Horn won in the category of Converter Small & Medium with its entry IT’S PAPER series – VOID Labels and VOID Tapes. The initiative was prized by the jury for incorporating renewable content, contributing to the recyclabili- ty of packaging including security features, and for providing a unique solution that replaces film with fibre-based materials. All4Labels Group won in the Converter Large category with its initiative Starshine. The jury cited the reduced environmental impact of the products, including a reduction of use of hazardous materials, reduced energy consumption and the elimination of plastic filmic materials required for the process. The initiative is the result of cooperation within the organization, from R&D and sustainability to mar- keting and sales. More than 200 members of AICC Mexico met No- vember 15-17 in Guadalajara, Mexico, for the 2022 AICC Mexico Annual Meeting and Trade Fair. The three-day event offered educational seminars, general session presentations, and a trade fair fea- turing 37 suppliers of corrugated machinery, equip- ment, and services. Also on the agenda was a tour of Cartographic, a corrugated and folding carton operation in the nearby town of El Salto. The meeting began on Tuesday, November 15, with a daylong seminar, “Packaging Design Work- flow Process Mapping,” by Andrew Hurley, a pro- fessor of packaging science at Clemson University in Clemson, S.C. The five-hour session looked at a seven-step process of design for customer-focused, sustainable packaging. Working in teams, the 52 at- tendees created hypothetical products, developed and assembled packaging design prototypes, and then presented them to the group. The meeting continued on Wednesday, November 16, with general session presentations from several industry and business-management speakers. AICC Mexico President Sergio Menchaca, CEO of EKO Empaques, opened the session and welcomed at- tendees. Noting the growth of AICC Mexico in the past two years, he reported that the Association has 75 member companies, up from 40 in 2019. He then welcomed AICC President Mike D’Ange- lo, who reported on activities at AICC International and urged members of AICC Mexico to participate in the Association’s Spanish-language training pro- grams and free online courses. Jana Harris, CEO of Harris Packaging and American Carton in the Dal- las-Fort Worth metro area and Chairman of AICC, also gave welcoming remarks, noting the need for more education about our industry in colleges, uni- versities, and trade schools. The featured industry speaker of the morning was Mark Wilde, Senior Paper & Packaging Analyst with BMO Capital in New York, who gave an overview of the containerboard and corrugated markets in North America. He noted the recent months’ de- cline in box demand and the softening container- board markets as a result and predicted that the major producers will soon be announcing closure of older mill assets, adding that new capacity com- ing onstream in 2023 will also put downward pres- sure on paper prices. Pledges to Reduce Plastic Pollution Have Small Impact Corporate pledges to lower plastic pollution are not translating into lower plastic pollution, accord- ing to a new study from Research and Markets. Ac- cording to the research, done by a U.S.-based team of researchers, voluntary commitments made by the world’s biggest companies emphasize plastic recy- cling over lowering plastic production. While recycling is considered an important part of a circular economy, 80 percent of a product’s en- vironmental impacts are determined when it’s be- ing designed. As of 2015, only nine percent of the world’s plastic was recycled. Most went to landfill, while 12 percent was incinerated, venting green- house gases into the atmosphere. Roughly 11 million tons of plastic flows into the ocean each year, and this number is expected to almost double by 2040. TLMI Commits Sustainability Resources For Members TLMI has announced that two of the association’s Sustainability Committee’s subcommittees have launched interactive maps that show the locations of recyclers and waste disposal sites for liner and matrix materials. The release liner subcommittee has launched a map that indicates paper and PET release liner re- cyclers across the United States and Canada and the matrix subcommittee has launched a map indicat- ing matrix waste byproduct disposal sites. Critical Resources The subcommittees’ goals in making these inter- active maps available to association members is to offer companies critical resources as they develop and carry out their own sustainability initiatives. TLMI started providing association members with sustainability resources that included recyclers and non-landfill matrix disposal sites a decade ago in the association’s Recycling Handbook. The publishing of the handbook was one of the central initiatives of the association’s Sustainability Committee to ensure members had resources avail- able as they began their sustainability journeys and looked for ways to recycle liner waste and to keep matrix byproducts out of landfills. The liner recycling and matrix disposal maps will be available on TLMI’s website in early January 2023.

cago on August 21, 1932, the year his father found- ed the Weber Addressing Machine company. He grew up in Prospect Heights and graduated from Arlington Heights High School. Weber then went on to attend Drake University where he graduated with a B.A. Degree. After that, Weber went on to pursue a degree in law from Northwestern Univer- sity Law and graduated in 1954. Law Practice After passing the bar exam, Weber practiced law for two years defending personal injury and work- man’s compensation cases for insurance compa- nies. After those years of civil defense work, Weber joined the Cook County State’s Attorney where he worked for three years. In 1962 he left the practice of law and joined the Weber Addressing Machine Company, located in Mount Prospect, Illinois. Guiding A Company In 1980, Weber was named President and CEO of the company, now named Weber Marking Sys- tems. Under his leadership the company received many awards, including being named one of the top 10 manufacturing companies in the country.
