2022 Annual Report - El Paso Police Department

El Paso Police Department

Law enforcement is a unique endeavor, some would say it is a profession, while those who do the work would say it is a calling. I would argue that there are few undertakings so noble as the protection of your community. It is defined by service and attracts those who truly believe they can make a difference. There are those who question why anyone would ever go into the field of law enforcement. For those of us involved, we could not imagine doing anything else. There are many who enter into this profession and serve with distinction while there are a select few who soar above the rest. Sgt. Santos “Sonny” Perez is the perfect example he loved his profession and could not imagine himself doing anything else. From the early part of his career as a patrol officer to his exemplary work as a K9 Officer, Sgt. Santos Perez had a passion for his career and loved being able to be there for his community and fellow officers. Sgt. Santos Perez graduated from the 86th Academy Class. Police Academy on August 13th, 1993. Sgt. Santos Perez started his career working patrol at Central Regional Command Center and went on to become a city wide K9 Officer handler. Sgt. Santos Perez was the K9 Instructor for several years and was one of his passions, to teach the younger generation of officers and to bring camaraderie among his peers. Sgt. Santos Perez went on to pass a promotional exam and obtained his final goal of promoting to Sergeant before his retirement. Sonny Perez, age 52, entered into eternal rest on Friday, December 2, 2022 in El Paso, Texas Santos Perez. He was more than officer, he was a wonderful son, brother, father, grandfather, and husband. Santos is preceded in death by his loving parents; Rafael Perez and Dora Garcia. He is survived by his loving wife; Detective Daisy Perez; his dearest children; Addison Marie Perez, Jose Raphael Perez and Vivian McKenzie Perez; his brother; Gilbert Flores; and his wonderful grandson. He is also survived by many extended friends and family whom cherish and honor his memory. On a personal level he was a musician, comedian, and most importantly a friend to many. Even as he went through difficult times in his own life, he made the time to check up on others and let others know that everything will be alright. He is greatly missed.
