mission

We are a non-profit organization that builds and delivers new bicycles to at-risk and foster children in our community. We primarily raise our funds through our annual city-wide bike ride, called the Winter Wonder Ride. onbikes was formed in 2011 when a group of friends organized a community bike ride during the winter holiday season to raise funds so at-risk kids could receive their very first bike. It was an incredible success, and it was then that onbikes was born. At onbikes we are simply doing our part in restoring the self-confidence, health, and overall well- being of at-risk kids in our community. We’ve seen the expression on their faces when they receive a bike. It might sound simple, but something so small as a bike makes a very real difference in the world of a child. You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy a kid a bike, and that’s pretty close.

why bikes? Bikes give kids their first real opportunity to experience freedom. Bikes teach independence while providing a fun, safe, and physical activity. Riding a bike is one of the most grown up things a kid can do, as they learn to operate on their own. There’s a special bond between kids and bikes that can never be broken. Riding a bike is a rite of passage, a chance to explore. Bikes represent fun, freedom, and fresh air – everything that’s good about being a kid. Benefits of Bike Riding From a Child Development Standpoint There are few activities better than riding a bike when it comes to developing balance, joint strength, and a sense of community. Health & Wellness Biking is one of the healthiest pastimes that kids pick up and almost never outgrow. Here are some of the other benefits of cycling: • Develops strength, balance, and overall fitness • Raises metabolic rate and burns calories • Strengthens heart, lungs, and lower-body muscles and bones • Develops and strengthens the muscles surrounding the knees without impact Community Bicycling can bridge generations, bring families together, and foster new relationships. Social acceptance and emotional health are key in creating a positive sense of self. Having the option to ride a bicycle with peers and family members creates a sense of belonging that is critical in every child’s development.

how we work

Selecting Partners We work to create meaningful partnerships with organizations that support our mission. There are many ways to collaborate with onbikes. Event participation, sponsorship, volunteering, or hosting a Corporate Bike Build (see page 11) are just a few ways to get involved. Raising Funds With the support of our partners, onbikes works to raise funds through the Winter Wonder Ride; Corporate Bike Builds and by developing additional strategic fundraising campaigns throughout the year. These funds go towards the purchase of brand new bicycles and helmets for at-risk and foster kids. Needs Assessment We work with local governments, in particular, police and fire departments as well as our network of community partners to determine the number of bikes and helmets needed and where they will go. Over 397,122 kids are living without permanent families. Most foster homes are without the resources to provide recreational activities. This is where onbikes comes in. Since 2011, onbikes has built and donated over 3,500 bicycles to children in need. We work along side city officials, family service organizations, corporate and community partners to raise funds to make our mission of bringing bicycles to kids a reality. Here’s how we do it…

how we work (cont.)

The Build Hundreds of volunteers and partners gather to assemble the bikes. The community comes together for a day of fun and goodwill as each bike is built piece by piece. Quality assurance is provided by on-site bike technicians to guarantee each child receives a safe set of wheels. The Ride Thousands join us for the Winter Wonder Ride to celebrate our cause and our community’s tireless effort to put bikes and helmets in the hands of children in need. The Delivery Just in time for the holiday season, the bikes and helmets are delivered! Everyone remembers the day they got their first bike. We at onbikes, alongside our loyal supporters, create that moment for hundreds of underprivileged children in the community. Because every kid deserves a bike.

corporate builds onbikes partners with companies across the nation in order to put more bikes in the hands of at-risk kids. We have devised a unique model that allows each company to host an unforgettable team-building event while also giving back to the community. The team at onbikes will work with your staff to plan and execute a special day of employee volunteerism as they build bikes by hand and put smiles on the faces of children in need. How it works: Step 1: Determine your preferred date, time, venue and number of participants. Whether this is a stand-alone event or an added activity to a larger conference or retreat, onbikes will work to customize the experience to your needs. Step 2: The onbikes team will determine the number of bikes needed based on your space, time frame and participant count, and will present you with a cost analysis. Step 3: Confirm budget, date, time, location and invite your employees! onbikes will take care of ordering/shipping of the parts and supplying the necessary tools. Step 4: The build! The onbikes team can share ideas on making this event both fun and productive for your attendees. Whether you elect to create competitions or simply build as a group, this exercise is an effective and fun team-builder. onbikes and the technicians we partner with will be on-site to facilitate the build and to perform quality control. Step 5: The best part! Give the bikes to children in need and see the happiness that you and your team have created. You can give the bikes to an organization of your choosing, or we at onbikes can help facilitate the give-away through our network of partners.
