REGARD FOR MISSIONARIES The present a ttitu d e of th e Chinese government tow ards m issions can he well illu strate d by th e fact th a t It would not allow th e coolies, of whom th ere are some 300,000 a t work in France, to go for service unless they were under th e oversight of m ission­ aries,— sure pledge of fair play and good treatm en t. A colonel in charge of th e Chinese Labor Corps w rites: “We w an t as many m issionaries as we can get. They are almost th e only Europeans who have any adequate knowledge of th e Chinese people and language. They are th e backbone of th e Chinese Labor Corps and we could not get along w ithout them .” SHAILER MATTHEWS’ ORTHODOXY The “Bible Champion” says, “The University of Chicago publishes the “ Biblical W orld” of which Dean Shailer Matthews is th e editor. In an editorial May, 1918, he said, “The theology of the K aiser is th e theology of orthodoxy. The w ar is th e ou tstanding evidence of the bankruptcy of orthodoxy as a moral force among the nations.”
