A ‘Thank You’ for All My Father Taught Me GRATEFUL FOR THE LESSONS

worked with Appalachia Service Project, an organization that assists those who need work done on their homes but are unable to afford it. Each year, my son, Carter, and I team up with a group of people from my sister’s church in Richmond, Virginia, and we drive out to Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, and southern Virginia to help fix or rebuild portions of these individual’s homes. We repair roofs and floors or even add additions to homes. This upcoming year will be our sixth year and Carter, for the first time, will be an adult leader on my team. Even more exciting, my daughter, Cody, will be joining us as a kid on my team. Without all that I learned from my dad, none of this would be possible, and I wouldn’t be able to give back the way that I do now. This month, think of all the great things you have learned from or received from your dad and, if you’re still able to, tell him thank you! Continuing in a moment of gratitude, June 15 is also Worldwide Day of Giving. To me, this is the time to show gratitude for all of the things that we have and to maybe help someone out who doesn’t have those same things. Whether it be paying for someone’s coffee at the local coffee shop, or helping

Last month, we celebrated our mothers. This month, it’s all about Dad!

My father passed away when I was in high school, but in the time that he was with us, he shared so much with me. Here’s just one example of the important skills I learned from him: When my dad bought our house in Edgemere, Maryland, he paid $13,000 for a real fixer- upper. Let me tell you, it was a handyman’s dream! The house was missing some windows, it had porches that were covered with tarps, and it was certainly going to be a lot of work. Needless to say, it wasn’t quite a great family house, but together, we completely renovated and remodeled it. We took down walls, added new ones, put in a spiral staircase, installed a wood-burning stove, and much more. Over the several years it took to complete the job, I learned everything from how to build out a 2x4 wall, how to put up sheetrock, and how to work with plumbing and electrical work. I even became an expert in installing foundations. I’m so grateful for these lessons and time spent with my dad because it allowed me to do so many projects and jobs in my own home now. To take it a step further, I’ve also been able to teach my kids how to repair things. For the last five years, I’ve

someone who has a flat tire on the highway, or just saying “thank you” to people that have helped us either directly or indirectly, we can all do our part. The beauty about having gratitude is that it makes others feel good and in turn, makes us feel even better.

To all the dads out there, happy Father’s Day! Enjoy your day!

How to Travel in Retirement Without Overspending

Summer is here, and the beaches, sunshine, and relaxation are all calling your name! Retirement is the perfect time to travel; after all, free time is much more abundant. However, balancing the desire to travel with the great responsibility of making your money last for the next 30 years or so can be tricky.

Plan your destination. Depending on where you set your sights, travel costs will vary. It’s well known that many cities in Europe, Asia, and even in the United States can be extremely expensive, but there are still amazing places for adventure that don’t break the bank. Mexico, South America, and many areas within the country are significantly less expensive and just as enjoyable. Decide on your travel dates. Just as there are less expensive areas to visit, there are less expensive times of the year to visit each destination — it just requires a little research. The offseason offers special pricing, and many places may even offer senior discounts! Don’t forget to do the same when scouting out airlines and hotels, as prices vary depending on date of travel. With some planning and budgeting, you can enjoy retirement to the fullest without having to worry about overspending! For assistance, at Campbell Wealth Management, we can always help you to develop a plan that accounts for your goals in retirement! Give us a call today.

But, have no fear, because with careful planning, you can still travel to those places on your bucket list without overspending. Here are some budget- friendly travel tips to follow.

Set a budget. In retirement, developing a budget and sticking to it is key. By taking your retirement income and subtracting necessary expenses, you can then determine how much of the

leftover funds you’d like to dedicate to travel. This way, you will know exactly how much you can comfortably spend on airfare, gas, hotels, attractions, and more, as well as how often you can take trips.

3 Easy Cooking Hacks for Better Nutrition

Would you like to be a Campbell Wealth Management Ambassador? Would you like access to exclusive events? No. 2: Replace cream with almond, walnut, or oat milk. Cream is a popular mainstay in any American kitchen, but it doesn’t have to be dairy cream. Plant-based milk and creamer (such as almond, walnut, or oat milk) are often extra rich in vitamins and minerals and low in fat. They contain no cholesterol and are easy on your digestive system. Because they all have slightly different flavor profiles, you can pick your favorite! Walnut milk works surprisingly well in a creamy pasta sauce. Making a meal plan is a pain, but you still want to get all your necessary vitamins, minerals, and protein through everyday foods. Even if you’re not a cooking expert, you can employ a few very simple cooking hacks in the dishes you commonly prepare! You’ll be surprised how these little boosts can reap big, nutritious rewards. No. 1: Add quinoa to recipes. Want to add extra texture or color to your steamed white or brown rice? Mix it up with 1 cup of quinoa (any color) and another 2 cups of water or broth. Or, simply throw quinoa into any grain-friendly soup you’re preparing, like a simple chicken soup! Quinoa is rich in antioxidants and filled with fiber to lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels, reducing your risk of diabetes and heart disease.

No. 3: Add frozen spinach to almost anything. Fresh spinach quickly loses its folate, powerful vitamins, and nutritional benefits over time, but spinach, frozen at its peak freshness, saves the day. That’s why frozen spinach is actually more nutritious than most fresh spinach at the supermarket! Whether it’s for pasta, pizza, scrambled eggs, cheese dip, a smoothie, or curry, frozen spinach is more versatile than you might think. Plus, studies show spinach may have amino acids that help reduce stress and depression! (Bonus) No. 4: Add chia seeds to cold drinks, yogurt, baked desserts, and more! It’s easy to feel guilty for indulging your cravings for sweet tea, pudding, cookies, and cake. But if you add chia seeds, you might feel a little better about it! These small seeds are densely packed with antioxidants, minerals, fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids, all of which may promote heart health, support strong bones, and improve blood sugar management.

We hope these tips help make your favorite dishes a little more fun and guilt-free! Enjoy!

Time for Safe Summer Fun 3 Ways to Protect Your Skin From the Sun

It’s time for fun in the sun! Whether you’re heading out to the beach or lake, catching a ballgame, hosting a barbecue, or taking a boat tour, it’s important to protect your skin to avoid sun damage. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 1 in 5 Americans develops skin cancer by the time they are 70 years old, and every hour, two people die of skin cancer nationally. The risk of skin cancer is severe — it’s not just one sunburn. Having five or more sunburns in your lifetime can double your risk of developing skin cancer.

Seek out the shade. No matter the activity, try to limit your exposure to the sun — you’ll be cooler, too! Look for trees, pavilions, and shelters. When these options aren’t available, create your own shade by wearing a hat and toting along an umbrella. Wear protective clothing. Whenever possible, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants. UV protective clothing is best for maximum protection. Don’t forget about your eyes — UV sunglasses are important for your eyes and the delicate skin around them. Just because sunglasses appear dark does not mean they protect against UV rays!

Here are some surefire ways to avoid a pesky, painful, and potentially harmful sunburn.

Always check: Did you apply (and reapply) sunscreen? Apply sunscreen, and then reapply after going in the water or a few hours later. According to the National Cancer Institute, only about 30% of women and less than 15% of men regularly apply sunscreen, which leaves them vulnerable to the sun’s harmful UV rays. The National Cancer Institute recommends using an SPF of at least 15 and reminds everyone to remember their feet if they are exposed!

This summer, be sure to have fun but don’t forget to protect your skin from sunburns, possible skin cancer, and early signs of aging due to damage from sun exposure! Lather up!
