2025 APEGA Annual Report

Board of Examiners

The Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act establishes APEGA as a regulatory body responsible for the protection of the public interest and for safety within the practices of engineering and geoscience. In this capacity, the Board of Examiners (BOE), consisting of the Registration Committee (RC) and the Registration Executive Committee (REC), has the responsibility of assuring the public that individuals registered as engineers or geoscientists are competent. That is, they have the knowledge, skills, and judgement to practise the profession in a safe, effective, efficient, and independent manner without compromising public safety. The requirements for the credentials to practise consist of four major components that are assessed: (1) demonstration of discipline-specific subject matter (academics); (2) application of knowledge to real-world practice (experience); (3) character; and (4) legal, ethical, and professional knowledge. APEGA’s Registration department staff, the RC, and REC academic and experience examiners continue to perform their duties diligently, focusing on the fundamental principle of public safety and the public’s expectation of high standards. To ensure that the assessment of applicants is valid, consistent, and fair, APEGA staff and the BOE have, over the past several years, embarked on multiple initiatives to improve the standardization of the assessments of the four components. In this regard, academics are reviewed to a discipline-specific syllabus; experience in a framework of competency- based assessment; character through a questionnaire; and legal, ethical, and professional knowledge with a multiple-choice exam. The Policy Working Group continues to develop, review, and update policies and procedures, which enable APEGA registration staff and BOE academic and experience examiners to assess applicant credentials fairly. Two annual, in-person meetings, featuring workshops on standardizing the assessment of academics and experience, aid in ensuring that both are evaluated to an acceptable standard. As public members, we have every confidence that the BOE and the Registration department staff will continue to carry out their responsibilities in an exemplary fashion, focusing on the fundamental principle of public safety and the public’s expectation of high standards. It is our opinion that APEGA is meeting this fundamental principle and maintaining its quality service to the professions and the public as a regulator.
