10. LOON CONSERVATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA Lake Jocassee is an unspoiled ecosystem, with four mountain rivers and dozens of creeks that empty into it. It is also winter home to a population of Common Loons. How does the health and behavior of the loons in this uncontaminated environment compare to those wintering in the Gulf of Mexico, home of the largest offshore oil spill in North American history? The answers will enable researchers to better predict and understand what factors might influence their winter survival.
“Big Sky Country” in northwest Montana is home to over one million acres of wild ruggedness, over 1,000 species of plants, and hundreds of species of animals, including grizzly bears, wolves, cougars, moose, elk, deer, and wolverines. Help scientists to understand how climate change is affecting the availability of huckleberries, a critical food resource for grizzly bears and many other species.
