11. PROTECTING WHOOPING CRANES AND COASTAL HABITATS IN TEXAS

4. FOLLOWING FOREST OWLS IN WESTERN U.S. Within the alpine aspen groves in northern Utah, a suite of small forest owl species—including Flammulated and Northern Saw-Whet Owls—seek out tree cavities for their nests. But climate change threatens to disrupt the routine of these species. Help to measure, photograph, and band forest owls, including nestlings, in this unique habitat and learn about nesting and breeding behaviors and potential climate change impacts to owls and other wildlife. As the tallest bird in North America at a whopping five feet, with a wingspan one-and-a-half times wider, Whooping Cranes are the rarest of the 15 crane species with just over 400 individuals left in the wild migratory population. Join scientists in Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in coastal Texas, winter home for Whooping Cranes, and survey their habitat and foraging patterns to inform protection measures for this vital wetland ecosystem.
