WELCOME TO SKATE AMERICA

We are delighted to welcome you back to Allen, Texas, and 2024 Skate America. As with last year’s event in Allen, we expect big things in the kickoff competition to the 30th ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series. The first of six global stops, Skate America serves as an important competition for many of the top skaters in the world attempting to qualify for the prestigious ISU Grand Prix Final in December. The top six skaters and teams at the conclusion of the series (based on points) will qualify for the Final in Grenoble, France. The Dallas-area figure skating community runs deep, and having World and national champions and medalists take the ice at the Credit Union of Texas Event Center is truly something special. Athletes in the four disciplines — women, men, pairs and Ice dance — are sure to excite everyone with their incredible skill and performance qualities. U.S. World champions Ilia Malinin and the ice dance team of Madison Chock and Evan Bates, and U.S. World silver medalist Isabeau Levito are the event’s domestic headliners. The international field is also loaded, with the likes of 2023 World pairs champions Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara of Japan, and France’s Kevin Aymoz, fourth at the 2023 World Championships and second at 2023 Skate America. With a field of 56 athletes representing 14 countries, you will surely witness unforgettable performances and many dramatic moments. We are glad you are here. Enjoy!

Sincerely,

Samuel Auxier President of U.S. Figure Skating

8 ISU GRAND PRIX SERIES

Texas, a state known for its cattle ranches, barbecue and football, will once again host many of the world’s top figure skaters at Skate America. The competition will kick off the 30th year for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series, which combines six prestigious international compet- itions as a unified point-earning series that awards prize money and points to eligible figure skaters. At the conclusion of the series, athletes’ points are totaled, and the top six point-earners in each discipline earn a spot at the ISU Grand Prix Final, Dec. 5–8, in Grenoble, France. In 2023, the United States secured 11 medals during the six Grand Prix events, including a medal in each discipline at Skate America. At the 2023 Grand Prix Final, Team USA earned two gold medals. 7 THINGS TO WATCH FOR IN ALLEN

THE COMPLETE LIST OF ATHLETE SELECTIONS FOR THE 2024 ISU GRAND PRIX SERIES IS AVAILABLE ON ISU.ORG.

1) World champion Ilia Malinin amazed the skating world the past two seasons at Skate America. In 2022, the Virginia native, at age 17, became the first skater ever to land a quad Axel at a Grand Prix Series event. Last year, he crushed the competition by 30 points with an event record-breaking short program he called “one of the best I’ve had in my career.” What fireworks can we expect this time around from the self-proclaimed quadg0d? 2) Newlyweds and two-time and reigning World ice dance champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates look to clinch their record-tying fifth Skate America title. The Montreal-based team has won eight consecutive competitions, stretching back to the 2022 Grand Prix Final. Should they prevail in Allen, Chock and Bates would tie the Hall of Fame team of Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto for the most Skate America golds. 3) Will the third time be the charm at Skate America for Isabeau Levito? The New Jersey native earned the silver medal at the last two Skate Americas but arrives with momentum as the reigning World silver medalist. She can expect strong competition from the three-deep Japanese team. 4) The top pairs teams from the 2024 U.S. Championships, gold medalists Ellie Kam

and Danny O’Shea, and silver medalists Alisa Efimova and Misha Mitrofanov, look to get off to a fast start in Allen. Their toughest competition figures to come from reigning and two-time World silver medalists Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara of Japan, and Hungary’s Maria Pavlova and Alexei Sviatchenko, who placed fourth at the 2024 World Championships. 5) Like Chock and Bates, ice dancers Leah Neset and Artem Markelov got married in June. The Colorado Springs-based team will make their senior Grand Prix Series debut after winning the U.S. junior title for three consecutive years and the 2024 World Junior title. How they will fare in

Lucas Broussard

Bradie Tennell

Allen is one of the main storylines of the event. 6) Two-time U.S. champion Bradie Tennell plans to mount her Grand Prix comeback at Skate America, after injuries caused her to miss most of last season. The 2018 Olympian would love to cap her career with a second trip to the Games in 2026, and the fight starts here. 7) Seattle’s Lucas Broussard, the 2023 U.S. junior champion, earned his Skate America berth with a victory at the Cran- berry Cup in Boston in August. The Col- orado Springs ice dance team of Isabella Flores and Ivan Desyatov finished fifth at Lake Placid International and was added to the event’s roster. Elyce Lin-Gracey was chosen to fill the final U.S. women's spot, while the last pairs berth went to Katie McBeath and Daniil Parkman. — TROY SCHWINDT

At the conclusion of the six Grand Prix events, athletes’ points are totaled, and the top six point-earners in ladies, men, pairs and ice dancing are invited to compete at the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final (Dec. 5-8, Greno- ble, France). ISU GRAND PRIX OF FIGURE SKATING This season marks the 30th year for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating. The series, launched in 1995, combines six prestigious, international figure skating competitions as a unified point-earning series that awards prize money to eligible figure skaters. SKATER SELECTIONS One of the biggest misconceptions is that each country assigns its own skaters to the six Grand Prix events. Here, we’ve outlined the selection process, used for the first time in 2003. Essentially, there are three different classifications of skaters for the Grand Prix Series. All skaters and ice dance couples may compete in a maxi- mum of two events. 1. Seeded Skaters/Couples: The top six finishers in each discipline from the most recent World Championships will be con- sidered to be seeded and be assigned, by draw, to skate in two events. 2. Invited Skaters/Couples: Skaters or couples who have placed 7–12 in singles or 7–10 in pairs and ice dance at the 2024 World Championships are guaranteed to be selected for two Grand Prix events, provided that these skaters/couples fulfill the requirements of the minimum score. 3. Minimum Score: Each entrant to the Grand Prix events must meet the mini- mum total score (SP/SD + FS/FD) to be included in the entry or the alternate list. For the 2024 Grand Prix season, the mini- mum scores are:

Pairs and Ice Dance 1st place: 15 points 2nd place: 13 points 3rd place: 11 points 4th place: 9 points 5th place: 7 points 6th place: 5 points PRIZE MONEY

In addition to receiving points to qualify for the ISU Grand Prix Final, the top five place-winners in the Grand Prix Series events are awarded prize money. Prize money for all disciplines at Grand Prix Series events is (prize is split between partners in pairs and dance): 1st: $18,000

2nd: $13,000 3rd: $9,000 4th: $3,000 5th: $2,000

1st place: 15 points 2nd place: 13 points 3rd place: 11 points 4th place: 9 points 5th place: 7 points 6th place: 5 points 7th place: 4 points 8th place: 3 points

Grand Prix Final prize money is split between partners in pairs and dance:

1st: $25,000 2nd: $18,000 3rd: $12,000 4th: $6,000 5th: $4,000 6th: $3,000

Mariah and Morgan Bell have been able to turn back the clock in the past two years, sharing their love for skating in a new way.

Mariah, 28, said.

of the sport and be competitive. It’s also a good push for the girls, because you go 30 minutes down the road and there is another rink with more girls trying to compete, so there is always something to challenge them here, which is nice. There are so many rinks, it always keeps you on your toes.” Like last year when Skate America was held in nearby Allen, Texas, a large contin- gent of skaters from NYTEX plan to attend this year’s event. “I think we even had a suite last year,” Morgan said. “They all go as a big group. There was like 15 walking around. We had a few do the sweeper thing. Mariah and I attended a few sessions together, as well.” Unfortunately for Morgan and Mariah, their time together will be coming to an end in December. Mariah is finishing up her sophomore year in college, where she is majoring in communications and minoring in psychology. She will be moving to Cal- ifornia for a year-long internship with the LA 2028 Olympics. She’ll be working in the communications department. After that, she plans to attend UCLA for two years and finish her degree. “I think communications is great for me,” Mariah said. “… I love talking to peo- ple.” “I’m excited for her,” Morgan said. “Of course, selfishly, I want her to stay and con- tinue helping build this program. She’s been a big tool for us.”

“Moving and coming to Dallas was great. I am near my family. I get to be part of skating still and coaching, and to do that with my sister, is such a cool, full-circle thing, because I started skating because of my sister. To be helping her at her rink is wonderful. I always joke, I’ve never lived so close to a rink as I do now. This is the one time in my life when I don’t need to live close to a rink. I walk to the rink; it takes me maybe two minutes. It’s made coaching nice, especially with the early morning stuff — you just wake up and walk to the rink.” Morgan, 33, is the skating director at the facility, which houses two sheets of ice, a pro shop, a restaurant and many other amenities. “It’s been super special,” Morgan said of being able to spend time with her sister and parents after being apart for many years. “To have everybody so close and to have Mariah bring that extra edge to the girls has been special. I think they are super excited about it. When she first came in, they about lost their minds; she always has lesson requests. It’s been fun to work with her. I feel like I’m constantly learning some- thing new, too.” NYTEX Sports, Morgan said, is an inde- pendently owned facility. A few years ago, it was primarily recreational in scope. “Since then, we’ve been able to incor- porate U.S. Figure Skating into it with Learn to Skate USA. We are able to be in that side

For the past two years, sisters Mor- gan and Mariah Bell have woken up each morning in the condo that they share in North Richland Hills, Texas, near Dallas, and walked across the street to the NYTEX Sports complex, where they teach figure skating to hundreds of children, teens and adults. It’s been a family reunion of sorts. Morgan and Mariah spent their childhoods as competitive figure skaters in the Houston area before eventually moving to Denver when they became more serious about the sport. Morgan went on to become a principal skater with Disney on Ice, performing for seven years as Anna in the production of Frozen . Mariah qualified for nine U.S. Figure Skating Championships at the senior level, becoming a U.S. champion and an Olympi- an in 2022; she placed fourth at the 2022 World Championships. Being apart for most of the last de- cade, Mariah jumped at the chance to join Morgan at NYTEX Sports after she retired from competitive skating in October 2022. The Icing on the cake, their parents, Kendra and Andy, live up the street — about a 10-minute walk — from their girls now. “I really have enjoyed these couple of years, because when you retire, even if you feel you have the next step planned out, it’s really a shock to your system because it’s something you’ve done for your whole life,”

No matter what age or skill level you are, there is a program for you. The mission of U.S. Figure Skating is to provide programs to encourage participation and achievement in the sport of figure skating. Check out the opportunities listed here and see how you can get involved in this wonderful activity. Visit www.usfigureskating.org for more information.

LEARN TO SKATE USA Here you are, watching the best of the best at the 2024 Skate America. Maybe you’re even thinking, “I could do that, too.” Well, you definitely can. U.S. Figure Skating has just the program to start you on the road to lifelong fun. Learn to Skate USA® (formerly Basic Skills) was introduced in 1968 to encourage ice skating at all levels and enhance the quality of ice skating techniques. It is designed to be the best beginning ice skating program that meets the needs of both the competi- tive and recreational skater. All skaters, child and adult, recreational and competitive, figure skaters, hockey players and speed skaters, need to learn the basics before branching out into different disciplines. The Learn to Skate USA® program teaches skating from the first steps on the ice. You can continue up the ranks in the program to improve your technique and have fun, or to prepare yourself for a competitive career in ice skating. Getting involved is easy. A number of rinks in your area have Learn to Skate USA programs. If you’re interested in becoming a Learn to Skate USA® member, go to LearnToSkateUSA.com. SYNCHRONIZED SKATING Sixteen skaters on the ice, all gliding and turning, performing elements in uni- son, in the same costumes with exciting themes running throughout — sound cool? It’s synchronized skating, a highly technical form of team skating characterized by speed, accuracy, intricate formations and transitions. In 2023–24, approximately 9,500 synchronized skating athletes on 669 teams were registered with U.S. Figure Skating. Synchronized skating provides figure skaters with the opportunity to participate in a team sport and gives more skaters a chance to compete at sectional and national levels. Teams compete in nonqualifying events as well as qualifying events that culminate with the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships, scheduled Feb. 26–March 1, 2025, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In addition, U.S. Figure Skating annually selects 10 to 15 junior and senior teams, with 20 athletes per team to represent the United States at international competitions, including the ISU World Junior Synchronized Skating Cham- pionships 2025 in Gothenburg, Sweden, March 7–8; and the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships 2025 in Helsinki, Finland, April 4–5.

ADULT SKATING Adult figure skating has shown tremendous growth in recent years. The adult struc- ture allows skaters of various skill levels and ages to continue to test and compete against peers of similar skating abilities. Adults who are new to the sport, as well as those who competed as children, have a place in adult skating competitions. The 2025 Prevagen U.S. Adult Championships are slated for March 31–April 5 in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

MEMORIAL FUND On Feb. 15, 1961, a tragedy shook the figure skating world when Sabena Flight 548, carrying the 1961 U.S. World Team to the World Figure Skating Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia, crashed in Berg-Kampenhout, about 45 minutes outside of Brussels, Belgium. From this loss arose the U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund, with a mission to pro- vide qualified U.S. Figure Skating members with monetary assistance in pursuing goals both on and off the ice. Committed to awarding athletic and academic grants and schol- arships to athletes who show competitive and/or academic excellence, the Memorial Fund awards more than $500,000 each year. Disbursed through three initiatives: the Competitive Skaters Assistance Programs (CSAP), the Academic Scholarship Program (ASP) and the RISE Youth Essay Contest, the U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund has provided more than $10 million in financial assistance over the past 63 years. It has supported Olympic champions including Peggy Fleming, Brian Boitano, Scott Hamilton, Kristi Yamaguchi and Evan Lysacek. This year more than 150 athletes received funding through its programs. To learn more about the Memorial Fund and how you can support it, visit www.1961memorialfund.com.

OTHER PROGRAMS In addition to the programs listed before, U.S. Figure Skating offers various other programs, including Theatre On Ice, National Showcase, High School team competi- tions, Graduating Seniors Program, Solo Dance, State Games, Excel Series, Collegiate, Adaptive/Special Olympics and Therapeutic Skating.
