Writing Workshop at Lisbon Congress

sempre.

Just as he was about to address the assembled guests, he lost his voice

Alexandra Coimbra, Sociedade Portuguesa de Psicanálise When he was about to address the assembled guests, he lost his voice. And he lost himself in his own thoughts. He had many doubts about holding that celebration. Is retirement a date to celebrate? Apparently, he thought so, or else he had been persuaded by his wife, children, and colleagues at the office. Now, in front of everyone, he doubted the speech he had in front of him on a sheet of paper. He doubted whether it was what he wanted to say, whether everything he had written was true. However, when he wrote it, it seemed fine. He talked about his family, thanked his parents, had a special dedication to his wife, a word for each child, a thank you to his colleagues, a closing of what his life had been up to that point, and empty words about what it would be like from then on. Was that what he wanted to say? He hid his feelings, thinking that everyone would take his silence as emotion. And, in fact, he was moved, but suddenly all the scattered thoughts of recent times, the questions, the doubts, came together and made sense. He realised that he could now speak. He placed the pages of the speech that had taken him so long to write on the table beside him. He cleared his throat and began: ‘I want to thank everyone for being here...’ and he continued, his thanks and gratitude for some of the people were genuine. But he added: ‘More important than the stage that ends today is the one I am about to begin, and that is what I would like to share with you.’ In the end, it was the guests who fell silent until applause began to ring out. He had managed to surprise them. He smiled, moved and satisfied. Alexandre Castro e Silva, Sociedade Portuguesa de Psicanálise Just as he was about to address the assembled guests, he lost his voice… Everyone stared at the man in bewilderment. He tried to speak, but only his lips moved because nothing came out. A woman ran up to him and patted him on the back, and they heard: - "Bo…, Bom…, Bomb! There's a Bomb in The Building!"
