Board of Trustees meeting Agenda | May 2019

Calls for Service The University Police and Public Safety (UPPS) averages 4,300 calls for police service per calendar year over each of the last five years. That number includes proactive patrol, which performs building securities (locking open doors), security checks, escorts, social contacts and traffic stops. During the last four years, calls for service (911 generated) have increased by an average of 7.815% each year. Conversely, the number of total calls has declined from a high of 4,597 to 4,108 in 2018. We believe that this is due to the increase in the investigative calls, which limits our ability to do proactive policing. We have seen a spike in the number of mental health calls on campus that can take hours to resolve from start to finish. The increase of those calls from 2017 (23) to 2018 (51) is approximately 120%. These calls take the officers away from the campus while they wait at the hospital for an evaluation to be completed. The graph below represents total calls for service as well as 911 generated calls. Calls for service that are 911 generated require more hours, such as responding to the call, attending to the person, and compiling required reports. Figure 1
