It is common for law enforcement agencies to compare themselves with departments similar in size and function. Eastern Washington University Police Department (EWUPD) and Western Washington University Police Department (WWUPD) are used for comparison with the CWU Police Department. Consistently CWU has reported a higher level of Clery Act crimes than EWU or WWU. The federal Clery Act requires all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to keep and disclose information about crime on and near their respective campuses. Compliance is monitored by the United States Department of Education, which can impose civil penalties, up to $54,789 per violation, against institutions for each infraction and can suspend institutions from participating in federal student financial aid programs. CWU officers are routinely reporting more crimes, investigating crimes that are more serious, and handling more calls for service than EWU or WWU. We attribute this to our community and student outreach efforts in creating a safe and welcoming campus environment where students feel more comfortable reporting a crime to our law enforcement officers.
