Outrigger Canoe Club

The official publication of the Outrigger Canoe Club is titled Ama to honor the Club’s lineage. The outrigger of a canoe is called an Ama in ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i (Hawaiian Language). It was a nautical innovation that allowed the Polynesians to efficiently navigate the rough waters of the Pacific. The Ama is also the port hull of a double-hulled canoe, which is the vehicle that brought the Hawaiians to these beautiful islands.

From the President’s Desk

As President, I’ve received many comments and pieces of advice from members. I put them in three buckets that start out something like this:

• “I just love this Club…” • “This Club is great, BUT you really need to…” • “My membership number is 99999 and I’m not happy at all with…” Of course, all comments are welcome but when they come in one at a time, it’s hard to figure out whether they’re one-off opinions or a reflection of the majority. To clarify priorities,

• When asked the importance of specific items in choosing to keep one’s membership, only 3% of members chose “Commitment to athletics.” However, most would agree that athletics is the DNA of our Club. Are the significant resources devoted to athletics justified? If so, how much is too much? • 19% of members who took the survey weren’t satisfied with Ama magazine. Do we modify Ama with hopes of better

satisfying the minority, or do we find this level of satisfaction for a print publication acceptable?

the Board conducts a member survey every two years (note: the 2021 survey was postponed to 2022 due to COVID). Detailed results will be shared soon but overall, the responses indicate a high level of member satisfaction and an improvement over 2019. On a 10-point scale with 10 being Very Satisfied: • Overall OCC satisfaction increased from a mean score of 7.9 in 2019 to 8.1, with the highest score of 8.5 from members 75 years and over • Of the 40+ questions pertaining to satisfaction with various aspects of OCC, scores increased by 1 to 8 percentage points in all areas except two that declined by 1 point • Satisfaction with Value for Price Paid increased from a mean score of 6.6 to 7.3 By no means do these results suggest that improvements aren’t needed. But interpreting the results and selecting areas to focus on can be challenging given the various segments our membership represents, each with its own perspective. For example: • The newly expanded fitness center was given one of the lowest usage scores (7 out of 100), but those who use it are highly satisfied. Does that mean we should focus resources elsewhere since it targets a relatively small segment of our membership, or work to maintain the high level of satisfaction that already exists?

We love feedback! Please send us and email at: Ama@outriggercanoeclub.com!

I am constantly reminded that these minority groups make up the diverse lifeblood of our Club and yes, we need to take all into account as we prioritize our resources. However, resources are not endless, choices must be made, and inevitably not every member will be pleased with every decision. But rest assured that when the Board and Committees meet to discuss priorities in our Fall Strategic Planning and budgeting sessions, decisions will continue to be guided by our Club’s Mission and Core Values. And finally, once planning and budgeting decisions are made, we will communicate them to the membership, ensuring we all have a better understanding of the priorities and tradeoffs agreed upon for next year.

General Manager’s Corner

ALOHA OCC ‘OHANA, Hard to believe that the Holidays are right around the corner. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in our Outrigger ‘Ohana a wonderful and safe holiday season and best wishes in the new year!

This month, I want to share information about the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation (ODKF). In July, ODKF elected Dr. Jenifer Bossert to a two-year term as President of the Board; she is the first Club member to serve in this leadership position since 2018. Jen joined the Outrigger Canoe Club 25 years ago and has continuously served on various

committees, including several years as Chair of the Canoe Racing Committee with oversight of the Macfarlane Regatta, three years as Club Captain, and six years on the Board of Directors. Jen is also a past Director of the O‘ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association (OHCRA) and a past Racing Committee Member of Moloka‘i Hoe. She has a solid understanding of the Club and what it stands for. For all these reasons, we are excited about Jen’s leadership of the foundation that bears our name.

From ODKF President Jenifer Bossert:

Aloha OCC ‘Ohana, Tyler, our wonderful GM, has been kind enough to share his column with me so I can write about ODKF, a nonprofit organization very dear to my heart, and deeply connected to the Outrigger Canoe Club. I was invited many years ago to serve on the ODKF Scholarship Selection Committee. In reviewing hundreds of applications from Hawai‘i’s student scholar-athletes, I was inspired by the outstanding character, community service, athletics and aloha spirit displayed by the candidates. It’s been a joy to represent the Club, bestowing financial support on these amazing athletes as they spread across the U.S. and the world for college and competition. It was this feeling that drew me back to volunteering for the committee year after year. After finishing my service on the OCC’s Board of Directors in 2019, I was invited to join the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation Board. During the pandemic years, we moved all of our meetings from the Duke Room to Zoom and our volunteer board and liaisons made sure the legacy of giving continued virtually.

Tyler Roukema, General Manager

ODKF perpetuates Duke’s legacy by financially supporting scholarships for local athletes and grants for local athletic events, including the Club’s own.

Hawai‘i’s athletes spread aloha to the world, just as Duke did. I invite all members to help support our foundation: join us at our Hawai‘i Waterman Hall of Fame induction event in December, Duke’s Night scholarship celebration in the spring, or Duke’s OceanFest in August; donate through our website, social media, or even give monthly through your OCC membership (inquire with the OCC business office); volunteer on one of our committees; or simply give some encouragement to one of our scholars. Finally, please consider ODKF in your end- of-year giving and your estate planning. Feel free to contact me or any of our Board members with any questions or ideas you may have. In Duke’s words, aloha to you,

Now, as the newly elected ODKF President, one of my priorities is reconnecting our OCC membership to the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation. Many of our newer and/or younger members do not know that the foundation was started by OCC members, under the oversight of Duke’s widow, Nadine Kahanamoku, by merging their two separate foundations in 1986. Our founding members instituted a requirement that two-thirds of the ODKF board be OCC members, a responsibility that we carry on to this day. Duke Kahanamoku—a strong, physically fit, humble Native Hawaiian Olympian and prodigious waterman who embodied the aloha spirit— represents the ideals of our Club. We were lucky to have Duke in our membership during his lifetime, and we are privileged to continue Duke’s legacy today through our foundation. ODKF perpetuates Duke’s legacy by financially supporting scholarships for local athletes and grants for local athletic events, including the Club’s own. In 2022, ODKF gave out $40,000 in team and event grants, with 25% specifically supporting OCC’s Cline Mann Paddleboard Race, Dad Center Canoe Race, and Macfarlane Regatta. This year, ODKF also distributed 41 scholarships totaling $132,300, with seven (17%) of these scholarships totaling $25,200 (19% of planned giving) going to students who are also OCC members. When you give to ODKF, you are also supporting our Club’s athletic community. Our public charity also looks outward to mālama young athletes, teams and events throughout the state. Since 1986, ODKF has gifted over $3.3 million through 822 grants and 1,081 scholarships across the islands. We are helping to ensure that the sports of old Hawai‘i will always have a place here and that

Summer Forever ➳ While it’s no longer summer, there’s a new drink that can help you live in a perpetually sunny state of mind. The new bubbly beverage is the Pogmosa, which marries sparkling white wine with tart passionfruit, sweet orange, and pink guava. The brand, Summer Club, is helmed by OCC members Jennifer Binney and Larissa Nordyke, who believe that enjoying a drink with loved ones is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Reading 'Riggers

Six Years of Reading ’Riggers By Gerry DeBenedetti

➳ Hard to believe, but Reading ‘Riggers is six years old. We were born, toddled, walked and went into hiding (but kept reading) for nine months during the COVID shutdown. We then got immunized and boosted, and we are stronger and reading more than ever. We read Hawaiiana—either by subject or author, just some Hawai‘i connection—both fiction and nonfiction, romance and mystery, adventure and travel, history, and humor. We also offer OCC authors a place to showcase their talent and hard work. In fact, some of our author members have appeared more than once. As long as they keep writing, we’ll keep reading. Whenever possible we ask the author to appear, and if for whatever reason they cannot, we ask a guest presenter who’s either knowledgeable about the author or subject matter. We sometimes have audio visuals or short TV clips. One of our selections has even been made into a movie, so we’ll watch that over a long lunch someday. Information about upcoming titles is on the weekly email to members. Two to three months of titles appear on the electronic bulletin boards in the lobby and tunnel. In addition, Reading ‘Riggers has its own email list that sends out reminders, notices about TV or movie schedules related to our reading, bookstore discussions, and anything we think we need to know. If you’d like to be on that list, leave your information at the OCC Front Desk for Gerry D.

November 4 Reflections in Stone and Bronze: Exploring Hawai‘i’s History and Culture Through Sculpture By Cheryl Soon (author will be present) This is a good reference book, sort of a Hawaiian dictionary of statuary, and those who value Hawaiiana should have a home copy. It’s also available at the library. December 2 Under The Wave at Waimea and The Happy Isles of Oceania : Paddling the Pacific By Paul Theroux (OCC member & author will be present) Under The Wave is a fictional story set on the North Shore, featuring an aging surfer and a moral conundrum, while The Happy Isles of Oceania , is a nonfiction account of travels through the Pacific by kayak. 

“S

ometimes you have real- ly rough seas and some- times you have really calm and fantastic seas

where everything is going in the right direction. Sometimes you have to paddle up against the wind and the waves. And that’s the challenge in life,” said Outrigger Canoe Club paddler, coach, and father, Ikaika Kincaid. “There’s a lot of metaphors that we bring into teaching our kids and our family about the ocean and life. There’s similarities in good days, bad days, awesome days, and really crap- py ones. Sometimes it’s about the voyage and getting there and going through all of it. And doing that with a family that has the same mentality is pretty cool,” he continued. It’s the im- portance of family that is at the core of paddling for Ikaika, who has count- ed on both—family and paddling—to see him through good days and bad, which is a lesson he has passed on to his growing keiki, now in their teens. Kincaid is a member of a larger ‘ohana of championship-winning paddlers. Though they are spread across Maui and O‘ahu, the family’s love of paddling is the bond that keeps them close. A sport that is a weekend hobby for many is a way of life for the three generations of Kincaid kin. They regularly paddle together—it’s their version of quality family time. Together, they talk story, crack jokes, learn from one another, and stay in

shape both mentally and physically. Papa Kincaid, better known as Jim- my, is the patriarch of the family and still paddles with his kids, including Ikaika, and now his grandkids. “You get in the water, you wash off the day, get your head screwed back on the right. You won’t be too stressed about stuff that’s going on in life and keeps everybody grounded. So it works for me,” said the spirited 73-year-old. “I share that with my kids. My kids share that with their kids. And now here we are, I’m in my seventies and I am still hanging out with my grandkids, getting in the water. It’s pretty epic.” Epic is right. This past summer, the family completed a three-channel crossing together (on a whim!). Needing to ship a canoe to inner-island, Jimmy was considering his transport options, then got an idea: “I thought, ‘Oh, you know what? Let me just check with the kids. Maybe we’ll just pad- dle it back.’ So I reached out to the grandkids.” After a flurry of enthusias- tic texts and with a little help from a few good friends, the escort boat was secured and stocked, the canoe was in the water, and three generations of Kincaids, some of whom bought last minute tickets from neighbor islands, put their paddles in the water and began their multi-day, multi-channel, multi-island voyage. “After we loaded our provisions on Johnny Mack’s 27-foot Hawaiian Power Cat at Mala Wharf, he and Pia Aluli made the 6-mile drive up the

A FAMILY OF VOYAGERS

contributed to the family bond that continues to flourish through the present day. As Outrigger Canoe Club mem- bers, the club has long served as a source of health, friendship, and pride—a place where they can exercise, meet, compete, even win championships. Jimmy, who calls the island of Maui home, still logs ample time with family and friends at the O‘ahu club. The grandchildren frequent the club as well, and Jimmy’s granddaughter Mehana is training in the hopes of securing her spot on the 2024 Olympic kayaking team.

Pa‘ahana Kincaid

Ikaika is a dedicated coach for the boys team and he recognizes the signif- icance of training with elite teams like OCC’s through his own experience. “[Training with the club] allowed me to elevate my paddling career to the high- est level, really,” Ikaika said. “I’ve paddled with a bunch of other clubs before coming over and we’ve gotten close to winning it all, but I wasn’t really able to do that until I was able to go over to the Outrigger. Winning those two years back-to-back for the Moloka‘i was just, you know, phenomenal.” And though he admits to slowing down a bit these days, Ikaika, like his fa- ther, is proud to watch his keiki—and the Kincaid legacy—grow through the challenges (and fun) of the ocean and the sport. “My dad helped pass on that mana to me, and therefore, his grandkids,” he continued, “To be able to pass on all that water knowledge to my kids…They, every single one of ‘em, have enjoyed it. Paddling together has always been a special, special moment.”

west coast to Honokahua Bay and started the paddle to Kaunakakai, [Moloka‘i],” Jimmy added. As a team, the ‘ohana was seamless, equally contributing their strength to each rotation, and swapping for breaks throughout the journey. Their years of paddling together proved necessary, as they made their way without issue across the channels to Moloka‘i, then landing on O‘ahu. The feat was one of which Papa Kincaid is especially proud. “I’m sharing with them what I know and it’s something that they want to be a part of and ac- cept being a part of,” he noted. “To be able to share that with them and watch them accomplish something like that…” Jimmy trails off, but the message is clear. He has built his liv- ing legacy in paddling. In its own way, the legacy is also an homage to Jimmy’s late wife, Ardythe, the matriarch of the Kincaid ‘Ohana. Jimmy credits Ardythe with getting him hooked on the sport, countless decades ago. ”She was the good pad- dler in the family,” he recalls lovingly, as he describes her passion and talent in the sport. Though she lost her battle with cancer in 1991, she, too,

Winning Across the Pond Outrigger paddlers garnered numerous medals at the Va’a World Elite and Club Sprint Championships at Dorney Lake in Windsor, United Kingdom. By William Johnson ➳ In August, our 6 open women, all OCC paddlers, captured two silver medals in the Elite Division 1000-meter and 1500-meter races, finishing second place to New Zealand. Many of our Outrigger paddlers partnered with paddlers from other Hawai‘i clubs for the Club Division, and they successfully took home many gold, silver and bronze medals. Team Hawai‘i had over 370 paddlers participating in this bi-annual event, easily the largest contingent, which included Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Sweden, Tahiti, Samoa, Singapore, Germany and England, among others. The races took place at Dorney Lake, the site of the 2012 Rowing Olympics, which is also near Windsor Castle. Most of the teams stayed in or near Windsor on the banks of the River Thames, enjoying the many shops and restaurants and taking advantage of the proximity to London (about a 30-minute train ride).
