OPP WARNS PUBLIC AGAINST CYBERCRIMINALS

Police believe if people knew more about how cybercriminals work there would be fewer problems with identity theft and other cyber crimes. The OPP want more people to understand how cybercriminals think and plan their crimes. That includes understanding the weaknesses they focus on when they target someone: gullibility, greed, complacency, and ignorance. “Everyone is a target for malicious online activity,” stated an OPP advisory, as part of the October Cybercrime Awareness Month campaign. “That includes youth, businesses, and government offices. Cybercriminals extort money and personal data from unsus- pecting victims by taking advantage of low cyber security awareness.” Cybersecurity, advised OPP, begins with simple commonsense rules for dealing with personal and business email. “Use strong passwords for email accounts,” stated the OPP advisory. “That means using both capital and lower-case letters in the password and also including random numbers and special symbols like #, @, %, or &, to make the password more difficult for a hacker to predict. That includes those which claim to be from an agency like the Canadian Revenue Service or a well-known company like Amazon. Backup all your critical files to an external hard drive or flash drive which is removable. Keep all computer security systems updated. Be careful on social media about sharing any personal information. Parents should also talk to their children about safe and unsafe use of social media and about cyberbullying.
