two days. Temperatures began to drop from the mid- to high-30s after the Canada Day thunderstorms until they reached the low 20s by the weekend. But residents should still take steps to keep cool as humidity conditions remain high and make even cooler temperatures seem warmer than usual. Local forecasts at the Environment Canada website indicate that temperatures will rise again to the high-20s and low-30s during the first full week of July along with the chance of rain. During high temperature and humidity conditions the risk of suffering heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke increase for everyone spending moderate to large amounts of time outside without taking
adequate protection measures. Seniors, infants and very young children, and people with some chronic health conditions like heart problems or asthma may be more at risk for heat-related illnesses. Residents should check local weather forecasts and take precautions, including keeping air conditioners or fans turned on indoors to help provide some cooling air conditions. Anyone who does not have air conditioning should check their municipal websites for the location of the nearest designated cooling centre where they can go. Keep in touch with family members or neighbours who do not have air conditioning to make sure they are okay. Whether outdoors or indoors, drink lots of water or other cold liquids to remain hydra- ted. Drink water or juices even when not feeling thirsty. Alcohol is not recommended for hydration as it is a diuretic and tends to dehydrate a person. Dress for hot and/or humid weather conditions, whether outdoors or indoors. Clothing should be loose-fitting and light-co- loured. Wear a wide-brimmed hat outdoors.
Children and infants should be dressed in light clothing and not bundled up in heavy clothing or blankets. Always use sunscreen when outdoors. Avoid making meals that require an oven for cooking as the heat escaping from the oven will add to the heat indoors. Keep window blinds and drapes closed during the day, and turn off all lights and electronics that are not in use. At night, if possible, open windows to allow cooler air into the house. Use wet towels or cloths as cooling wipes. When working or playing outside, keep to the shade as much as possible. Try to schedule outdoor activities to the early morning or evening when it is cooler. Take “cooling breaks” to get out of the sun and always drink water as often as possible. Do not leave children or pets alone in parked vehicles in direct sunlight during trips for shopping or doing errands. Anyone working outside in areas with mosquitoes should apply sunscreen first and then a good mosquito repellant. More detailed advice is available at www. eohu.ca.
High temperatures and sweltering humi- dity in Eastern Ontario since Canada Day prompted the regional health unit to advise residents to take steps to deal with what could be the first heatwave of the season. The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) posted a heatwave advisory notice on its website after receiving reports from Envi- ronment and Climate Change Canada about the initial temperatures and overall weather conditions marking the start of July.
