WELCOME “The limits of my language are the limits of my world.” Ludwig Wittgenstein Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1921) It was the Old Alleynian philosopher GE Moore who suggested to the young Wittgenstein, who was to put the analysis of language at the heart of 20th century Western philosophy, that he might echo Spinoza’s Tractatus Theologico-Politicus (1677) in the title of his first published work. One of the most well-known and interrogated statements from Wittgenstein’s remarkably influential work stands as a fitting epigraph for our latest Free Learning enterprise. Dulwich Linguistic is your passport to crossing frontiers into the languages and cultures of countries beyond the English-speaking world. The week will challenge your linguistic limits, your perceptions of how you see yourself in a rapidly shrinking world and heighten your appreciation of communication in all its forms. The week will be devoted to celebrating languages on every level and all five Schools will be transmogrified into a veritable melting pot of events and activities crossing the imaginary divides between languages, science, music, mathematics, academia, business and sport. In one day, where else could you make your protest through the creative medium of screen-printing and be transported to Renaissance Italy via the phonetics of ventriloquism? This programme is a daily guide to the fascinating and diverse range of events on offer throughout the week – whether it be playing your part in the living wall of Dulwich language, enjoying a tour to the Courtauld Gallery, or speed-dating in Ancient Hebrew. This is your opportunity to engage and take your learning beyond the classroom. We hope you enjoy it. Multi-lingual Treasure Hunt The quickest correct entry in each School wins a prize and all other correct entries will go into a prize draw. Bon Appetit Daily themed lunches in the Christison Hall from France, Germany, Italy, China and Spain. The Dulwich Wall of language An organic body of language drawn from the Dulwich community will be constructed on big screens in the Lower Hall. Read my lips Well-known ventriloquist Owen Reid will be teaching Year 6-13 classes the basics of ventriloquism and helping boys understand spelling in different languages.
My Favourite Word Video Booth
Use our video booth to record your favourite word or phrase in any language. Look out for the uploads on MyDulwich. Flying the flag Daily flag raising of our Dulwich- taught languages by pupils from all five Schools. The Dulwich Language census Take part in the annual census. Last year there were more than 50 different languages spoken across the Dulwich community. Latin Roots Year 10-13 Biologists will be taking a closer look at the Latin and Greek suffixes and prefixes of common biological terms.
Mystery Reader DUCKS pupils will find out about different languages from a daily mystery reader. Parent Talks Dulwich parents will be giving talks to DUCKS pupils on experiences of living overseas. Registration language hijack DUCKS and Junior School registration will be conducted in a different language each day. Human Library sessions Lower School boys interview volunteers who have experience of a different culture.
Dulwich Linguistic Colours Competition Lower School boys design a Dulwich Linguistic Colours tie. Decoding Linear B – in Latin classes Lower School boys will be translating Linear B, the earliest understood European writing system. A History of the English Language in Ten Scenes Lower School boys will be creating a Tableau Vivant of how the English language has changed from the Anglo-Saxons to the Internet Age.

In Transit James caird hall and the store This is a dual exhibition taking place across the Dulwich College campus. It spotlights global issues around displacement, communication and ‘Being Human’. Have your say! ‘The Protest’ provides the perfect platform for exchange, where ideas are generated through interaction. The Art department will transform the South Cloisters into a screen print workshop cum exhibition space. Comment on socio-political issues and participate in an evolving art installation that echoes the collective Alleynian spirit and takes the language of protest as a means to explore its potency. Using the screen print process as a site for experimental collaborative practice, our creative workshops will generate ideas & imagery that will form the exhibition around us.
Drama Commedia dell’arte
Year 9 pupils at the College will play with physical theatre in Drama lessons and look at some of the techniques for Commedia dell’arte.
Friday 4 November: Middle School Assembly “This house believes that in the light of Brexit, compulsory language learning in the UK should be abandoned”. As a taster to Dulwich Linguistic week, four boys from our Debating Society will be tackling this topical issue in assembly. DEBATE

Tour de Dulwich
Test your cycling skills! Rollapaluza will set up their rigs with mounted bicycles and digital stopwatches so you can race against the clock or a fellow cycling enthusiast. A demonstration from Dulwich’s cycling team will take place at break time and come back at lunch if you want to have a go! Introduction to Linguistics Professor Hudson, founder of the UK Linguistics Olympiad, offers a fascinating introduction to the study of Linguistics.

Chris Dennis, a regular presenter on the BBC Today Programme, discusses how languages can be a passport to a career in sports journalism. A Taste of Spain: a celebration of Spanish music, wine and gastronomy The George Farha Auditorium will be filled with the sounds of Spanish guitars with performances from the Junior, Segovia and Barrios Ensembles as well as individual performances. In transit, 6–8pm in The James Caird HALL and The Store Through his art, Luc Nonga presents questions for our society that challenge our thinking on dual identity and the experience of first generation migrants living in the UK. Luc draws on a deep and diverse well of personal experiences.

But Dulwich Linguistic Week doesn’t end there: MONDAY 14 NOVEMBER Where would I be without languages? Question time chaired by Huw Edwards: all Year 11 pupils, periods 4-6, George Farha Auditorium. Leading figures from law, journalism and publishing share their experiences of working in global industries. In particular, they pinpoint moments in their careers where languages have given them opportunities to break through. Hosted by the BBC’s Huw Edwards, the short talks will be followed by a Q&A session in which boys can start to map out their own future careers with an understanding of how languages might play a vital, and sometimes unexpected role.
Looking for a real linguistic challenge? Try the… Schatzjagd! Chasse au trésor! búsquedadel Tesoro! caccia al Tesoro! (The Dulwich Linguistic Treasure Hunt!) A multi-lingual treasure hunt runs throughout Dulwich Linguistic week with major prizes for successful teams or individuals in each of the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools. The quickest correct entry in each school wins a prize and all other correct entries will be entered into a draw with a prize in each School. How to play: All the clues lead you to a place in the College grounds. Each is in a foreign language. Working out which language and a translation is the first challenge, finding the right place is the second! The Lower School has its own treasure hunt route and Middle and Upper Schools follow the same route. There are 3 clues to work out each day of the week. The first clue each day is a video clue on MyDulwich. If the number at your third location of the day doesn’t tell you to wait for a video, you’ve gone wrong, so re-trace your steps! To play, follow the clue to the place described and look for a Dulwich Linguistic Treasure Hunt sign with a number on it. That number is the next clue to follow from the 40 listed below. Note down each number you find in the answer boxes in this booklet, then put the full sequence of 15 numbers into the entry form on MyDulwich. The deadline for entries is 5pm on Monday 14th November.
