ALICE UPDATE Together, we are alleviating hardships for ALICE households

We all know someone who is ALICE. Every day, people in ALICE households are making difficult choices — such as deciding between quality childcare or paying the rent. The success of our community is inextricably connected to the financial stability of Broward County’s ALICE households. When people who are ALICE suffer and are forced to make difficult choices, we all face serious consequences. For example, the relentless escalation of housing costs, affecting both renters and homeowners, casts a profound shadow over ALICE families. Broward County’s housing crisis has triggered a notable surge in extremely cost- burdened households — exacerbated by a rapidly growing population, escalating insurance costs and an influx of out-of-state investors purchasing homes for rental purposes. This is where our United Way, donors like you, volunteers, advocates and community partners are making monumental impact. Your support of our United Way and our 130+ programs is providing essential care, support and stability — improving the lives of thousands of children, adults and seniors in our community living at and below the Federal Poverty Level.

In 2023, a sharper picture emerged of the financial hardships people in Broward County are facing on a daily basis. ALICE is an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed — households earning more than the Federal Poverty Level, but less than the basic cost of living for the county. These people are working hard but struggling to keep pace with the rising costs for household essentials. People in the ALICE threshold keep Broward County’s economic engine humming. These families of all races and ages work in jobs essential to the well-being of our community, such as healthcare professionals, childcare workers, teachers, law enforcement and non-profit staff.

BYC Student Becomes Empowered Advocate for Social Change

The Broward Youth Coalition (BYC) — part of our United Way’s Commission on Behavioral Health & Drug Prevention — is a dynamic group of middle- and high-school students who act as peer advocates for substance use prevention and mental health promotion in our community. BYC provides young people with a range of ways to participate in volunteer opportunities, network with community leaders, explore college and career options, and develop both personal and professional skills. Ava, a student at Millennium 6-12 Collegiate Academy, got connected to BYC in 2020 when she was a freshman, and now as a senior, she is the current president of BYC. “Being involved with BYC has been powerful in many ways. I have learned how to be an advocate for equity for under-served people, how to identify warning signs in people’s mental health and how to prioritize my own mental health,” says Ava. “In BYC, we dive into specific, actionable ways to promote better care for ourselves and the people around us. BYC is unmatched in how it connects like-minded students, instills confidence and empowers its members. We really have a unique culture of care, empathy, trust and action. Plus hundreds of BYC students gather at great events like the Youth Leadership Institute and Alternative Spring Break throughout the year, and our work together is redefining community service. I hope donors know their support is paving the future for brighter, better lives!”

ReadingPals Make a Difference — One Mentor Shares His Meaningful Experience ReadingPals, one of United Way of Broward County’s programs, is a literacy initiative in our community connecting volunteers/ mentors with students from pre-k to third grade who may need extra help. Our ReadingPals volunteers have been paired with thousands of young children in Broward County, and they are building meaningful relationships with young students, supporting their social-emotional development and improving their skills with reading and overall learning. Brendan — a volunteer at Gulfstream Academy in Hallandale Beach — is one of nearly 2,000 mentors who have participated in the ReadingPals program since its inception in 2012. “When I learned about the opportunity with ReadingPals, I jumped on it. I always wanted to help kids, and ReadingPals targets the schools and the kids who need the most assistance. It is so meaningful to know I am helping children, seeing improvements and making education fun.” says Brendan. “I have worked with several kids since 2021, and they always are eager and excited to get started. When I returned to Gulfstream Academy this year to help new students, I saw a former student in the hallway, and he ran to me, gave me a hug and proudly told me he still is reading every day. It means so much to me that I can be a part of children’s excitement and joy about education.”

MISSION UNITED Delivers Essential Support to a Veteran Couple Our United Way’s MISSION UNITED initiative provides comprehensive, wraparound services to help U.S. Veterans find stability and well-being in their post-military lives, and the wide range of assistance includes job placement, housing support, counseling services and much more. Originally from North Carolina, Charlotte and Charles have been married for 50 years, and now in their 70s, this Veteran household began to have difficulties with affording the rising costs of housing in Broward County. “Our rent already was high, and the landlord was going to increase it again by 11%. We didn’t know what to do. One day, I was in one of my doctor’s offices, and I saw information about MISSION UNITED. Among the services offered was housing support. When I called, I immediately got connected to a case manager. The care with MISSION UNITED has been a total blessing for us. We have been flabbergasted by the services available to us,” says Charlotte. “In addition to challenges with housing, we had car problems, and we just didn’t have the extra money. I told my case manager about this unexpected expense, and MISSION UNITED helped us find a way to pay for these repairs. Because of MISSION UNITED, our life has changed. With MISSION UNITED’s guidance, we have been able to save money, and now we are looking to buying a home. Because of the generosity from donors, Veterans like Charles and me can get assitance with housing and not end up homeless.”
