FBA: Shipments Slip In September 2021
According to statistics released by the Fibre Box Association (FBA), industry shipments of corrugated products decreased 1.8 per- cent, from 34.901 bsf in September of 2020 to 34.261 bsf in September of 2021. Aver- age-week shipments also decreased 1.8 per- cent, from 8.310 bsf in 2020 to 8.157 bsf in 2021. Shipments rose to 4.5 percent year-to- date over 2020’s rate. Containerboard consumption decreased 2.4 percent, from 2.8459 million tons in Sep- tember of 2020 to 2.7786 million tons in Sep- tember of 2021. Consumption, however, in- creased 3.8 percent year-to-date over 2020, from 24.5672 million tons to 25.4959 million tons. Containerboard inventory at corrugator plants increased 3.8 percent from August to September 2021. Weeks of supply increased from 3.4 to 3.5. or 2.9 percent. “As domestic demand has slowed, con- tainerboard inventories have risen, adding volume for six consecutive months, including 60,800 tons last month,” noted Dick Storat in his Scoring Boxes newsletter. “Weeks of supply, which had been as low as 3.4 weeks in April, rose to 4.1 weeks at the end of last

It’s an important addition, says Engelberg, because it provides more ca- pacity and increases the size of the packag- es that can be produced. Everything is now automated, he says, and this department is displaying much higher speeds and efficiency. WSoftSoftware has announced the impending release of a single-source integrated software suite that can increase the accuracy of a company’s AP and AR processing and increase disbursement options from two to five. The soft- ware gives companies a quicker way to send customers not only statements but copies of invoices and signed bill of lading/delivery receipt. One of the largest independent corrugated companies in the U.S. has been using this software for over 15 years, and it is now ready to be released to the corrugated indus- try and the general public. The AutoAP program allows a company’s vendors to email or FTP their invoices, which then gets imported into the AutoAP Program. This program then performs a three- way match to verify a PO was entered, the product was received, and matches the vendor’s invoice. Unmatched invoices go on a daily exception report that gets emailed to the user who will be required to fix the exception. By reducing the time it takes to process a company’s AP, the company has more ability to negotiate better terms with the vendor. The Lockbox program reduces the time it takes to ap- ply cash. This program imports your bank’s lockbox file, matches the payment to the customer’s invoice, then auto-

DS Smith Survey: Pandemic Triggers Embrace Of Sustainable Packaging A pandemic-induced surge in e-commerce has left shop- pers with more boxes than ever before, triggering a rush by consumers to embrace recycling and raising the de- mand for sustainable packaging. But while there’s more interest in sustainability – especially among millennials – many buyers say they’re frustrated by the amount of unre- cyclable material showing up and the lack of easy access to local recycling sites. Those are among the major findings of a national sur- vey by DS Smith, a leading paper and packaging company that focuses on creating innovative and sustainable pack- aging solutions. A previous DS Smith survey shows 44 percent of respondents report getting more deliveries during the
COVID-19 pandemic. The latest results validate DS Smith’s work in producing more sustainable products for its busi- ness customers. An overwhelming 83 percent of consum- ers surveyed say the packages they receive aren’t fully re- cyclable because they contain other materials like plastic or Styrofoam. Only 17 percent report getting all-recyclable packages. The survey, taken last month, revealed dramatic home and lifestyle changes, with 30- to 39-year-olds having the largest jump in recycling habits due to the pandemic. More than a quarter (26 percent) say they’re recycling more, fol- lowed by those age 18 to 29 doing more at 21 percent. “DS Smith provides sustainable packaging for its cus- tomers with the goal of leading the transition to the circular economy,” said Mark Ushpol, Managing Director of Pack- aging at DS Smith. “Recycling is an important piece of that process, and with the rapid growth of e-commerce putting more boxes into homes than ever before, it’s encouraging to see this shift in consumer behavior toward recycling more.”
DS Smith is working to combat the deluge of unrecyclable packaging plaguing consum- ers by using its Circular Design Principles, developed and launched last year alongside
the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, to eliminate waste from its packaging in the early design stages. These results also come after DS Smith’s recent announcement that it has embedded its pioneering Circular Design Metrics across all its packaging sites.
