AICC Webinar To Help Members Use Benchmarking To Improve Margins AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, has been told by many members that their plants are being pushed further than they have seen in years. During busy times the efficiency of machines and teams is more critical than ever. AICC has developed new webinars to help members max- imize their machines and the knowledge of their teams. On Tuesday, October 26, AICC members can learn how companies are using benchmarking best practices to im- prove margins and reach peak performance in Operations Leaders: Get More from Your Machines Through Bench- marking. This webinar was developed with the support of AICC Member Guidewheel. AICC Technical Advisors Tom Weber and Ralph Young have joined up again to share their knowledge of pa-

perboard substrate surface characteristics and the man- ufacturing processes that build the printing interface for Defining the Graphic Grades of Substrates on Tuesday, November 9. Created with the support of AICC Education Investor, EFI, Best Practices for Effective Paper Management will teach attendees how to create a detailed analysis of a corrugator running schedule and identify huge saving op- portunities by consolidating paper grades and widths from your inventory on Thursday, November 11. Prioritizing a team’s limited time where it can have the greatest impact is critical - not just in today’s environment of labor and talent shortages, but also for the long term. In Operations Leaders: Prioritize Your Team’s Time to Get More from Your Machines, on Thursday, December 2, at- tendees will dig into best practices to identify and align their team around the actions that will have the greatest impact on the plant floor. Specifically, they will hear exam-

ples of how other companies identify and address top causes of downtime to move the needle on throughput and margin. This webinar was developed with the support of AICC Member Guidewheel. Selecting a converting machine based on specifications alone can lead to disappoint- ment. In this webinar, we will discuss con- siderations that are sometimes overlooked when selecting new converting equipment. Created with Etra Corrugated Solutions, LLC, Critical Considerations Overlooked When Selecting New Converting Equipment, on Wednesday, December 8, will explain how product mix and plant layout and infrastruc- ture need to come into the decision process. Register for any of these webinars at www.AICCbox.org/Calendar . All webinars can be purchased separately or with All Ac- cess Pass for one payment of $1,695. Par- ticipating companies receive a code that all employees can use to register for every webinar scheduled through July 2022. Visit www.AICCbox.org/Pass . Amtech Software To Exhibit At AICC Mexico In November Amtech Software will be exhibiting its com- pletely integrated EnCore ERP, Corrugator Scheduling, and Converting Scheduling Solutions at AICC Mexico in Monterrey, Mex- ico, November 17-19. It will also be discuss- ing how it can help plants and operations increase efficiencies by 30 percent with ScoreKeeper, its Production Monitoring and Digital Signage Solution. 40 ft of paper travel from preheater to hot plates 3 seconds of heat, glue and bonding 1 chance to get it right! the ZONE

Design & Production

Chicago Electric offers 10 technology solutions to control ‘the Zone’ CORRUGATOR Sectoral preheating plate

Our sectoral preheating plates provide direct heat by means of a double steam circuit, allowing for efficient heating in hard-to-access locations, as well as to act as a steam shower to open the paper’s fibre, making it receptive to absorbing the heat and the glue.

This translates into increased speed and improved quality of the cardboard sheet finish.

The system’s main advantages are as follows:

• The plate may only be used to heat, only to humidify, or both options at the same time. • The plate is sectored, which allows for applying humidity to the sections. • It provides temperature in previously inaccessible locations and near the location needed. • It compensates the loss of temperature dissipated due to distance, speed or limitations of the exiting preheaters. • Quick transferring of heat to the paper. • The combination of the hot plate and steam shower allows for providing heat even to the hardest papers to heat. • Does not dry out the paper. • Possibility of operating as a humidifier and pre-conditioner. • Maintains and improves the fibre’s elasticity. • Acts according to the operator’s needs. • Facilitates the paper’s hygroscopy to absorb the glue and improve rubberising.

calibrations and settings. Bar systems avoid this, but compensate this with the risk of exces- sive glue application. The system contains many wearing parts. Solution The contact roll combines the ad antage of both systems and ensures minimum contact between board and applicator roll. The system uses small pneumatic cylinders in order to achieve a “soft touch.”

6. Gap Control 7. Curved Plate 8. Roller Shoe Press When it comes to a short-term increas of web tension, spring loaded systems with shoes or airpressure activated system have problems in compensating these. The system is lifted for a short time. This may result in de-lamination and in the ‘double kiss’ effect. Solution For a defined and exact bonding point of the web fiv weight rollers will be installed usually over the first flat hotplate of the heating section. The rolls are mounted into a frame, which is actuated by means of two pneumatic cylinders. P oductivity Issu —Double Kiss Bonding

It offers a wide range of set- tings. The loadi g pressure can be varied, the number of shoes can be lifted in accordance t the line speed. The outer shoes can be lifted in accordance to the paper width. The shoe bars will be delivered pre-assembled for a short installation time. —Liftable for easy paper infeed and for cleaning of the machine —Position adjustable in paper direction to avoid grooves in hotplate Press Productivity Issue—Poor Heat Transfer Rollers are usually limiting the heat transfer, since they often have contact mainly on the edges of the plates due to wear or bent plates. They also cause often loss of caliper and bearing need to be replaced frequently. Airpressure actuated systems can only supply a limited pressure and have com- pared to shoe systems a closed surface. Renova is always searching for innovative solutions that improve every aspect of the operators’ work, from safe- ty to productivity. To achieve the purposes, in 2017 they began to think of a new technology that would improve every phase of the line, from roll preparation to splicing, passing through start-up and braking. The idea was born by interposing a regenerative mo- tor between the reel and the pneumatic brake. They have thus invented and patented an innovative energy-recov- ery hybrid brake: Revolution. The multi-disc pneumatic brake and the energy recov- ery motor work in tandem, always guaranteeing the re- quired braking performances. Signode Launches Multi FleX1 Electric Stretch Hood Technology

Glenview, Illinois based Signode, a leading global manufacturer of end- of-line packaging equipment, tools, and consumables, has announced the introduction of its new Multi FleX1 Electric stretch hood technology. The Multi FleX1 Electric is the latest addition to Signode’s popular Lachenmeier brand of stretch hooders used around the globe for opti- mized load containment. The newest offering features an electrically oper-

ated stretch frame and the machine frame movement is electrical as well. Its overall smaller footprint, due to reduced safety-area fencing, means that the Multi FleX1 Electric can also maximize valuable production floor space and be placed closer to a facility’s perimeter. “Our customers count on Signode to listen and respond to their needs with new technology, consumables, and service offerings,” said Mogens Jessen, Global Product Manager for Signode. “The new Multi FleX1 Elec- tric is a direct result of our close collaborations and partnerships across the globe.” The Multi FleX1 Electric shares the same powerful five-sided protection attributes as the traditional Multi FleX1. It has the ability to be fitted with several film rolls, allowing it to wrap multiple load sizes with greater vari- ations quickly. The machine hosts a variety of film patterns, including fully closed hoods, film sleeves, short hoods, and film reinforcement capabili- ties. The Multi Flex1 Electric is engineered for cubed loads, irregular loads with protrusions, and varying product shapes, and is capable of wrapping more than 200 loads per hour. From palletized goods in the food, beverage and pharma industry to bricks, blocks and bagged commodities in the building industry, the Multi FleX1 accommodates variable load sizes and types. Depending on the industry environment where the machine is operating, the Multi FleX1 is now available with either a hydraulically or an electrically operated stretch frame. And with multiple film options, including transparent, colored, per- forated and printed, it can be further tailored for other production require- ments from those requiring high-shelf storage to those for transparency to read barcodes. According to Jessen, the machine’s reliability and low maintenance are enabled by its new steel-reinforced timing belt movement. This ensures a well-balanced frame due to its Quatro timing belt suspension, the 4-sided frame suspension as in the existing Multi FleX1. CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

“The new addition will help improve work flow and in- crease production capacity to meet growing sales with both printing and converting customers,” said Matt Umen- tum, President, of Rol-Tec. “This includes a specially con- trolled 2,200 s.f center that houses our new laser engrav- ing machines. We not only produce the highest quality print sleeves, but our state-of-the-industry laser engraving technology can handle the largest cylinders and process customer art files direct to PDF without manual art ma- nipulation. This speeds production time, reduces file art charges, and prevents potential file transfer errors.” The company’s expanded metal machining operation is already transitioning into the new space to support the company’s roller and sleeve production. Machine installs start with five turning lathes including three full CNC lathes, two CNC milling centers and two CNC machining centers. A new CNC engine lathe capable of handling 240-inch roll lengths is presently awaiting delivery. Three new 5-ton bridge cranes can easily handle heavy rollers. Recently, Rol-Tec also increased roll production capa- bilities with the 2020 acquisition of Axis Grinding, a pre- cision roll manufacturer and roll grinder, located in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The plant expansion additionally accommodates a new employee locker room, new break room, and additional parking. The company growth is now driving new hiring. Employment inquiries are welcome by phone or via the company website: www.rol-tec.com .

As a leader in transit packaging, Signode provides extensive testing and verification of its technologies and products before application on the production floor. Sig- node’s International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) certi- fied lab provides a host of state-of-the art testing devices, including temperature-controlled rooms, drop-test equip- ment, and vibration tables. It also performs European Safe Logistics Association (EUMOS) testing, which is a dynamic test that can help evaluate the rigidity and stability of a load that is subjected to horizontal accelerations and de- celerations during transport. Armed with the new Koenig & Bauer Rap- ida 145 large-format press, Albany is utilizing its seven-color units and QualiTronic color control system to deliver the branding its cus- tomers demand. Not only does the new press assist Albany’s customers with high quality, but it strengthens its reputation in the market- place as a provider that saves on makeready times and can easily produce consistent col- or-matched packaging. Albany’s notable cus- tomers, restaurants and convenience stores include Boston Pizza and 7-Eleven, as well as retailers like Dick’s Sporting Goods. The Koenig & Bauer AllPro folder gluer is one of Albany’s more recent additions to its facility, bringing a total of four machines to its post-press delivery. It’s an important addition, says Engelberg, because it provides more ca- pacity and increases the size of the packag- es that can be produced. Everything is now automated, he says, and this department is displaying much higher speeds and efficiency. Sustainable packaging is a key component of Albany’s mantra. “As consumers continue to seek sustainable and eco-friendly packaging solutions, we’ve placed our efforts into form- ing relationships with paperboard suppliers that value and echo these environmental con- cerns,” says Engelberg. “As for production, we always make sure that our products are made of recyclable, high-density paperboard – al- lowing for durability and performance. “Our goal is to provide our customers with a positive experience and create the highest quality designs for them. When we deliver on those two-fold areas, we have succeeded in conveying our efficient, and reliable service and retaining another happy customer. That’s how we measure our company’s success.”

EFI Introduces Fiery FS500 Pro Platform

Fremont, California based Electronics For Imaging, Inc., (EFI) has announced its newest, most advanced step for- ward for the world’s leading digital front end (DFE) server solution for digital printing – the new EFI Fiery FS500 Pro platform. Fiery FS500 Pro will help print providers meet the challenges of shorter runs, faster turnaround times, less experienced staff, increased security standards and the need to reduce cost. The new Fiery DFE platform brings innovation to an extensive line-up of new, state-of- the-art digital printers coming for office, commercial, in- plant, packaging, and textile printing. “As the industry begins a recovery from the recent downturn, print businesses across all segments are look- ing to invest in solutions that enhance their productivity, reduce waste and shorten cycle times,” said John Henze, Vice President of sales and marketing, EFI Fiery. “That’s exactly what this brand-new Fiery platform brings, with advancements that take print businesses to new levels of production efficiency, color accuracy, and profit potential. We are excited to begin seeing our OEM partners roll out this new platform with their digital printers and presses.” The Fiery FS500 Pro platform features five key areas of innovation: CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

olution images. For more advanced preflight checks, Fiery Preflight Pro verifies file compliance with industry standards and specifications, such as PDF/X, PDF/VT, PDF 2.0, or GWG (Ghent Workgroup). The visual Pre- flight Pro Report makes it easy to find file errors, speed- ing time to print. Customers can produce higher-qual- ity jobs and personalized prints with a native Adobe PDF Print Engine 5.5 workflow, the default interpreter on external Fiery servers and an option on embedded servers; • More-accurate brand colors. A new Fiery TrueBrand solution for corporate users makes it easy to ensure accurate printing of brand colors from Microsoft Word or PowerPoint. In production environments, the new version of Fiery Spot Pro makes it faster for print pro- viders to get a media ready to print by optimizing all spot colors at once for the most accurate reproduction of brand colors; • Advanced security. Fiery FS500 Pro provides new fea- tures for high security environments, ensuring compli- ance with customer security requirements and industry standards. In addition to the latest security updates, Fiery FS500 Pro servers include a security audit log that can integrate into customer Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solutions, which help to detect and proactively address security-related issues. For more information about Fiery Driven printing using the world’s leading DFE solutions, visit www.efi.com .

• Faster job processing. Print providers will benefit from faster job processing time and up to 40% faster appli- cation launch time to produce more jobs per shift. For example, with the new Fiery FS500 Pro hardware and software platform, a graphics-intensive, 100-page pho- tobook processes 36 percent faster compared with previous Fiery platforms; • Faster turnaround time for short runs. Advanced Fiery features speed up administration and production of print jobs in fast moving print shops. A new print time estimation feature helps print operations better plan and schedule production resources for a more profit- able operation; • Fiery JobExpert, now available for all Fiery servers, saves valuable production minutes from job setup time by automatically choosing the right color and imaging settings. This unique feature is an example of adding intelligence to the digital front end compared to OEM DFEs that require users to know a myriad of settings to get jobs done correctly. • More sellable print, less waste. Fiery FS500 Pro has more tools available for detecting potential errors in files, reducing both production time and waste. Ex- ternal FS500 Pro servers now come standard with Fiery Preflight, which provides basic preflight checks for problems such as missing spot colors or low-res-

WSoftSoftware To Launch Integrated Software Suite

matically applies the cash. For companies with more than one database/ERP system, the program provides a single source to apply cash. By increasing the efficiency of AR to apply cash, the company now has more time to do Credit and Collections in turn reducing a company’s days sales outstanding. The Disbursement Program increases a company’s options to make payments. Most systems allow for ACH and printing checks to a local printer. WSoftSoftware’s Dis- bursement program takes the payment information and allows companies to make payments not only by ACH and in house printing, but also allowing your bank to print and mail checks. The program also allows payments via credit card and eliminates intercompany disbursements. The program centralizes the credit and collection pro- cess into one program. The AR Collection program shows the user who is not paying their bills and allows the user to drill into that customer’s AR. This program displays who to call and the phone number. It allows the user to not only email your customer their statement but emails a copy of the invoice and signed bill of lading. “Now the customer has all the information to pay their bill,” said the software’s creator, Jim Williams. “In short, this software reduces the need for a large accounting staff, while increasing the accuracy and speed of the process.” For more information about the software and a biogra- phy of the creator, visit www.WSoftSoftware.com or email Jim Williams at Sales@WSoftSoftware.com

WSoftSoftware has announced the impending release of a single-source integrated software suite that can increase the accuracy of a company’s AP and AR processing and increase disbursement options from two to five. The soft- ware gives companies a quicker way to send customers not only statements but copies of invoices and signed bill of lading/delivery receipt. One of the largest independent corrugated companies in the U.S. has been using this software for over 15 years, and it is now ready to be released to the corrugated indus- try and the general public. The AutoAP program allows a company’s vendors to email or FTP their invoices, which then gets imported into the AutoAP Program. This program then performs a three- way match to verify a PO was entered, the product was received, and matches the vendor’s invoice. Unmatched invoices go on a daily exception report that gets emailed to the user who will be required to fix the exception. By reducing the time it takes to process a company’s AP, the company has more ability to negotiate better terms with the vendor. The Lockbox program reduces the time it takes to ap- ply cash. This program imports your bank’s lockbox file, matches the payment to the customer’s invoice, then auto-

DS Smith Survey: Pandemic Triggers Embrace Of Sustainable Packaging A pandemic-induced surge in e-commerce has left shop- pers with more boxes than ever before, triggering a rush by consumers to embrace recycling and raising the de- mand for sustainable packaging. But while there’s more interest in sustainability – especially among millennials – many buyers say they’re frustrated by the amount of unre- cyclable material showing up and the lack of easy access to local recycling sites. Those are among the major findings of a national sur- vey by DS Smith, a leading paper and packaging company that focuses on creating innovative and sustainable pack- aging solutions. A previous DS Smith survey shows 44 percent of respondents report getting more deliveries during the

COVID-19 pandemic. The latest results validate DS Smith’s work in producing more sustainable products for its busi- ness customers. An overwhelming 83 percent of consum- ers surveyed say the packages they receive aren’t fully re- cyclable because they contain other materials like plastic or Styrofoam. Only 17 percent report getting all-recyclable packages. The survey, taken last month, revealed dramatic home and lifestyle changes, with 30- to 39-year-olds having the largest jump in recycling habits due to the pandemic. More than a quarter (26 percent) say they’re recycling more, fol- lowed by those age 18 to 29 doing more at 21 percent. “DS Smith provides sustainable packaging for its cus- tomers with the goal of leading the transition to the circular economy,” said Mark Ushpol, Managing Director of Pack- aging at DS Smith. “Recycling is an important piece of that process, and with the rapid growth of e-commerce putting more boxes into homes than ever before, it’s encouraging to see this shift in consumer behavior toward recycling more.”

DS Smith is working to combat the deluge of unrecyclable packaging plaguing consum- ers by using its Circular Design Principles, developed and launched last year alongside

the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, to eliminate waste from its packaging in the early design stages. These results also come after DS Smith’s recent announcement that it has embedded its pioneering Circular Design Metrics across all its packaging sites. In an industry first, DS Smith can now measure and quantify the sus- tainability performance of each of its packag- CONTINUED ON PAGE 28
