Jahrhunderts in Asien. EN A career spanning over five decades and more than two hundred projects has established Geof- frey Bawa (1919–2003) as one of the most influential architects of twentieth-century Asia. His work ranges from private homes and hotels to schools, factories, office buildings, and the Sri Lankan parliament building. Bawa combined modern architecture with vernacular building traditions, re- sponding to the natural environment as he integrated the local topology and ecology – plants, rocks, water features – into his works. The exhibition presents Bawa’s work through models, films, drawings, and personal documents from the collections of the Geoffrey Bawa Trust. The exhibition design by architect Lina Ghotmeh, together with photographs by Iwan Baan commissioned specially for the exhibition, offers a fresh perspective on Bawa – both as a great master of modernism and as a contemporary model for holistic architecture brimming with sensuality and visual power.

Verner Panton Form, Farbe, Raum 23.05.2026 – 09.05.2027, Vitra Schaudepot
EN He hung chairs from the ceiling and transformed interiors into colourful playgrounds; few design- ers have shaped design in the second half of the twentieth century as decisively as Verner Panton (1926–1998). To mark the 100th anniversary of the Danish designer and architect’s birth, the Vitra Design Museum is presenting a comprehensive exhibition of his work at the Vitra Schaudepot. »Verner Panton: Form, Colour, Space« illuminates Panton’s work across design periods, from iconic designs such as the Panton Chair, the Cone Chair, and the Flowerpot lamp to visionary living landscapes as well as rarely shown furniture and architectural projects. A walk-in reconstruction (edition 1/8) of the legendary Fantasy Landscape from 1970 invites visitors to immerse themselves in Panton’s sculptural, colour-saturated worlds.

»A space that makes you connect with nature puts you at ease.« EN Geoffrey Bawa, one of Asia’s most influen tial modern architects, created spaces where light, landscape, and architecture merge into a deeply sensory experience. For the retrospec tive at the Vitra Design Museum, exhibition cu rator Johan Deurell speaks with co-curator Shayari de Silva of the Geoffrey Bawa Trust about the atmosphere of Bawa’s buildings and the historical forces that shaped his work. Their conversation highlights an approach rooted in context, attuned to nature, and strikingly rele vant today, offering fresh insight into an archi tectural legacy that continues to inspire more responsible and imaginative ways of building.
The subtitle of our exhibition is »Architecture for the Senses«. When you think about Geoffrey Bawa’s work, what is the first image, feeling, or moment that comes to mind? Number 11, Geoffrey’s home in Colombo, served as the Trust’s office for several years. During the six years I worked there, I became fascinated by the way light moved through the house. Its log- gias, courtyards, and skylights act like a collec- tive sundial, shifting over the course of the day to highlight different spaces at different times. The house felt completely transformed, yet equally magical, whether in bright daylight orduring a monsoon downpour. Even though we occupied this relatively small house so often, the experi- ence felt special each time. The same is true of Lunuganga, perhaps even more so, and in fact, of all Bawa’s buildings, though I just speak here about the place I spent the most time in. When a space connects you to nature or natural ele- ments in this way, it situates you and puts you at ease. This is a key part of the singular appeal of Bawa’s work. Over your years at the Geoffrey Bawa Trust, researching and curating his archive as well as leading an oral history project, you must have formed ideas about »GB« the person? As I never met him personally, I rely on the recol- lections of others. The conversations I conducted with many of his colleagues, clients, and friends revealed that he had many facets: for some, an authority in architectural design; for others, a reliable friend and confidant who is deeply missed. At the same time, he was often reserved and private. I am particularly impressed by the clarity and precision of his writing, his ability to express a great deal in very few words, and his wonderful sense of humour.
Detailansicht des Dachs, Neues Parlament von Sri Lanka, Kotte, Sri Lanka, 2026
Could you briefly outline the context for Bawa’s work? Bawa worked during a very challenging period in Sri Lanka – his career starts in 1948, the year that the country gained independence from the British Empire. From 1953 onwards Sri Lanka had a string of insurgencies, riots and a civil war from 1983, which was ongoing when Bawa died in 2003. The socio-political and economic context of these events is layered, and while they are not the focus of the exhibition, we try to unpack the implications on architecture and design for Bawa. It’s very easy to exoticize or fetishize the sensual, low-cost, and local aspects of his work but these qualities were fundamentally a re- sponse to the reality he found himself in. With the exhibition we want to invite global au diences to discover or rediscover Bawa’s work. In your opinion, what are the key characteris tics of his work? Geoffrey Bawa’s buildings are deeply sensual and cinematic: in person, you are completely absorbed by their experience. There is modesty in the structures and finishes that are made of
readily available materials. That perception is then expanded on by the luxury of perfectly framed views, spaces filled with natural light, art, and objects that feel inseparable from the archi- tecture. The multi-faceted richness of this experi- ence is carefully calibrated in Bawa’s approach. His architecture’s response to site and embrace of nature are also key. Bawa was highly attuned to context in every sense: the topography, the climate, and the socio-economic conditions gov- erning a project. By understanding and respond- ing to these aspects of a project, Bawa found a way of building that endures, and continues to inspire more than two decades after his passing. What perspectives do you think visitors will gain through the exhibition? I hope visitors will understand that part of Bawa’s power lay in his ability to bring together collabo- rators across disciplines and draw on their strengths – creating architecture where the whole exceeds the sum of its parts. His work speaks to its time but also feels timeless.

Le sous-titre de notre exposition est « Architec ture for the Senses ».

Oktober / October / Octobre Barragán Lecture #6: Solitude is good company – Casa Majahua by Barragán TALK (EN) Guests: Ingrid Moye, Christoph Zeller, Nina Kirste, and Josef Grillmeier Thursday, 29 October 2026 6:30 pm, Christoph Merian Stiftung, Basel A lecture series presented in cooperation with the Barragan Foundation explores the work of Luis Barragán from various perspectives. This talk focuses on Casa Majahua, a holiday house built by Barragán in the 1950s. Situated on a remote stretch of Mexico’s Pacific coast, the dwelling was used only briefly before eventually falling into disrepair within its encroa- ching natural environment. The urgency of preserving this little-known part of the architect’s legacy led to the first comprehensive documen- tation of the house through the Architectural Association Summer School Programme, directed by the German- Mexican studio Zeller & Moye. Illustrated with archival and survey materials, their lecture traces the remains of Casa Majahua and reflects on strategies of reuse, repair and sustainable reactivation in the face of physical decay.

Preview Schlaf Ein paralleles Universum 20.03.2027 – 05.09.2027, Vitra Design Museum
EN In spring 2027, the Vitra Design Museum will explore the timeless and highly relevant subject of human sleep. Taking as its point of departure the ways in which sleep is shaped by cultural, design, economic, and technological forces the exhibition examines its role in contemporary society. How have artificial lighting and modern working environments transformed our sleeping habits? What impact do digitalisation and constant connectivity have today? And how can design improve sleep? Focusing on changing human sleep patterns, the evolution of beds and sleeping environments, and cultural ideas of the body, intimacy, and dreams, the show also casts a critical eye on the socio-po- litical conditions shaping our access to sleep and rest. Bringing together works from design, art, ar- chitecture, literature, and film with insights from sleep research, it offers a compelling perspective on that third of our lives we spend asleep—an essential yet still largely enigmatic realm.

EN Since June 2026, the »Water Garden«, located next to the Vitra Design Museum, has enhanced the Vitra Campus as part of the overall concept by the Belgian landscape architect Bas Smets. The water feature blends sensitively into the existing landscape and creates new spaces for tranquillity and encounter. In the pond, the poetic »The Three Graces« by Dutch designer Hella Jongerius draw attention. Along the path around the pond are the »Fish Bench« sculpture, made after an original by Balkrishna Doshi, and a »Maison Démontable 4x4« by Jean Prouvé. The »Water Garden« represents a biodiverse environment in which water, vegetation and art merge into an experience that sharpens awareness of the relationship between design and the environment.
