A heavy snowfall and an unplowed backcountry road add up to misfortune for the driver of heating oil truck trying to make a delivery in Alfred-Plantagenet Township in the middle of the day February 25. The driver tried to pull his truck over to let a small car get by and ended up toppling into the ditch because he could not tell where the snow-covered road ended and the edge of the ditch began. The trails were perfect, the riders were enthusiastic, and the organizers of the inaugural Snowmobile Ride for Autism are declaring the inaugual event a big success. “We’re ecstatic,” said Paul Taylor Sr., one of the event co-organizers, during a phone interview Sunday. “We were on target for what expected.” The February 26 event saw 50 riders head out for the trails at 9 a.m. from the starting point at the Place 1967 Restaurant in Plantagenet. Alberte Villeneuve-Sinclair, qui habite à Vars, a bravé la tempête de vendredi pour aller à une séance de dédicaces de l’ensemble de ses livres. Mais la tempête aura eu le dessus car presque personne ne s’est rendu à la librairie Le Coin du Livre, à Ottawa, pour rencon- trer cette auteure franco-ontarienne, grande passionnée de la vie, intéressée aux gens qu’elle rencontre et à leurs relations. Depuis 1990, année du lancement de son premier roman, Le jardin négligé , Alberte Villeneuve-Sinclair a fait bon nombre de présentations sur des sujets tels que l’abus physique et psychologique fait aux femmes et sur la santé mentale. Mais essentielle- ment, c’est le goût d’écrire du temps de son jeune âge qui a tout déclenché. «J’ai toujours eu le goût d’écrire. Très jeune, je suis allée à une école de campagne. J’avais beaucoup de temps libre parce que l’enseignante avait huit classes. En huitième année, j’ai participé au concours de français. On ne s’attendait pas à ce que je gagne, mais j’ai tout gagné, sauf la récitation.» Puis un jour, elle reçoit un cadeau qui, comme on pourrait dire, a changé sa vie. C’était Le Journal d’Anne Frank . «Pour moi ça été la découverte de ma vie! C’est à ce moment-là que j’ai commencé à écrire mon journal et j’ai toujours aimé l’écriture par la suite.» Retraitée après trente-deux ans d’ensei- gnement à Ottawa, Alberte Villeneuve-Sin- clair, née à Cumberland, a des intérêts allant de l’écriture à la peinture, de la psychologie à la spiritualité, de l’ésotérisme au paranor- mal, de l’horticulture à l’ornithologie. En 1990 elle a lancé son premier roman, Le jardin négligé, l’ouvrage qu’elle considère comme le plus important, puisqu’il est basé sur son expérience de vie. «Mon premier mariage a été extrêmement difficile, j’ai épousé un homme bipolaire. Mais dans

ce temps-là on en parlait pas, alors je ne savais pas dans quoi je m’embarquais. Ça été très difficile. Il a fini par se suicider. Il y a eu de la violence et avant de se suicider il a vidé tous les comptes. Sept ans plus tard, j’ai découvert où était allé l’argent. Ça m’a tellement bouleversé que je me suis dit, ok, je vais écrire!» En 2005, la version anglaise, The Neglected Garden , a été publiée chez Baico, au grand plaisir des lecteurs anglophones. En 2007, l’autrice a publié, Une prière pour Hélène , avec Le Jardin négligé . Alberte Villeneuve-Sinclair a dédie les deux ou- vrages... «à toutes les femmes mal aimées qui souffrent encore en secret, à toutes les femmes libérées qui ont eu le courage de s’en sortir et à toutes celles qui se préparent à vivre une relation amoureuse avec un homme, ainsi qu’aux hommes soucieux de bien aimer la femme de leur vie. » Elle est aussi très fière de son premier livre jeunesse, né de l’imaginaire de six filles de l’École élémentaire catholique

Muses from the Blue Shack est une compilation de plusieurs articles écrits durant plusieurs années. « Mes lecteurs aiment beaucoup mes articles, alors je continue de faire ça et j’aimerais lancer un second Muses from the Blue Shack . Mais la pandémie m’aura forcé à attendre puisque des amies qui ont lancé des livres durant cette pandémie n’ont eu que de piètres résultats. Il n’y a pas de roman dans ses projets pour le moment. Enfin presque pas. « J’ai déjà commencé quelque chose qui s’appe- lait, L’homme engagé de mon père raconte Alberte Villeneuve-Sinclair . J’ai été élevé sur une ferme et moi je travaillais dans les champs. J’étais très habile avec la machi- nerie, mais je n’ai jamais fini ce roman. Ce serait là un beau projet si le goût me revenait. »

The Township of Alfred and Plantagenet has converted Larocque Woods into a free recreational trail for the public. The municipality acquired the forest behind its water tower in 2021, and now it’s open to the public as the municipality’s first multi-use outdoor trail space. Over three kilometres of trails criss-cross the area for various summer and winter activities, inclu- ding hiking, biking, snowshoeing, skiing. “It is now possible to ski and hike in the forest near Larocque Park,” said Manon Besner, Chair of the Larocque Woods Advi- sory Committee. “For a few months now, an advisory committee has been working on the development of the Larocque Woods. It is with gratitude to the members of this committee, Mr. Dominic Côté, the people who participated in the fall clean-up and the employees of the Parks and Recreation Department of the municipality of Alfred & Plantagenet that it is now possible to enjoy these trails safely as a family. So bundle up and come enjoy the great outdoors at Larocque Woods. Come and play outside this winter.” To celebrate, the Larocque Woods Advi- sory Committee, the Alfred 150 Committee, and the Alfred Optimist Club hosted a Family Day outing on February 21. They led a walk through the woods with hot chocolate and coffee, and the skate shack was open for people to warm up in. In addition, several prize draws were held throughout the day featuring prizes donated by the Optimist Club. “The acquisition of the college forest, now better known as the Larocque Woods, by the municipality is a very important investment to enhance the identity of the residents of the township and their sense of belonging to it,” said Ken St-Denis, parks and recreation director. “It is with passion and pride that the Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with the community, plans to develop this prime site over the next five

Like Gatineau, for instance, is really solid defensively, and the Cougars have prolific scorers. But we’re ready to face any team, and they will have to adjust to the way we play; not the other way around. We are the best team in the league, and we want to set the tone for the next round.” The Castors will face the Morrisburg Lions in round two if the underdog manages to upset the South Grenville Rangers and take the series on Wednesday. The Clarence Creek Castors are now preparing for the second round of the playoffs in the NCJHL, after they defea- ted the Metcalfe Jets 4-3 last Friday to sweep the series. After taking the first two games convin- cingly by crushing the Jets 6-0 and 5-1 last week, their opponents put up more of a fight on Friday as they managed to keep up with the Castors, but the Clarence Creek team managed to hold on to the lead to win the game 4-3 and sweep the series. Nikolas Guindon and Jacob Servant each notched a goal and a helper, Connor Head-Smith had two assists, Cedrik Bisson and Alex Ross scored a goal apiece, and Ryan Carroll, Jordan Croll-Stevenson, Martin Cayden and Zachary Payer all had assists in the victory against the Jets.
