Three Important Takeaways Toward Reducing Turnover BY MIKE JACQUART Having the specific skills for a particular job is important, but even the most qualified job applicant may not pan out if there is a poor “fit” be- tween the position and the workplace. Whether one wants to call it job

Resolute Forest Products To Sell Thunder Bay Paper Mill Montreal, Quebec based Resolute Forest Products Inc., a subsidiary of Domtar Corpora- tion and a part of the Paper Excellence Group, announced that it has entered into an asset purchase agreement to sell its Thunder Bay (Ontario) pulp and paper mill to an affiliate of Atlas Holdings. The transaction, expected to close in the second half of the year, is subject to the satis- faction or waiver of closing conditions, includ- ing obtaining required regulatory approvals. Resolute will continue to operate its saw- mills and woodlands operations in Northwest- ern Ontario. At the closing of the transaction, the parties will enter into certain ancillary agreements, including a long-term woodchip and biomass supply agreement pursuant to which Resolute will continue to provide chips and biomass to the Thunder Bay mill. "The mill is an exceptional asset," said Remi G. Lalonde, Resolute's President and Chief Ex- ecutive Officer. "I am confident that the dedi- cated and talented team in Thunder Bay will have a prosperous future, and I sincerely wish them all the best." or corporate culture, work environment, or “fit,” it’s not just what you do for a living, but also where you work that can play a strong role in success. And when someone suffers from a mental health challenge such as depression or an anxiety disorder, the right “fit” becomes even more important and potentially costly for the employer if overlooked. Take for example the case of Stanley Stringer. Stanley lost a number of jobs during his 35-year career as a reporter, writer, and editor. He was con- vinced that a poor fit between his personality and a fast-paced work environment — which depression and anxiety issues exacerbated — played a significant role in his terminations. Stanley is far from alone. According to Forbes, untreated depres- sion among employees cost employers $44 billion annually in lost workdays. This article will explain three main takeaways for managers to help ensure better “fits” for the employee and for management. 1. Never underestimate how many employees are in the wrong job. Most employees seen by the manager of a corporate mental health program came in to see them because they were unhappy at work. CONTINUED ON PAGE 26

Colbert Packaging Teaches Students About Life Cycle Of Trees, Sustainable Packaging About 135 second-grade students from Trevor, Wisconsin, and Mishawa- ka, Indiana, celebrated Earth Week by learning about the cycle of life from trees to paper and back to trees. The educational outreach program was presented by corporate neighbor and Kenosha, Wisconsin based Colbert Packaging.

The interactive session is dubbed TICCIT for, "Trees into Cartons, Car- tons into Trees." Created by the Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC), of which Colbert Packaging is a member, the program teaches young learn- ers about the role trees play in the environment and our circular econ- omy. The program teaches the importance of recognizing sustainable packaging and supporting the recyclability of paper-based packaging. The visual presentation was topped off with a hands-on session where students were invited to prepare and take home their very own tree sap- ling in a paperboard planter. This marks the sixth year of Colbert's involvement in TICCIT, and the first year of its company-wide participation, dispatching both Kenosha and Elkhart teams to conduct the program locally. Students and teachers participated with great enthusiasm. Trevor-Wilmot Elementary Second Grade Teacher Mary Fenske said, "We're grateful to Colbert for such a wonderful presentation and the gift of all the trees. The kids really en- joyed the whole program!" Mishawaka's Bittersweet Elementary Principal Shonda Masterson said the 75 second graders were very receptive. "Bit- tersweet students loved learning about ways to help our environment, facts about trees, and being good stewards. Students were so eager to get home and plant their trees!" "We are delighted to have the opportunity to share the importance of environmental stewardship with an enthusiastic audience of local stu- dents," said Colbert Marketing Manager Wanda Speer. Colbert's commitment to sustainability includes supporting renewable energy through its investment in Wind RECs, working toward zero man- ufacturing waste to landfill, and partnering with EcoVadis (ecovadis.com) and its business sustainability ratings platform, with access to bench- marks and performance improvement tools. The TICCIT program was launched by the PPC in 2010 and is avail- able to schools, organizations, home schools and sponsors (like Colbert) CONTINUED ON PAGE 14 Second graders from Wisconsin and Indiana learn about the TICCIT program 'Trees Into Cartons, Cartons Into Trees' program.

NAM: A Matchmaking Service For The Manufacturing Supply Chain The NAM is a meeting place like no other, where manufac- turers of all sizes and sectors gather to make the industry stronger. Recently, along with its partner CONNEX Market- place, it invited manufacturing leaders to D.C. for high-lev- el discussions about supply chain challenges. This meeting came at an exciting time for CONNEX. Formerly known as Manufacturers Marketplace, the pro- gram pivoted in 2022 to combine state-specific installa- tions with the national platform and become a more pow- erful SaaS. Connecticut launched its own version of the CONNEX platform back in February, thanks to the support of the CBIA (a state business association and NAM partner) and

the state’s chief manufacturing officer, Paul Lavoie—who discussed some early success stories at the D.C. event. “In the first two weeks, more than 200 companies joined, significantly more than the state’s most optimis- tic projections,” according to a Hartford Business Journal piece—and Lavoie told the paper he expects signups to blow past 750 in the first year.

Kentucky is also getting in on the action. The Kentucky Association of Manufactur- ers (also an NAM state partner) recently launched its own CONNEX Marketplace installation, which was announced by the governor. KAM CEO Frank Jemley also came to D.C. for the meeting, bringing his own success stories. The leaders in D.C. focused on how manufacturers can improve security and re- siliency in the supply chain. They also dis- cussed how local and state governments can ease supply chain challenges for busi- nesses. As the participants observed, the key challenge is “illuminating risk” inside the supply chain, so that companies know what they’re facing. They discussed the many types of risks involved in supply chains, in- cluding cybersecurity, financial, business continuity, capacity and more. CONNEX is working to integrate technol- ogy that will identify and highlight potential risks in a company’s specific supply chain. The supply chain functions (or doesn’t) on the strength of manufacturers’ cooper- ation, from the largest companies to their smallest suppliers. Competition is not com- pany vs. company, but supply chain vs. sup- ply chain, the participants agreed. Small manufacturers might benefit from a coach or guide to walk through the sourc- ing process so they understand how to re- main resilient and competitive, one attend- ee recommended. CONNEX is working on a playbook that entities such as manufacturing extension partnerships can use to help coach SMMs through the procurement process. Norman Smith Ent. Invests In Acme Corrugated Wax-Coated Containers Paulsboro, New Jersey based Norman Smith Enterprises, Inc., a provider of floral and home décor, announced an in- vestment in Acme Corrugated Box’s wax-coated contain- ers. For years, the wholesaler shipped products contain- ing plants, soil, and water in wax-coated boxes sourced from China. Norman Smith Enterprises sold China-sourced packaging as well, primarily to florists and nurseries in need of moisture-safe shipping boxes. In 2019, however, the cost of shipping the wax-coat- ed containers from overseas ballooned. Lead times were becoming longer and they needed a cost effective, mois- ture-safe packaging product fast. They asked Acme Corrugated about wax-coated con- tainers similar to what they’d previously sourced from Chi- na and were introduced to the proprietary AcmeGUARD. Acme Corrugated Box began experimenting with mois- ture-resistant materials in 2015. They enlisted a long-term supplier to engineer a novel coated paper that stood up to internal testing in their Pennsylvania headquarters. Norman Smith Enterprises agreed to give AcmeGUARD a try. The Acme Corrugated Box team replicated the de- sign of the shipping boxes that they had been receiving from China, simply swapping wax-coated material for Ac- meGUARD.

AcmeGUARD proved to be a successful alternative to the overseas product immediately. Today, Norman Smith Enterprises customers continue to receive moist products without issue; the company’s

florist and nursery clients have also happily adopted AcmeGUARD. The price of the higher-quality boxes has been negated by Ac- meGUARD’s domestic pro- duction, which minimizes shipping costs. “We have worked with Acme Corrugated Box Company for approxi- mately eight years now and have had nothing but a great experience,” says

Alan Buckley, President of Norman Smith Enterprises. “When we needed water-resistant packaging they came through with AcmeGUARD, which delivers on every front. “I’d like to add that communication and delivery have always been stellar and on time. Acme Corrugated Box is easy to work with and saves me a lot of time, as I don’t have to review every step. "My company has been very satisfied with the solution provided for our corrugated box needs and highly recom- mend it.”

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

Domtar Celebrates Grand Reopening Of Kingsport Mill

The Perfect Combo Get Peak Performance From Your Equipment with Matched Component Sets

Fort Mill, South Carolina based Domtar announced the grand reopening celebration at the Kingsport Mill attend- ed by executives, employees, state and local dignitaries. The event marked the completion of the mill’s conver- sion into the first 100 percent recycled containerboard fa- cility. The two-year project transformed the mill’s uncoat- ed freesheet paper machine into the second-largest 100 percent-recycled containerboard machine in North Amer- ica, capable of producing approximately 600,000 tons of high-quality recycled linerboard and corrugated medium annually. “Our machine is one of the most sophisticated and highly automated machines in North America,” says Mill Manager Troy Wilson. “Its state-of-the-art technology is enabling us to provide our customers a high-quality, con- sistent product thanks to a highly controllable, stable and repeatable process.”

The mill reopened in January and is now the largest recycled manufacturer in the state of Tennessee. “We’re building on our 175-year legacy as a fiber inno- vator by entering the packaging business. It’s a large and growing market, and we’re very excited by the customer response we’ve received," said Steve Henry, Domtar Exec- utive Vice President and CEO. Domtar said they completed the project safely with on- site construction crews at the mill surpassing 2.5 million hours without a lost-time incident during the two-year con- version. The safety streak started when the project began in the fall of 2020. “Throughout the project, we did everything we could to show our contract support personnel that we cared about them,” says Charlie Floyd, Vice President of Strategic Cap- ital Projects for Domtar’s packaging business. “Our only priority was ensuring they would return home to their fam- ilies safely. Nothing we do is more important than keeping our people safe.” Kingsport Mayor Pat Shull said the project was made possible thanks to a great partnership between Domtar and community leaders. A grand reopening of Domtar's Kingsport Mill was celebrated on May 25, 2023.

Reducing Turnover (CONT’D FROM PAGE 1)

There were some slower, less stressful and quieter work environments at this firm, but when Stanley talked to HR about working elsewhere, he was told the company was not in the habit of providing “lateral transfers.” In other words, the new job had to be a promotion, not one that involved similar work. As a result of “staying put,” Stanley was terminated less than a year later, and the company

“Nine times out of ten, their unhappiness was due to a very poor fit between the employee’s personality and the work environment,” wrote Marina London in Climbing out of Darkness: A Personal Journey into Mental Wellness. Marina found herself repeatedly recommending those em- ployees look for a more suitable position. At a time when recruiting new hires is more competitive than ever, what company can afford excessive turnover, especially when it could have been avoided? While perfor- mance issues are obvious cause for concern, many signs of unhappy workers are more subtle. They include: • Becoming more withdrawn socially; • Lacking energy and motivation; • More easily distracted or stressed; • More instances of anger than in the past; and/or • Showing changes in outward appearance. 2. Don’t overlook potential solutions. Every workplace has interruptions, but they were endless at one company our example Stanley worked at, a firm that he said was an otherwise pleasant place to work. The problem was it was a little too exuberant for him. Multitudes of coworkers would stop by his cubicle area each day. “Cubicles were in close proximity, and with concentration issues, the con- tinual disturbances were very difficult to cope with.” As Marina wrote, “When you are depressed, everything is an effort. That includes socializing.”

lost an otherwise punctual, hardworking employee be- cause they did not bend their rules and move him else- where in the organization. 3. Take the time to help ensure a good “match” from the start. Determining whether the person can do the job is an important part of any job interview, but too often the discussion ends there. As in our example a reporter good at writing is not enough. If the individual is skilled at writing

in-depth stories, he will be a poor fit at a newspaper where spontaneity to cover fires and accidents is stressed over lengthier essays. If the position requires working various work schedules, but the individual prefers steady, regular hours, the job is not likely to work out. Probing questions that go beyond the nuts and bolts of a resume or appli- cation can be very revealing. For starters, “What types of jobs have you enjoyed the most?” “The least?” Taking ex- tra time to screen an applicant is time well spent. In conclusion, it’s true there is no perfect job. That said, when it comes to selecting a work environment, the more you know who you are, the better choices you can make. But job “fit” remains a two-way street. It is still vital for an employer to learn the person’s wants and needs, strengths, and weaknesses. Staff attrition is inevitable, but better understanding of job culture will go a long way to- ward reducing turnover. AF&PA Opposes Passage Of Drafted EPR Bills For New York

Board Converting NEWS INTERNET DIRECTORY

Activity related to the New York state EPR for paper and packaging bills has increased with just a few weeks re- maining in session. In response, AF&PA is activating some of its advocacy resources to maximize impact and encour- age members with resources in New York to do the same. AF&PA opposes the passage of any of the NY EPR bills as currently drafted due to their impact on the paper in- dustry. Additionally, the state is funding a statewide needs assessment and we believe it would be shortsighted to pass an EPR bill before that process is complete. AF&PA has activated a grassroots alert. If you are not already signed up for AF&PA grassroots alerts, you can sign up here by visiting www.afandpa.org, whiere you can also read and download outreach materials, including: • Updated Memo in Opposition • Updated talking points (do not give to legislators) • New York EPR Leave-behind Outreach Targets include member facility represen- tatives and champions and Environmental Conservation Committee members in the Senate and Assembly. AF&PA is also developing social media to complement our out- reach efforts. There are four different bills related to EPR under con- sideration in New York: • S.4246/A.5322: Enacts the “Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act” (companion to AB 5322) Includes paper and packaging- with packaging defi- nition so broad it could be construed to include even wood pallets. Sets requirements for recovery rate, re- cycling rate, source reduction, and material-specific postconsumer recycled content (PCR) rate. • S.1064: Establishes an Extended Producer Responsibil- ity Program For Packaging:Printing papers not includ- ed. Onerous labeling requirements and toxic chemicals can be basis for packaging bans or deeming not-recy- clable. Sets requirements for non-reusable packaging reduction rate and PCR rate. • S.6540: Establishes an Extended Producer Responsi- bility Program For Designated Products: State agency to decide what products have individual EPR programs on an annual basis and craft plans based on products and key factors listed in bill. AF&PA members make about 87 percent of the pulp, paper, paper-based packaging and tissue products made in the U.S. Its members are small, medium and large com- panies in rural and urban communities across the country and are dedicated to responsible manufacturing with re- newable and recyclable resources. AF&PA members are also committed to sustainable forestry. Sourcing fiber from sustainable forests helps ensure America’s forests are continuously replanted and preserved for future genera- tions.
