BLUE GOLD GUIDE
LIVING AT UNK Living in a residence hall community is a great way to build connections and become a campus leader. Here are some suggestions to try in the first couple weeks: 1. Go to Tuesday Night Events in the halls known as Community Councils. We come together every Tuesday at 8:00 pm in the residence halls to engage in activities within the first year buildings. 2. Join the Community Council Exec Board to plan activities for your community and make new friends. 3. Run for Floor President: Each floor elects a president in the first few weeks of classes. Floor president helps build community in the hall, and they are invited to the Residence Hall Association meeting every Monday at 5:30 pm in the Mantor Hall Conference Room to give feedback to Residence Life leadership.
RESIDENCE LIFE ENCOURAGES STUDENT GROWTH THROUGH:
PERSONAL GROWTH ■ Describe how to integrate strategies for well-being into their regular routines. ■ Discuss strategies for overcoming adversity. ■ Describe the impact of their choices on others.
PROFESSIONAL GROWTH ■ Describe strategies for effective communication. ■ Discuss how to engage in conflict in a healthy manner.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
■ Discuss strategies to develop healthy relationships. ■ Communicate effectively across differences. ■ Contribute toward more inclusive communities. ■ Provide leadership to better their communities.

BLUE GOLD GUIDE
ENJOYING YOUR HALL ENVIRONMENT Students have a role in keeping our hall communities running smoothly. Thus, we encourage residents to understand their rights and responsibilities as a student. In living with us, we work with you to have an environment that is safe from harm,
but we need you to make sure to look through the Student’s Rights & Responsibilities on our website. Here are a few highlights of the responsibilities we frequently see students not fully understand:
The laundry fee is part of your residence hall fees, so take advantage of the 24 hour, unlimited access to your area’s facility. Please use High Efficiency detergent in the machines to avoid soap build up. Fire Safety is incredibly important, thus we do not allow candles, tobacco, vaping in the halls. We restrict microwaves and kitchen appliance usage to common area kitchens. Your trash is your responsibility to get to the dumpsters located outside the building. Do not use common area trashcans to dump your belongings.
UNK is a dry campus. We do not allow alcohol in our traditional residence halls, regardless of age.
Room cleanliness is important to your health and the health of others in the community. We require your room to be clean and orderly. Students are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of their bathroom, please clean up personal messes in common areas. Courtesy hours are in effect 24 hours, 7 days a week. All residents and their guests are expected to keep their noise to a level that does not interfere with others.
NAVIGATING A ROOMMATE
SAFETY & SECURITY
We know living with a new person comes with challenges and new experiences. •Complete your roommate agreement in your first two weeks of college with your RA •Your RA can offer tips on handling concerns before they turn into huge conflicts •Room Changes are not allowed during the first few weeks of each semester so finding a way to communicate is important •Get ahead of the difficulty and communicate with your Residence Hall Coordinator if the conflict is becoming too difficult to manage •NOTE: Room assignments cannot be made or altered due to any person’s protected status which includes race, color, sexual expression, religion, handicap, ethnicity, or national origin
•Students are responsible for locking their room, even if going down the hall, while sleeping, or leaving the room unattended •Exterior Doors and corridor hallways are locked 24 hours a day •Halls are only accessible using your Student ID •Exterior and hallway doors may not be propped open
LOCKOUT OR LOST KEYS
•If you are locked out of your room, visit your front desk first during hours of operation •If after hours, on a weekend, or during a break period – call you RA ON DUTY •If you have lost your room key, mailbox key, or student ID – inform your RHC or front desk immediately •If after hours, on a weekend, or during a break period – call your RA ON DUTY or the Residence Life Office at 308-865-8519 during business hours.
What will you do to set up a successful routine?
What will you do be a good roommate?
What leadership experience will you join your first year?

STUDENT HEALTH & COUNSELING (SHC)
Conveniently located, SHC is inside the Memorial Student Affairs Building (MSAB) in the middle of UNK’s campus. The four offices under SHC are Student Health, Counseling, Loper Mental Health Outreach and Health Promotion office STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES: Student Health is an on-campus, primary medical care clinic for students. The clinic is located in the Memorial Student Affairs Building (MSAB #184) staffed by full and part-time fully licensed and qualified nurse practitioners and registered nurses. On-campus students have automatic access to Student Health through paid fees. Any additional costs are nominal and always discussed. Some of the services offered:
•Evaluating and treating a wide variety of physical and mental health concerns •Minor procedures (simple sutures, removal of ingrown toenail, wound care, nexplanon insertion, etc.)
•Physicals - This includes general wellness, well-woman (including birth control and/or pap smears as needed), sports and study abroad physicals. •Prescriptions and medication management
•Basic laboratory services •Allergy injections •Testing and treating sexually transmitted infections
•Crutch rental • Vaccinations
If you have any health-related concerns, Student Health is an excellent place to start. If your needs exceed what Student Health can provide, they’ll gladly point you in the right direction and help guide you to a proper referral.
VACCINATIONS: UNK requires that all students born after 1956 must provide the month, day, and year of two MMR (mumps, measles [rubeola], and rubella) vaccinations. Students may also prove immunity by presenting a rubeola and mumps antibody titer test result or documentation of physician-diagnosed rubeola and mumps disease. Students must be in compliance with these requirements or they will not be permitted to register for classes. MENINGITIS AND INFLUENZA: The meningococcal and flu vaccines are not a UNK health requirement, however, Nebraska state law requires postsecondary institutions to provide students and parents with information related to meningococcal disease. UNK does strongly recommend students be vaccinated, especially those living in UNK housing. For more information on meningococcal disease and the dangers of meningitis, which the vaccine helps prevent, please visit these links: https://www.cdc.gov/meningococcal/index.html and https://www.cdc.gov/meningitis/index.html .
ELIGIBILITY FOR STUDENT HEALTH & COUNSELING SERVICES: All students enrolled in any on-campus credit hours have automatic access to SHC services funded through their student fees. Those taking all credit hours online can choose to opt-in for access. Students are required to present a photo ID to access the services of Student Health & Counseling.

Army ROTC is one of the best leadership courses in the country and is part of your college curriculum. ARMY ROTC
WHAT IS ROTC? The UNK Army ROTC Program is an elective curriculum you take along with your college classes. It gives you the tools, training, and experiences that will help you succeed in any competitive environment. Along with great leadership training, Army ROTC can pay for your college tuition. Because Army ROTC is an elective, you can participate your freshman and sophomore years without any obligation to join the Army. You will have a normal college experience like everyone else on campus. When you complete the ROTC program, you’ll have the transferable leadership skills of a U.S. Army Officer, as well as a guaranteed part-time or a full-time job after graduation and commissioning.

ACADEMIC ADVISING
MEMORIAL STUDENT AFFAIRS BUILDING (MSAB)
HOW CAN I BE A GOOD ADVISEE? Communicate – You can find your academic advisor’s name and contact information on your home screen in MyBlue. We encourage you to reach out to your advisor to introduce yourself early in your first semester. Developing a strong relationship with your advisor can support your academic and career development. Prepare – Before your regular academic advising appointment, you should become familiar with your degree requirements by looking through your Degree Audit in MyBlue (in the Academics section).
In the Academic Advising & Career Development Office, we work with students at every step of their academic career. We are here for students who are unsure about their major or curious how they could be successful in a different major. We have five professional advisors that are excited to help you in your academic and career development.
FRESHMAN CHECK-IN MEETING (REQUIRED)
As a first-time freshman, you have an opportunity to talk with one of our advisors early in the fall semester for your mandatory freshman check-in meeting. The purpose of this meeting is to address any issues you’re having early on before they become real problems, as well as to help you understand your role in the academic advising process. You’ll get an email to your UNK emaill when it’s time to schedule this meeting and remove the hold from your MyBlue account (pictured below). We look forward to meeting with you!
FOCUS 2 is your pathway to explore various occupations and majors at UNK. There are five different career/major exploration assessments that are designed to help students explore majors and occupations. You can access the FOCUS 2 at http://bit.ly/FindAMajor and then schedule a meeting with an Academic & Career advisor anytime to discuss the results.
HOLD First-time Freshman are required to meet with the Academic Advising & Career Development Office. Call 308.865.8501 with any questions.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT
HANDSHAKE Handshake is the career development resource that allows you to search for both on-campus and off-campus jobs and internships during your time in school and upon graduation. You can also find information about on-campus career events, build your profile to connect with potential employers, and find work-study or campus jobs.
You already have an account created; just go to unk.joinhandshake.com and log-in with your username and password.
We look forward to seeing you at the next CAREER & INTERNSHIP FAIR!
RÉSUMÉ It’s never too early to work on your résumé. Internship opportunities may begin to arise as soon as next summer. Visit our office to learn about how to tailor your résumé to stand out from others.
One great résumé tip is to add every experience into your Handshake profile so when it comes time to build your résumé you can spend more time formatting it rather than writing it. Advisors in the Academic Advising & Career Development Office are always here to help you with this. You can also find some great information here: http://bit.ly/ResumeTipsUNK . THE BIG INTERVIEW Interviewing is perhaps the most important and intimidating aspect of the job search process. Get a head start on preparing for job interviews by visiting unk.biginterview. com . This site allows students to practice their interview skills online, and it’s full of great interview advice.
CAREER FAIR WHY WOULD A FRESHMAN GO TO A CAREER FAIR? When you attend a career fair, you build your personal brand by networking with employers. With many jobs being publicized through word of mouth, these connections can lead to volunteer, internship, or career opportunities. Also, practice makes perfect. By attending early on, you can become more confident when talking with employers and graduate schools. “Each time I attend, I think ‘I’m not really going to have much to say.’ But my last one-on-one meeting was an awesome discussion that made me consider career opportunities I hadn’t thought of before.” - Sarah, Biology Major “Was a great experience and gave me better ideas of where my future can go.” - Mandi, Interior and Product Design Major “The Career Fair is a great experience for students to meet with potential employers. It also allows students to practice professional communication and professional readiness prior to graduation.” - Marissa, Agribusiness Major
