CLIMATE SOLUTIONS FOR RETAIL
2-3

The retail environment is particularly demanding for climate control. Open entrances welcome customers but invite heat loss; freezers and fridges generate humidity and raise temperatures; wall space is consumed by displays and fixtures. And throughout it all, the comfort of customers and staff directly impacts how long people stay and how much they spend.
2-3

Biddle has many years of experience delivering quiet, energy-efficient and highly reliable climate solutions across all types of retail environment. From supermarkets to high-street boutiques, outlet stores to shopping centres, Biddle’s project-focused approach and flexible product range means we create a tailor-made solution for any retail project, whether new-build or refurbishment.
2-3

REGULATION
2-3

Retail environments are subject to the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, requiring employers to provide a reasonable indoor temperature for staff. Building Regulations Approved Document F, Volume 2 (enforced June 2022) sets ventilation requirements for non-domestic buildings including retail, mandating adequate fresh air supply and, in new builds, continuous CO₂ monitoring. Energy systems above 12kW cooling capacity must be regularly inspected under the Energy Performance of Buildings Regulations 2012.
2-3

CUSTOM CLIMATE CONTROL – DESIGNED AROUND STORES
2-3

No two projects are alike. By working alongside our customers throughout, incorporating our decades of climate control knowledge and expertise, Biddle deliver solutions that match the exacting requirements of every retail space.
2-3

CLIMATE SEPARATION
2-3

Biddle's range of climate separation solutions make it possible to optimise the separation of climate zones by controlling temperatures in doorways. Combining open doors with customer comfort inside the retail environment is no longer an issue. Advanced Biddle control options continuously achieve ideal climate separation with a minimum of effort. Energy savings are maximised by separation efficiency between conditioned and atmospheric environments, which can be as high as 94%.

CASE STUDY
4-5

DELHAIZE
4-5

Delhaize is one of Europe's most environmentally progressive retailers. Having reduced CO₂ emissions by 44% since 2008, converted all stores to LED lighting and committed to carbon neutrality, the Belgian supermarket group takes sustainability seriously at every level.
4-5

When Delhaize opened a new supermarket in Denderleeuw, Flanders, it chose a CO₂ refrigeration system with heat recovery as its primary energy source. The challenge was to use the waste heat generated by that system to deliver comfortable, efficient heating and cooling throughout the store — at relatively low flow temperatures of 45°C to 50°C for heating and 7°C for cooling.
4-5

SOLUTION
4-5

Biddle's solution combined SR Comfort Air Curtains with Comfort Circle Cassette Units. The SR air curtains, integrate directly into the store's heat recovery system and create an effective climate barrier at the entrance — keeping warm air in during winter and hot, humid air out during summer. Biddle's combined technologies work together to continuously optimise air curtain performance, adjusting outlet temperature, airflow width and velocity in real time. Furthermore, Comfort Circle Cassette Units, installed discreetly within the suspended ceiling, deliver even, draught-free heating and cooling across the sales floor using the same recovered heat source.
4-5

RESULT
4-5

The result is a complete, integrated climate system that supports Delhaize's sustainability goals without compromising on customer comfort — proof that an open door and an energy-efficient store can coexist perfectly.
4-5

AIR CURTAIN SOLUTIONS
4-5

Biddle's air curtains reduce the amount of warm air that escapes from the building and conditions incoming air before it enters, maintaining a constant, comfortable temperature inside the store while reducing energy consumption and heating costs.

4-5

AIR CURTAIN TECHNOLOGY
6-7

i-SENSE
6-7

The patented i-sense infrared technology carefully scans the environment around the doorway collecting information on indoor and outdoor temperatures by measuring the exact temperature at floor level. In addition, the i-sense detects when the door is closed.
6-7

The i-sense (1) collects temperatures from several points both from inside and outside the doorway (2&3), whilst a sensor in the return air measures room temperature (4).
6-7

EXAMPLE OF I-SENSE IMPACT
6-7

The graph illustrates how the outdoor and indoor temperatures are measured using i-sense. As demonstrated, the sensor located on the outside of the doorway estimates an outdoor temperature of 9 °C (green line) whilst, i-sense sensor in the doorway provides a reading of 4 to 5 °C (purple line). This provides the evidence of accuracy readings of climate conditions in the doorway measured by Biddle technology.
6-7

CHIPS
6-7

CHIPS (Corrective Heating and Impulse Prediction System) technology automatically adjusts discharge velocity, air volume, discharge temperature and heat output. Outside, return air and discharge temperature sensors (i-Sense) are used to determine how much heat is required and Biddle’s control algorithm ‘translates’ the data into the strength required, removing the need for users to continually adjust settings. An air curtain with traditional control has heat and fan speed linked to one another: when the fan speed increases heat output increases.
6-7

RETAIL | AIR CURTAINS
6-7

RECTIFIER
6-7

Rectifier technology creates excellent downward penetration of the air stream, making it perfect for applications where the door height is greater than the air curtain width, preventing thermal conduction. The laminar air stream reaches the floor at a much lower air speed, preventing the air from colliding with the floor and resulting in efficient use of heat energy. The rectifier transforms the air turbulence caused by the fans into a laminar air stream, ensuring that the air curtain's warmth benefits the indoor climate. This prevents large air displacement, achieving optimal climate separation efficiency while using less energy.
6-7

CONTROLLED AIR STRENGTH
6-7

The Controlled Air strength technology is paired with the rectifier to create adaptable discharge width, which can be tailored to meet the specific climatic conditions of any given doorway. With six different settings to choose from, the air valve automatically adjusts the discharge width to optimise climate separation efficiency. As a result, the air volume and discharge velocity increase only as much as is necessary to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature while reducing energy consumption.

SR AIR CURTAIN
8-9

Biddle's flagship air curtain has been developed to deliver greater comfort than a conventional air curtain while providing considerable energy savings. The i-Sense and CHIPS technologies work in tandem to constantly measure the temperature across the entire threshold and automatically adjust velocity, volume and temperature of air output. The result is a genuinely effective climate barrier that uses significantly less energy than comparable products.
8-9

AUTOMATIC CONTROL
8-9

The SR has six settings selectable manually via an intelligent touchpad or automatically through the building management system. Each setting delivers a carefully controlled combination of discharge air volume, air temperature and air velocity — maintaining a comfortable climate regardless of outside conditions or footfall levels. Timer clocks, door contact switches and room thermostats can all be integrated into the control strategy.
8-9

BENEFITS
8-9

Prevents escape of conditioned climate — summer and winter
8-9

BMS integration via Modbus and BACnet
8-9

Keeps out cold draughts, pollutants, insects and fumes

Cold Storage Solutions
12-13

For food retailers, supermarkets and any business with chilled or frozen storage, maintaining the integrity of the cold store is critical for product quality, food safety compliance and operating costs. Every time a cold store door is opened, warm, humid air rushes in, increasing the load on refrigeration equipment and triggering costly defrost cycles.
12-13

HUMIDITY CONTROL
12-13

Humidity is a key challenge. By preventing warm air ingress, the cold store air curtains directly reduce humidity, improving both operational safety and energy efficiency. This is a significant benefit for supermarkets, food distribution centres and any retail operation with chilled or frozen storage.
12-13

BENEFITS
12-13

Fewer defrost cycles means lower energy consumption, longer equipment life and reduced maintenance costs. Product quality is also protected, as consistent cold store temperatures prevent the partial thaw-refreeze cycles that compromise food safety and freshness.
12-13

12-13

IsolAir2
12-13

The IsolAir2 has been specifically designed for chilled room and cold store applications in retail environments. Installed above the cold store entrance, it creates a powerful air barrier that prevents warm, humid ambient air from entering the cold zone — dramatically reducing temperature fluctuations inside the store and reducing the frequency of energy-intensive defrost cycles. No heat is emitted from the IsolAir2, reducing energy use from the air curtain and means no latent heat from the equipment enters the cold store.
12-13

IndAC2
12-13

Our IndAC2 air curtains are designed to help industrial buildings, warehouses, and distribution centres maintain a comfortable indoor climate, even if doors need to be left open for extended periods of time. Air curtains reduce energy waste, prevent draughts, and improve overall comfort for occupants.
12-13

Technology
12-13

Both air curtains deploy Biddle’s Double Rectifier. This delivers climate separation efficiency of up to 80% using minimal air volume, speed and heating capacity. Two precision rectifier stages work together to produce an exceptionally stable, laminar airstream with outstanding downward penetration.

FORTNUM & MASON
14-15

Fortnum & Mason is one of Britain's most iconic retailers – a London institution since 1707, celebrated for its gourmet grocery and its unwavering commitment to quality. When the store embarked on a new Food and Drink Experience on its third floor, the challenge was clear: integrate a modern heating and cooling solution that could meet tight programme deadlines without compromising the store's historic character.
14-15

The original specification had been written around another manufacturer's product, but lead times made delivery within programme impossible. Biddle was brought in as the solution.
14-15

SOLUTION
14-15

The Comfort Circle Cassette Unit was selected — but this was no standard installation. Rather than being concealed within a suspended ceiling grid, the units were installed exposed to view, in keeping with the floor's industrial aesthetic: appearance was therefore critical. The units, including their discharge grilles, were finished in RAL7042 sateen gloss — a colour chosen specifically to complement Fortnum & Mason's heritage palette — and delivered ready for installation with plug and play functionality. The units feature an integrated week timer for automatic on/off scheduling, 0–10V terminals for BMS connectivity, and seamless integration with Fortnum & Mason's building management system.
14-15

RESULT
14-15

Fortnum & Mason's new Food and Drink Experience opened on programme, fitted with bespoke Comfort Circle Cassette Units, finished to the store's exacting aesthetic standards: on-time delivery, custom finish, seamless BMS integration.
14-15

COMFORT CIRCLE HEATING & VENTILATION
16-17

In retail environments, wall space is too valuable for heating. Biddle's Comfort Circle ceiling cassette fits perfectly within a standard 600×600mm ceiling tile grid, leaving the walls entirely free. The Comfort Circle's circular air discharge grille draws air in through the perforated centre and, once heated, discharges it at a fixed 45° angle towards the floor to deliver even distribution across the room.
16-17

SMART SUSPENSION SYSTEM
16-17

Units can be installed either before or after fitting a suspended ceiling, and the adjustable mounting system allows precise positioning in any direction with minimum effort. This makes the Comfort Circle particularly well-suited to retail fit-outs and refurbishments where installation time and disruption need to be minimised.
16-17

HEATING AND COOLING IN ONE
16-17

The Comfort Circle is available as both a heater and as a unit capable of both heating and cooling, giving retailers complete year-round climate control from a single, discreet ceiling-mounted unit. It is also suitable for use with low water temperature systems, including heat pumps.

NOZ2 HEATING & VENTILATION
18-19

Large-format retail spaces present a unique climate control challenge. In Winter, high ceilings and vast open floor areas, warm air naturally rises and pools, leaving occupants in the cooler air below. In Summer, cooling air needs to passed across the whole shopfloor to create a comfortable shopping experience. The NOZ2 was specifically developed to address this.
18-19

HIGH-LEVEL HEATING
18-19

The NOZ2 multi-directional air heater features six individually adjustable nozzles, each of which can be positioned to direct air precisely where it is needed. This allows a single unit to heat a large floor area evenly, eliminating cold spots and ensuring consistent comfort at customer level.
18-19

DESTRATIFICATION
18-19

The NOZ2 uses its fans to provide active destratification. In winter, it draws warm air that has risen to ceiling level back down to the shopfloor. In summer, it creates ambient air circulation and ventilation. Additionally, automatic controls maintain set temperatures continuously without user intervention.
18-19

BENEFITS
18-19

Uniform air distribution across the shopfloor
18-19

Low energy EC fan motors
18-19

Discreet installation option – 600mm x 600mm

Air2Air HEATING & VENTILATION
20-21

While insulation reduces heating costs, it also traps stale air, moisture and CO₂. Biddle's Air2Air Heat Recovery System maintains fresh, filtered air quality while minimising the energy penalty of ventilation. Using counterflow heat recovery technology, stale outgoing air is transferred to cool incoming fresh air – recovering up to 95% of the heat that would otherwise be lost.
20-21

HUMIDITY MANAGEMENT
20-21

From busy trading times to heatwaves, in-store humidity builds year-round. Continuous air exchange through the Air2Air system actively displaces humid indoor air with fresh, filtered air from the atmosphere. In summer, the built-in bypass mode brings in cooler outside air directly, aiding both temperature and humidity control during warmer periods.
20-21

AIR QUALITY & CO2
20-21

The Air2Air system supports compliance with Approved Document F (Volume 2), which now requires CO₂ monitoring in new non-domestic builds. CO₂ control mode adjusts ventilation rates based on occupancy, meaning air quality remains high during peak trading.
20-21

BENEFITS
20-21

Recovers up to 95% of heat
20-21

Summer bypass for free cooling in warm weather
20-21
