Overpackaging (Cont’d from Page 1) e-commerce has brought further attention to another area in which the supply chain has been struggling: Overpackaging. DS Smith research found that on aver- age,as an example, empty space ranged from 18 percent for clothing and footwear to 64 percent for glassware. New research reveals that consumers are carefully considering company sustainability practices before purchasing, especially when it comes to wasted space or overpackaging. Nearly all consumers (93 percent) reported they have received packages with wasted space, and nearly three-fourths (73 percent) have received packages that were twice the size or more needed. More than half (54 percent) of consumers re- ported that they would think twice before ordering again from a company that had excessive space in their packaging. Promoting The Circular Economy DS Smith developed the Circular Design Principles in collaboration with the non-profit Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a global organization that promotes a cir- cular economy to reduce consumption, waste and pol- lution by keeping products in use.The new program will reportedly help guide companies in designing re- use and recyclability into packaging.DS Smith recently marked its first successful year of collaboration with the Foundation, and in its second year will be working on a series of activities to further its circular econo- my agenda including innovation and circular design projects, training and development of its teams and engagement in its communities. The elimination of empty space in packaging, accord- ing to a survey of executives by Forbes Insights and DS Smith, can produce considerable benefits for business- es that ship goods, from scoring significant savings to gaining an advantage over its competition — all while reducing its environmental impact. About 60 percent of those surveyed estimate more than a quarter of their e-commerce packaging is emp- ty space, from misshapen delivery boxes to partially filled international shipping containers. “Sustainability is at the core of every business deci- sion we make, and the issue of wasted space has been a pain point for many years and a key reason we de- veloped our Circular Design Principles,” said Mark Ushpol, Managing Director of Packaging at DS Smith. “We see design as one of the essential elements of the circular economy and look at packaging through the lens of imagining not only the impact of design on the end user, but also the impact that design has across all stakeholders, from creation of the product to its final destination,”Ushpol said.

Sun Chemical Organizes Sustainability Committee
Sun Chemical has organized a Corporate Sustainability Committee to further strengthen its approach to address- ing the sustainability needs of the packaging industry. The development of sustainable packaging solutions at Sun Chemical has accelerated in the past ten years as awareness of environmental issues has dramatically increased, as has the demand for cutting and recycling household waste and reducing carbon emissions and other pollutants.Consequently, Sun Chemical has orga- nized a Corporate Sustainability Committee to further strengthen its approach to addressing the sustainabili- ty needs of the packaging industry. Comprised of eight executive leaders, including My- ron Petruch, Carlo Musso, Chris Parrilli, Fernando Tav- ara, Robert Fitzka, Greg Hayes, Russell Schwartz, and Jim Van Horn, the Corporate Sustainability Committee will work together to guarantee company-wide en- gagement in sustainability initiatives and will build and oversee the company’s sustainability strategy, ensuring that proper resources are assigned for timely and ef- fective implementation. Nicolas Bétin will assume the role of Sustainability Business Leader for all of Sun Chemical and Dr. Niko- la Juhasz will become the Technical Director of Sus- tainability. Other stakeholders across all divisions and regions at Sun Chemical will also play a key role in a structured approach that will further advance Sun Chemical’s efforts for more sustainable technologies within the various packaging markets. Driving many of the groups’ activities, are the sus- tainability goals of consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies. Increasingly, CPGs are setting ambitious sustainability targets for their organizations with goals of providing high levels of recyclable or renewable packaging as early as 2025,while reducing their use of plastics in packaging. The five principles espoused by Circular Design Principles are: • Protect brands and products : Designers must en- sure the packaging protects products and all the re- sources invested in them. Damaged products from poor packaging have an economic and environmental impact. • Use no more materials than necessary :Optimizing the use of packaging materials saves resources and re- duces waste. • Design for supply cycle efficiency : Developing an end-to-end approach that considers every step of the way, including storage and warehouse optimization, customers’ factories, packaging lines and the layout of products within boxes for stacking in delivery vehicles. • Keep packaging materials in use :Quality, durability and recyclability are key to keeping packaging prod- ucts and materials in use for as long as possible. This means maximizing the use of the fibers and recogniz- ing the value beyond the primary function. • Find a better way : Challenging ourselves and our customers to develop circular packaging solutions. “Everything is designed - from the clothes we wear, to the food we eat, and the buildings we live in,” said Joe Iles, circular design program lead at Ellen MacArthur

U.S. Plastics Pact Launches
Web Blast
The U.S. Plastics Pact, a collaborative led by The Re- cycling Partnership and World Wildlife Fund (WWF), launched as part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s global Plastics Pact network. The U.S. Plastics Pact is an initiative to unify diverse public-private stakeholders across the plastics value chain to rethink the way plas- tics are designed, used, and reused, to create a path to- ward a circular economy for plastic in the United States. The U.S. Plastics Pact brings together companies, government entities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), researchers, and other stakeholders in a pre-competitive platform for industry-led innovation. The U.S. Plastics Pact will drive collaborative action and deliver a significant system change toward a cir- cular economy for plastic, enabling companies and governments in the United States to collectively meet impactful goals by 2025 that they could not otherwise meet on their own. Igniting Change “Together, through the U.S.Plastics Pact,we will ignite systems change to accelerate progress toward a circular economy,” said Sarah Dearman,VP of Circular Ventures for The Recycling Partnership.“As the lead organization that engages the full supply chain to advance circular- ity in the United States, it’s a natural fit for The Recy- cling Partnership to further collaborative action with other industry leaders to create substantial, long-lasting change for the betterment of our planet. The results from the U.S. Plastics Pact’s efforts to advance packag- ing, improve recycling, and reduce plastic waste will benefit the entire system and all materials.” In line with the Ellen McArthur Foundation’s vision of a circular economy for plastic, which unites more than 850+ organizations, underpinned by common definitions and concrete targets, the U.S. Plastics Pact brings together plastic packaging producers, brands, retailers, recyclers, waste management companies,pol- icymakers, and other stakeholders to work collectively toward scalable solutions tailored to the unique needs and challenges within the U.S landscape, through knowledge sharing and coordinated action. As of today, more than 60 Activators — including for-profit companies, government agencies, and NGOs — have joined the Pact, representing each part of the supply and plastics manufacturing chain. By joining the U.S. Plastics Pact, Activators agree to collectively deliver these four targets: • Define a list of packaging to be designated as prob- lematic or unnecessary by 2021 and take measures to eliminate them by 2025.

Kroger Sets New Sustainable Packaging Goals For 2030 Kroger recently released its annual environmental, social and governance report, and it included in the re- port a new set of sustainable packaging goals for 2030. Over the next decade, for its private-label products, Kroger plans to achieve 100 percent recyclable, com- postable or reusable packaging; increase recycled con- tent in packaging so its overall private-label portfolio includes at least 10 percent; reduce unnecessary pack- aging; and raise customer awareness about how to re- sponsibly handle product packaging. “To start,we will complete a baseline product pack- aging footprint to fully understand current packag- ing impacts,” Kroger wrote in the report.“Improving the recyclability of single-use packaging depends on both product redesigns and recycling infrastructure improvements.” In a supplement to its news release about the report, Kroger noted that the involvement of customers is a key part of the process. The retailer, which has part- nered with the circular packaging platform Loop, plans to pilot in early 2021 “an in-store activation of popular national brand and (private-label) items in re- usable packaging.” In 2019, Kroger’s steps forward in the sustainabili- ty of packaging included reducing plastic resin in packaging; adding recycled content to packaging in produce, dairy and bakery; adding “Please Recycle” to more product packages; and using more paper-based packaging certified to a sustainable forestry standard, among other improvements. The ESG report also highlights Kroger’s contribu- tions to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals including zero hunger, responsible consumption and production, decent work and economic growth, and good health and well being. The report also discusses the company’s diversity and inclusion programs, community engagement and more. • By 2025, all plastic packaging is 100 percent reus- able, recyclable, or compostable. • By 2025, undertake ambitious actions to effectively recycle or compost 50 percent of plastic packaging. • By 2025, the average recycled content or respon- sibly sourced bio-based content in plastic packaging will be 30 percent. Results of measurable change in each of the target areas and transparent reporting are key outcomes of the U.S. Plastics Pact. Progress of the U.S. Pact will be tracked through WWF’s ReSource: Plastic Footprint Tracker, which provides a standard methodology to track companies’ plastic footprints and publicly report on their plastic waste commitments each year. The re- port will be made publicly available each year. Global Crisis “Plastic pollution is a global crisis that needs local solutions, and the United States is one of biggest op- portunities where regional interventions can result in transformative change around the world,” said Erin Si- mon,Head, PlasticWaste and Business atWorldWildlife Fund. “To do this, WWF sees the U.S. Plastics Pact as the linchpin for uniting the critical stakeholders—in- dustry leaders, waste management systems, and policy- makers—under a common vision and action plan for meaningful, measurable impact.” Achieving this vision will require new levels of inno- vation and collaboration from all Activators of the U.S. Plastics Pact and beyond. The U.S. Pact is launched as part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Plastics Pact network, joining Plastics Pacts in Europe, Latin Amer- ica and Africa as a globally-aligned response to plastic waste and pollution that brings together shared ambi- tion, combined expertise, and collaboration to create regional and national solutions toward a circular econ- omy in which plastic never becomes waste. Getting Involved For more information on how to join the U.S. Plas- tics Pact and drive collective action, visit the website usplasticspact.org or contact takeaction@usplas- ticspact.org. To maintain continual and effective collaboration, the U.S. Plastics Pact will seek guidance from a robust Advisory Council, made up of 10 Activator organiza- tions, companies, and governments. Those included in the Advisory Council are: Amcor, Balcones Resources Inc., Austin Resource Recovery (City of Austin, TX), Eureka Recycling, Grove Collaborative, Mars, Incorpo- rated,Target,The Coca-Cola Company, Unilever United States, andWalmart, Inc.
