PCA Announces Third Price Increase In 2026

According to multiple industry sources, Pack- aging Corporation of America is set to in- crease its containerboard prices $140 per ton effective September 1. This would mark PCA’s third containerboard pricing increase in North America in just seven months. This amount is double what producers typ- ically announce for increases, with numerous industry participants and observers calling it unprecedented and shocking. If fully implemented, that means linerboard prices in North America would rise by $240 per ton in only seven months, in what is like- ly the largest, fastest increase ever. The last swift linerboard price increase run was during COVID when prices rose four times in a row by a total of $220 per ton in 2020-2022. According to Packaging Dive , Memphis, Tennessee based International Paper (IP) has also announced an $80 per ton increase on containerboard prices to take effect Septem- ber 1. Analysts believe that similar to PCA’s, IP’s increase is driven by rising costs for inputs in- cluding recycled fiber, freight and electricity. Fastmarkets reported that the tightness

Despite several companies' executives pointing to some containerboard market improvements over 2025, analysts have cautioned that the sector, and packaging overall, is not experiencing a robust recovery. “It's hardly a time to celebrate the sector. While the stocks have risen 5-10 percent since May, demand remains lackluster and volumes weak,” said George Staphos, Bank of America Securities analyst, in a July 14 memo about the overall paper and packaging sector. “Containerboard is okay, but that's because of pricing strength rather than demand.”

Koenig & Bauer Launches New Flatbed Die Cutter For Corrugated With the CutPRO 2.1, Koenig & Bauer presents a new flat- bed die-cutter for corrugated board processing. Devel- oped in joint cooperation within the Group, the machine is specifically designed for production stability and high reliability in practical operation. “Our customers are under intense pressure to protect their margins while managing the shortage of skilled work- ers. With the CutPRO 2.1, we deliver more than just theo- retical peak output – we provide a machine that secures true profitability in three-shift operations thanks to its pro- cess stability,” outlines Hannah Potrawa, Director Corru- gated at Koenig & Bauer. “This is our understanding of a true partnership solution.” The CutPRO 2.1 processes sheet sizes up to a maxi- mum of 1,300 x 2,100 mm at speeds of up to 7,000 sheets per hour. The range of compatible substrates extends from solid board to corrugated board. To reduce unproductive downtime during make-ready and maintenance procedures, the machine features an au- tomatic chain tensioner, improved waste routing within the die-cutter, and a safety mechanism for manually moving the die-cutting unit. In addition, the CutPRO 2.1 offers tool compatibility with existing die-cutting tools, and can be seamlessly integrat-

ed into new workflows, which reduces changeover costs With the industry-wide shortage of skilled workers, the human-machine interface (HMI) has been completely re- designed. The logical structure of the user interface makes onboarding easier for new employees and shortens the training period. Manual procedures have also been simpli- fied; for instance, a special system allows a single operator to lift the upper frame safely.

For real-time data analysis, the CutPRO 2.1 is integrated into the myKyana software ecosystem and uses AI-sup- ported functions to provide and analyse production data, thereby proactively minimising operating errors. The machine was developed in close coordination with customers from the field. Koenig & Bauer will deliver and install the first alpha machine at a pilot customer's site be- fore the end of this year. Immediately afterwards, an in- tensive testing phase of the prototype will begin in a real, live production environment to finally validate the practical suitability and cost-effectiveness of the flatbed die-cutter.

AF&PA Releases June 2026 Packaging Papers Monthly Report The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has re- leased the June 2026 Packaging Papers Monthly report. Total packaging papers & specialty packaging ship- ments in June increased two percent compared to June 2025. Domtar Employees Join Industry Advocacy at Annual PPRC Event Fort Mill, South Carolina based Domtar shared in an arti- cle on its website, that several of its employees recently participated in the annual Pulp & Paperworkers’ Resource Council (PPRC) Fly-In in Washington, D.C., to engage mem- bers of Congress and their staff on legislative and regula- tory issues affecting the pulp and paper industry. The week-long event, held in June, provides an oppor- tunity for employees to share perspectives on how U.S. federal policies affect manufacturing operations, forestry, rural communities and jobs. Through a series of meetings on Capitol Hill, this year’s participants highlighted the in- dustry’s commitment to environmental stewardship, eco- nomic growth and maintaining the global competitiveness of manufacturing. “The PPRC Fly-In is an important reminder our employ- ees are among the industry’s best advocates,” says Steve Henry, president, Domtar’s president in the U.S. and CEO of its paper and packaging business unit. “They bring re- al-world experience and credibility to conversations with policymakers.” Among the topics discussed was international trade, including support for renewal of the United States-Mex- ico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), preserving access to specialized manufacturing equipment, simplifying the Eu-

ropean Deforestation Regulation and ensuring non-market economies are held accountable for their trade practices. Participants also emphasized the importance of responsi- ble forest management and support for legislation such as the Fix Our Forests Act (H.R. 471). Domtar discussed concerns with expanding renewable fuel incentives in ways that could increase competition for wood fibre, raising costs for manufacturers and threaten- ing production and jobs. Environmental policy was another major focus this year. Attendees highlighted the industry’s significant progress in enhancing air quality, noting decades of investments in cleaner technologies and operational improvements. They encouraged policymakers to consider environmental, so- cial and economic impacts when developing future regu- lations to ensure mills remain competitive while continuing to deliver environmental gains. They also discussed the industry’s strong recycling record. Several meetings centered on the industry’s role as a leading producer of carbon-neutral bioenergy. Employees highlighted how paper and wood mills maximize use of re- newable resources by converting manufacturing residuals into energy, helping reduce reliance on fossil fuels while supporting local economies. Packaging’s Strategic Role Within The Warehouse Environment BY WES JONES Understanding the unique dynamics of the retail merchan- dising supply chain is essential in the corrugated and fold- ing carton industries. In my own work, I see this firsthand when partnering with industry leader Costco, where our approach centers on a singular, fundamental objective: driving member value. Succeeding in this environment means recognizing that the retailer is the final entity communicating with the shopper and that packaging must be done right: placed correctly, structurally sound and including the right mes- sage so both emerging and established brands can tell their story and build trust with the member base. The member is always the most important part of the equation. Helping Costo Execute Their “Treasure Hunt” Strategy Costco’s overarching strategy is simple: deliver the best products at the greatest value. This approach helps keep the shopping environment exciting, creating a “treasure hunt” atmosphere that brings members back to discover unique items. Packaging plays a key role in this specific retail setting as it is used to communicate directly with the member. Whether the primary packaging in a bag or box or the secondary packaging in a tray, it communicates the brand’s value directly on the warehouse floor. It displays the product’s size, key attributes and points of differentia- tion, which allows members to quickly assess the product while shopping. Communicating Efficiency As A Point Of Value Communicating value on the floor is only half of the re- quirement; packaging is also a critical point in the supply chain where hidden costs live. Packaging must be engi- neered to efficiently survive a unique supply chain so that a brand can grow and thrive financially. When designing for this environment, the 40”x48” pallet is the white space; a canvas for design. Every packaging structure must fall within the retailer’s compliance parameters, ensuring: • Optimal Pallet Fit: Maximizing space from the brand’s manufacturing or packaging facility to the pallet, so no space is wasted. • Supply Chain Durability: Structurally surviving the jour- ney through the depot system to prevent damages that result in uncaptured front-end costs. Designing for Established vs. Emerging Brands While the physical supply chain and structural compli- ance parameters remain identical, the specific packaging design strategy shifts whether the brand in question is es- tablished or emerging. For products that consistently meet sales thresholds, the goal is operational efficiency with a design focus to build the most efficient pallet configura- tion possible to move large volume through the system without slowing it down.
