King's Business - 1952-05

stealing, adultery, murder, etc. This fact is suggested in the latter part of the commandment. For instance, among other things, one is not to covet another man’s wife. Such covetousness leads to adultery, an infringement of- one of the former commandments. In Colossians 3:5 covetousness is classed with fornica tion, uncleanness, inordinate affection, and evil concupiscence, and is called idolatry. It displaces God and the things for which He stands by the things of the flesh. Think of what covetousness did to Adam and Eve, to Lot, and to Achan, and remember that it can work the same havoc in our lives. The Havoc of Greed Luke 12:13-21 Our Lord spoke the parable of this passage for the express purpose of showing the evils of covetousness. A certain man sought the Master to deal with his brother in the matter of divid ing an inheritance (v. 13). Our Lord saw the cancer of covetousness in this man’s heart and told him to “beware of covetousness” (v. 15) and proceeded to impart to His audience the parable of the rich fool (w . 16-21). The story of the parable needs no repetition. We see in it the case of a covetous, grasping individual who in his covetousness lost his soul. In his seeking after material gain, he forgot God. He is altogether thoughtful of himself. Note again the personal pronouns that occur as he relates his experience. Moreover, the rich man forgot the needs of his fellowmen. It never occurred to him that he might have put his possessions to some use to alleviate the needs of those in need. All he thought of was barns and more barns filled with earth’s bounty. That isn’t all. He forgot the needs of his own soul. He projected himself into the future and imagined that with full barns he would be com pletely satisfied. He did not consider the fact that man’s soul cannot be sat isfied with material things (cf. John 4:34). Saddest of all, this covetous man for got the fact of death. This was the consummation of his folly. He lived as though he expected to stay in this world forever. Sensible men and women recog nize that this life is but a time of preparation for a world beyond. The Remedy for Greed Luke 12:29-34 “ Seek ye the kingdom of God” (v. 31). They who get their eyes fixed on Heaven and the things of God will es cape the snare of covetousness and greed. They who become interested in laying up treasures in Heaven, will not find themselves too much concerned with the things of earth. A good parallel to the exhortation found here is that found in Colossians 3:1-4: “ If ye then be risen
