RAPA presents a monster of a play

about three months in advance of the pro- ductions. General notices for these auditions are published in local newspapers. RAPA encourages newcomers both as actors and backstage crew. Once actors are selected and produc- tion staff is on board, rehearsals begin and the various aspects of production are set in motion. This all takes a lot of time and hard work on the part of many volunteers, many of whom never wish to tread the boards themselves, but prefer to remain anonymous in the background. Regardless of preference, actors and backstage crew are all equally needed and valued.

Dave Rama, playing the Monster, stares at his creator, as Anemone Fritzen, Kevin Kennedy and Janice Jeness look on.

The Russell Association for Performing Arts (RAPA) presented quite the musical, fromNovember 25 to the 27, at the Russell high school. Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein, di- rected by Gord Hawkes and produced by Joyce Chartrand, had a cast of 24 actors and countless more crewmembers. “It’s a pretty funny show,” stated RAPA member John Tobias. Grandson of the infamous Victor Fran- kenstein, Frederick Frankenstein inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania. With the help of a hunchbacked side-kick, Igor, and a leggy lab assistant, Inga, Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. «It’s alive!» he exclaims as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather’s. Even- tually, of course, the monster escapes and hilarity continuously abounds. “Young Frankenstein was first a movie, written and directed byMel Brooks,” explai- ned Hawkes. “The stage version was also written by Brooks, known for his intellectual humour.” But acting wasn’t the only art medium utilized by RAPA over the presentation. A live orchestra was also present, delivering masterpieces of music. “This is my second musical with RAPA,” said conductor Lisa Bebyck. “I was super excited to hear that we were going to do Young Frankenstein, but I was also anxious, because it’s a challenging show to put on. I’ve had fun every step of the way, and even if my conducting armmight be a bit sore after every night, the smiles and laughs I get out of it are totally worth it.” RAPA is an amateur community theatre organization and is administered by an elected board whichmeets monthly. It was founded in late 1989 and has an interes- ting history, staging over three dozen plays during this time. In the beginning years, RAPA mounted up to five productions per year including plays involving youth only, series of one-act plays, and full length dra- mas. In the last few years, two major plays have been produced per year, usually in April and November or December. Plays are selected by the board after rea- dings of various plays suggested by RAPA members. Play auditions are held usually
