ORAPA, LETLHAKANE AND DAMTSHAA MINES (OLDM) KICKSTARTS THE BREAKTHROUGH TO LITERACY PROGRAMME

Orapa, Letlhakane & Damtshaa Mines (OLDM) has partnered with Stepping Stones International (SSI) to implement the Breakthrough to Literacy Programme which aims to advance teachers competency to teach grammar, and comprehension with an aim of improving literacy levels targeting accuracy, fluency and reading comprehension for students in standards one to seven. The Programme will be implemented in three schools being; Supang Primary School in Letlhakane, Khwee Primary School and Mopipi Primary School. To kickstart the Programme SSI, recently conducted a literacy assessors’ training session at Letlhakane Main Kgotla ahead of the pre-assessment of students. The training brought together seven assessors, who were capacitated through a structured and practical literacy training programme. The sessions focused on strengthening assessors’ skills in identifying reading levels, administering literacy assessments, and supporting evidence-based interventions for young learners. The next stage of implementation will focus on training teachers and school heads, which will include provision of the literacy curriculum course to teachers, school

management and regional officers in the literacy methodology over a 5-day period. During implementation, quality control will be conducted by observing each teacher implementing classroom sessions 6 times over the year. Teachers are expected to do the literacy sessions a minimum of three times per week. Literacy post-assessments for students will be conducted at the end of the Programme to gauge improvement and impact and teachers who fully implemented the programme and passed the observation will be awarded a Literacy Intervention Certificate.
