the wrong influence of adults. The proph et further tells of other far reaching judgments which are to come upon Jero boam and upon Israel (w . 14-16). The saddest part about Jeroboam’s sin was the effect it had upon others, even upon a whole nation. These are awful words about Jeroboam—“ who did sin, and who made Israel to sin” (v. 16). Mark it well, no man sins unto himself. Only eternity will reveal the influence of one sin. Helps For the Children Bad News For the King 1 Kings 14:1-18 Memory Verse: "Seek the Lord and his strength: seek his foce evermore" (Psa. 105:4). The son of King Jeroboam was ill, so ill that his royal parents feared that he might not live. The king asked his wife to disguise herself so that no one would recognize her and go to Ahijah, the prophet, to ask what would happen to their child. The blind prophet was told by the Lord that the queen was coming to see him. The Lord also told the old man some unpleasant news for the king. Because; Jeroboam had been unwise and wicked in ruling the kingdom which God had given to him, God was going to punish him by taking away his kingdom and causing those who lived in his land to die. When the feet of the queen would enter the city again her child would die. The words of the prophet took place just as God had promised. Ahijah might have been afraid that the king would take his life for bringing such unpleasant news to him, but he was the messenger of God; and he faithfully and fearlessly did that which God told him to do. God’s Word tells us to “ Seek the Lord and his strength: seek his face evermore.” Sin and wrongdoing always have unpleas ant results. God tells us that “ all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). How our hearts should rejoice because the Lord Jesus Christ, God’s Son died upon the cross to pay the penalty for our sin! Those who know Him are seeking His face and His strength for evermore. May 9, 1954 Elijah Challenges Baal Worship 1 Kings 17:1; 18:17-24, 37-39 Pointers on the Lesson The lesson this week gathers around the ministry of Elijah, the second in the list of prophets to be studied this quarter, even as Ahijah was the first. In each period of the history of the Northern Kingdom God had a prophet to declare His will. He never left the nation with out a witness. The light sometimes flick ered, but it never went out. Such was APRIL 1954

the situation as our lesson opens today. Baalism was on the ascendancy and the worship of the true God was almost in eclipse. But God had a prophet. The Appearance of Elijah 1 Kings 17:1 The appearance of Elijah is both sud den and dramatic. He came like a bolt from the blue. He is introduced as abrupt ly as was Melchisedec in an earlier day. No mention is made of his birth, parents, nor call to the prophetic office. He is called simply “ the Tishbite” , probably from Tisbeh, a place east of the Jordan. Obscure though his background was, yet he was God’s man for a critical hour. His coming added great dignity to the prophetic office. There had been prophets before, but Elijah elevated the office to one of supreme national importance. At the time of Israel’s most wicked king, Ahab, appears God’s greatest prophet. The phrase, before whom I stand, suggests that he was truly God’s man for a dark hour. The Attitude of Ahab 1 Kings 18:17, 18 “ Art thou he that troubleth Israel?” Ahab recognized that the present famine had not come through natural causes but rather through the word of this strange prophet. The question was one of anger and resentment. It is characteristic of sin that it blinds the eyes of the sinner to his own sin and seeks to place responsi bility elsewhere. Elijah was not the troubler of Israel, but Ahab and all those guilty of idolatry were the real agitators. The Challenge of Elijah 1 Kings 18:19-24 The challenge is clearly stated. It was reasonable and in every sense fitting in view of the trend of affairs. The people^ recognized this when in response to the prophet’s words in verse 21 they had not a word to say. Even as in that far off day, men must choose today between two masters,N two deaths, two resurrections, two judgments, two eternal destinies, etc. Why go limping along trying to avoid the issue when sooner or later it must be met by every individual? The Prayer of Elijah 1 Kings 18:37-39 It should be carefully noted that Eli jah’s prayer was not for any public dis play mainly, but for the glory of God and the restoration of His people. Pray ing like this is sure to receive God’s ap proval and things are bound to happen for God’s glory. Helps For the Children One Against Four Hundred and Fifty 1 Kings 18:17-39 Memory Verse: "How long halt ye be tween two opinions: if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him" (1 Ki. 18:21).
